Energy Prices (Strictly NO referrals!)

Using 2/3 less paying more.
But prices have gone up, it sucks but little more we can do.

It's staggering when I look at the comparison charts

The problem is that DDs are going up a disproportionate amount for a lot of people. The energy companies are obviously factoring in current and future price increases, but they aren’t factoring in peoples reduced use or in many cases allowing them to change their DD easily. No other sector would get away with it. I’m fortunate that I can pay whatever, but I worry about those already struggling and actively taking measures to reduce their use, only to be slapped in the face with a hugely increased bill.

I mean on our new house British Gas ‘estimated’ our use at 4 times that of our main property and demanded payment in 5 days. ******* idiots. All sorted now at least after multiple cut off phone calls directing you to a website that directs you to the phone.

Prices have tripled what did people expert, seriously?

Exactly - in October we used half the gas we used in Oct 2021, but paid twice as much for it.

These prices include the standing charge and VAT

My gas bill for November was £150. A year ago the same consumption would have been around £60.

In those terms it really is a ridiculously unfair situation and unavoidable cost increases. We should never have been exposed to this risk, pure mismanagement of our energy resilience.

Well I've got 12p worth of Octo points for sig ing up last two times and might as well keep trying as Octopus are giving away more points to just being a part of it.

I don't think I will ever actually save compared to previous time frames but that's fine.

My gas bill including standing charge is about £120 for this month, thats with a usage profile of heating our 4 bed detached 24/7 to 18c in every room (we started heating just around the end of Oct). My electric including standing charge is a little higher at £130 this month but i've got two servers on 24/7 sucking me dry on that one :D. Feel like i could do better on the heating front as we have no curtains on any windows in the house and i can feel the draft off them (livingroom alone has about 7.5sqm of windows!!).

I probably wouldn't participate in these sessions even if i could under BG. Our usage while we are awake is basically flat lined at around 0.5kWh every hour as long as we don't use the washing machine. It's not worth my time turning off all the lights, not using the computer, having to turn off my servers, unplugging every other device, making sure the fridge doesn't run, turning the boiler off, and sitting in darkness doing bugger all for an hour for a maximum of a 0.5kWh. The sessions imo are not aimed at this usage and really just there to encourge people to not run ovens at this time, charging cars when they get home, turning on driers/washing machines etc, running electric based heating when they get home etc.

I got BG to switch me to variable DD and they so far havn't issued a bill for 6 weeks, we'll see how long that'll go on for but thats on them (i don't mind them forcing me to be in debit :D through their lack of billing!)

Octopus saving session tomorrow! go sign up go go go

Unless you're a big energy user during the period the savings go nowhere near justifying going out of your way. It's good for the grid, but the benefits need to be much higher. Because we use so little the only reduction we can really make is sitting in the dark or just going out.

I was part of the beta trial earlier in the year and I think the most I've been credited is like 15p.

Yes agree but I think the main point is to try to get people to load shift the big stuff out of the window
Cooker, dishwasher etc

If you never use those items in the peak period your already in effect load shifting away from the main period
I saved about .8kwh over 2 sessions so far. Not really done anything different apart from specifically not cooking during the windows.
As I now have solar and batteries my usage on the 5:30-6:30 window has been since last friday zero, apart from today when batteries didnt make it to late evening as normal.

Really my motivation is to show it works, that way there is likely to be more regulator pressure for more time of use tariffs and hopefully better payments to people who can release to the grid as well during these times.

I don't even want to think about next winter when the help is removed.:(

Not sure whats going on there, I have wooden framed single glazed with draft issues, and I havent been below low 14s at absolute worst (no heating), currently 16C in this room. It hit 18C two days ago.
So to note I was out last night all night after WFH I came back this morning at 7.30am to a house that was still 11c downstairs and 13c upstairs. Temp outside all day yesterday was 5c and at night dropped to about 3c. I am going to put the heating on for an hour this morning, 7.30am to 8.30am to see what temp the house rises too and then how long it takes to drop back down to what appears to be a base temp of around 11c.

That’s a recipe to get mould. Either keep the house cold or keep it warm, but don’t heat it for short periods as mould will thrive in those conditions.
