What film did you watch last night?

Everything Everywhere All At Once

Basically the filmic equivalent of LSD. Cannot be rated on a mere numeric scale so I rate it:

Terrapin out of Aubergine. Gonna be a cult movie.

I watched it with 2 mates, I loved it, one thought it was OK, the other fell asleep

So just like LSD, can be a personally great experience but not one you'd recommend to others :p

Empire of Light - 7/10

Lovely story, although I thought it would be more about the cinema itself. Perfect performances, looked wonderful too -although I’m biased because it was my friends first credit as a finishing colourist. Kudos to him. (And maybe Roger Deakins a bit too ;) )

I also watched it yesterday. The first time I tried I switched it off after about half an hour because the characters were so annoying. It got a bit better but I still wouldn't call it good. Therefore, it will likely win a ton of Oscars.

The Whale
I'm not going to give it a score because I'm not sure! Thought it was a good character study and had some moving parts. Many of the characters are outright unlikeable.

No idea why people like this movie. We switched it off after half an hour. Way too frantic and annoying characters. I doubt I'll ever give it another go.

2001 a space odyssey

6/10

Had never seen it before and didn't know too much about it before watching it other than Hal. Really amazing special effects for that era, but the story was slow and didn't really go anywhere

Probably a controversial opinion, but I guess it's just not for me

Top Gun: Maverick

Fantastic action sequences and Tom Cruise is always good/convincing. Decent supporting cast with the likes of Jon Hamm.

Bit up its own **** though and far too insipidly nostalgic.

7/10

65 (2023) - 3 / 10

Overall, severely lacking and instantly forgettable.

The plot is bland and formulaic, the characters are dull and there isn’t enough of a narrative to keep you interested.

Focusing on the action rather than isolation or character growth could have worked, but the snappy editing makes for a disjointed and unoriginal journey.

The dinosaurs are menacing and look great and there’s a few jumpy moments due to the sounds and special effects, but it’s nothing special.

Cocaine Bear - 6/10
Was looking forward to this and it has some really good bits in it (the "Just Can't Get Enough" Ambulance scene the highlight), but kinda goes a bit flat towards the end. Most of the characters are quite stereotypical and one dimensional.

star wars : rise of skywalker

forced to watch this film with younger people in my familiy

Score: 2/10

I watched it and though to myself 'how could disney murder such a great franchise with this woke influenced bull...... crap '
long and windey, and script was obviously written by someone who hates star wars

would rather have scurvy of the eyes than watch this trash again

Gave it my best shot, but not for me. Made my head hurt as 90% of it has the Hysteria knob at 11.
4/10 .... might have given it 5/10 if the entire universe wasn't stupidly captured on a bagel. Actually 3/10. Chod.

Stopped watching EEAAO after 30 mins, did not engage at all. Someone upthread was spot on, every character was just so annoying.

So we ended up watching "The Guard", with Gleeson. Never saw it before, very entertaining :)
