What silly misconceptions about cars did you have as a child?

I use to want to be a bin man too. I found the lorries fascinating the way they emptied the bins and did that scoop thing to compress all the rubbish.

Ghia meant automatic.

The first time I saw a manual 3L Granda Ghia was an epiphany, not least as my Dad was driving us on holiday in it!!

Think 1970's, 2 tone, blue over silver, 3L with 5 on the floor.

To this young lad it was THE BEST CAR IN THE WORLD

It als had radio AND tape player

I remembered another one, I'm not sure how it came about but I was absolutely convinced that a Q plate meant military vehicle, not Kit Car.

Quite how effective open chassis single seaters with less plating than an engagement ring would be at launching a military assault, I'm not sure.

When I was a kid used to be a lot of ex-military and possibly some military vehicles on Q plates (or more rarely QQ - though I think that was mostly used by US army when attached to NATO in Europe using German format plates from a Google). Some of the military personnel from the airbase near where I lived used to drive on Q plates on their civilian cars for some reason - no idea why.

There was 2 people around where I lived who had ex-military 6x6 armoured vehicles which as a kid I was a bit in awe of (there was one parked up at a fuel station by the A303 for years if anyone remembers that).

I thought Rovers were the best cars ever.

I wouldn't go that far - but my estimation of Rover changed a lot around 2000 or so - when I was a kid where my dad worked used Rover 800s for shuffling higher ups around with leather and "wood" interiors and I used to think they were a much higher marque than they really are/were LOL. The 220 coupe turbo/Tomcat for the time was also quite a car.

Erm...Q plate doesn't mean kit car.

I just thought of one. I used to think that you had to learn how much to turn the steering wheel for a given corner on a given road.

Judging by the number around: that Brown was an acceptable colour for a car. As opposed to the real reason being that the rust would be showing through within a month of your August 1st brand new registration plate and it wasn't so obvious from 10 feet away on a brown car.
