I didn't expect much however. you can't use less than zero which is what I try and do between 3:30 and 6:30 each day
It’s a bit biased against those that don’t use much electricity in the first place. I have quite a high base usage which I trimmed by flicking a few switches and letting my server run off its UPS for an hour. Add in no TV and I saved 64% compared to my norm.

Right now obviously they are still trying to prove that customer demand can be influenced heavily by price.
My calcs showed the first part of my postcode area was down 35%, I was listed as 37%
If over a winter of these sessions its clear its working then I suspect the approach may be to force every supplier to offer time of use based tariffs.
These can be complicated like Octopus go, or maybe simpler like say a cheap, normal and peak rate scheme. With 11pm -6am being cheap, 6-9 am being peak along with 4-8pm, with the rest normal.
Standard unit cost is say 34p with cheap being -50% and peak being +50% I am sure that would trigger people able to load shift to do it far more consistently.
Then if you want to go full geek you go onto a go type tariff with constantly switching rates.
Those that wont move can have fixed pricing but it should be at a premium over normal. Say 25% to 40%.

Bit tough on anyone with an electric hob/oven, which is over half our daily electricity usage.
Still waiting for my saving sessions result to be calculated but I knocked off work early and cooked before 5pm. Still watched TV while eating 5-6pm but will be interesting to see the drop-off.
the baselining calculation from uk power docs is more complex than octopus suggested. of just last 10 appropriate days, same slots.
I read below as, if you just shift your usage on that day to 6 earlier periods, so those increase versus previous days, that counts against you,
(if they have to fire up the gas power generation for slightly displaced usage that doesn't prevent 'overload' of system)

I take it to be the opposite
(Metered for the day - average for the previous days), this is ADDED to your baseline for calculating your savings so if your running high that day your going to have your adjusted baseline increased.
They mention on the NG document I added a few days ago to reflect for colder days when you would expect increased usage so if your running high that day its assumed that would continue, at least thats my take on it

the way I see it it's not about what is tough or fair. I mean imo it isn't really "fair" that those who already do their very best without an incentive to minimise energy use who get nothing but someone with a hot tub who just hits pause for an HR or so makes bank.
it is purely about lowering peak demand to try to minimise "dirty" energy generation and at it's very worst possibility prevent rolling blackouts.
the fact that it's rewarding mostly heavy users and not people already using little power, or the fact that those who cook or heat with electricity may get shafted isnt really relevant.
imo it's simple. the only sensible option long term is use energy at peak times pay more, use it off peak pay less. fair does not come in to it.
(note please don't read that as me being aggressive to you, I just proofread and it does sound a bit like that . it's not intentional , it's just how I see it. it should get a lot easier to do this when we all have electric cars and can do Vehicle to Home

Yes, and can be on multiple times a day I assume. You telling me having 2-3 lights on at night uses up more electricity than that?

Let's say a light is 10w (think most of ours are about 10w)
10W*3lights*8hours = 240W
Lets say kettle is 2500w (ours is)
2500w*5uses*(1/60)hours = 208W
So well within the ball park.
Less time or lower wattage bulbs could take it under.
Fewer uses of kettle would pull that down.
But fairly equivalent.

8 hours? I don’t think any one light bulb is on more than a few hours a day in my house. They only need to be on in the room you are in when it is dark outside. Certainly if someone wants to save they won’t have it on 8 hours anyways
10W bulb? Aren’t they between 5-7w these days? All mine are max 7w.
Also aren’t most kettles 3000W? Assuming 1 minute per cup of tea and 3-4 people in the house, that would be more than 5 too

That's what I mean. Different use cases.
Someone might boil the kettle once.
Someone might have lower powered lights.
But its all fairly close.
Fair enough, though I would done it like this:
7W*3lights*5hours = 105W
3000w*8 cups of tea*(1/60)mins = 400W
Not so close now
