Amateur DIY Resin Pour Coffee Table

Cannot tell from here on 2 & 3 but 1 Looks to be a large slab perhaps ready to split more in future?

Butterfly Inlays might help.

Yes. The entire left edge could fall off. I think you would do better boring a few holes from the left edge in to a good depth and popping in some very long screws topped off with some wooden plugs.

I assume for this you really, really want to get the moisture content of the wood as low as possible, within reason, or at least low and consistent. Then keep it there whilst you get the resin poured to keep it air tight and hence stable, if its wetter in one area than another thats going to move over time.
Very low humidity is going to avoid heat etc trying to move the humidity thats trapped around.

The first one is a good example for me. Its clearly got rot thats giving character. Rot needs moisture and air to carry on reacting, take them away and its very quickly going to stop, rot in place or not.

From what I can see all these resin tables are fully sealed which to me is the minimum unless your going to be able to keep the humidity quite close to when you pour it. Wood absorbs a lot of moisture given the opportunity and can "grow" quite considerably.
Any exposed wood will IMO likely lead to a failure point. I don't believe that crack would if its also filled with resin since again it should be stable once its kept at constant humidity.

Really interested to see progress on this; I've wanted to have a go for ages but I'm always wondering if it's one of those things that looks easy on video but is actually a ballache.

Good luck!

Blacktail studios on YouTube.
it's a guy who does did like this for a living but shows you how he does it from start to finish.

If it helps.

Oak wont crack that easily is my guess. Put the butterflys in anyway because they look great unless somehow the gap is adding to it. That last pic of the finished table is maybe the best example I've seen, I'd also be afraid to scratch/dent it

Ha I follow Blacktail too.

I have a wire brush extension for my angle grinder, but waiting on my ryobi battery one to arrive to make it easier to get those last bits on the edges all cleaned out. Then I'll paint and seal those in resin, which a lot of people seem to recommend doing prior to the pour.

I like to yolo in, but I am starting on some of the cracks to see in general. I will also go back and watch a couple of those videos I've watched a few times just to make sure I'm doing it totally as it should be. I'm using the offcuts for a couple of other things, so I'm sure it'll be ok... maybe

I used to fiberglass for cars and making molds and that **** was the same (I suppose it's all resin?) it's pretty awful. I have a couple of big ass fans I use for Zwift, so think I'll position those towards my garage door and hope it blows some of the smell out because it does proper stink.

Was going to recommend having a look at blacktail studios, as he does a lot of these but for massive tables that costs tens of thousands.

Mate I would LOVE a workshop that was half wood working tools like that, CNC, lathe, the lot and the other side 4 post lift and all car stuff. I'd spend every waking hour in there!!

I just noticed your location, but just before covid I nearly joined a Maker's Club in Newcastle, they had all sorts of stuff from woodworking to plasma cutters, you paid a small monthly fee to have access to all the equipment at certain times when 'the club' was open.

I was talking to a mate about one of these just over the border in Basel apparently. We're going to pop along and have a look one weekend, see what it's like. Would be great.

Yea, I love watching blacktail, he was one of the first I watched to be fair!

I think it's the fact that they've been inside mine and the humidity is very low in the house, so drying out and it's caused this. I have been using chisels to open up the cracks slightly so I can pour resin into them before doing the full mold and pour. I just did the first pour and I will definitely need to do 2 on the big one as it's finding it's way all the way through and looks half empty now. Which is fine, because when it dries I should have a base to fill it on top of.

These ones were nice and simple

This one kept dropping, so letting the resin go off before I give it a top up. I'll come back tomorrow and do a second on it. Further down the board on the same crack it is fine, so just on this bigger section.

Of course I am doing this in my living room area
Will update tomorrow.

Annoyingly I have my old man over this weekend, or I'd crack on with the mold and first pour, and had a mate over this weekend, so will no doubt have to wait until next week for the mold and pour but at least I can sort this bit out first.

It'll be getting a plane down after this anyway to make sure it's all super flat, but of course, needs this all filled first.

Second pour was a good shout. The first pour wasn't solid but it was hard enough to take the second and it's not running through. That should be enough to plane over the top afterwards.

I also resined the live inside edges as a lot of people say this is the best thing to do pre main pour.

When it's 100% dry (prob next week when I can) I'll plane this slab flat and the other side to match depth, then it's ready for the mold making... I think!

Mate, it's hard enough to get the kids to do their washing, let alone get a pair of socks for them to take after. They're all dry and sans a partner and some guff bag to actually take them (namely my 15 and 17yr olds)

Hah. But do they ever dry in a pile?! I don't necessarily pair ours (I do really), but they're always hung up

Thank goodness we've got that sock issue out of the way and I now know I will sleep tonight.
Lest I not post the actual odd sock basket I have as well. Crikey! :D

Hahaha well, it's not my pic so I cannot possibly claim credit for the vaseline lens job!
