MX5 (MK3) or S2000 worth the jump?

The T-Jet was race proven in the Abarth 500 which is probably why they stuck with it where they could. It's pretty durable.

Unlikely to make it back but suspension does make a huge difference on them. Saying that, a decent wheel alignment (i ended up down at Wheels Inmotion) massively helps too compared to the out-of-the-box geometry.
There's no way I'm making back the money I will spend on my MX5 but I'm tracking mine so it's not really about the money.

I do think with the mx5s if you keep on top of the maintenance and keep it in half decent nick, it will go up in price. Don't think you will be making any money after factoring in maintenance costs but when it comes to getting rid I don't think you will be massively out of pocket.

If any mx5 experts have a moment, I'd appreciate a link of what would be considered a good buy within the budget of £5-6k.

Just so I have something to gauge/compare to.

It seems there's many NC2 examples with 40-60,000 miles in that range

What are S2000s going for these days? When I had to sell mine 5 years ago I got £12k on part ex. 2006 and less than 30,000miles.

Wish I still had it, unsure if its still local or been taken to another country. Have decent condition examples started to appreciate yet?

I'd say £20k ish for one like that going by others on autotrader

Around £16 to £20k I’d say having just bought one.

Used to use that dealer a lot years ago, they were a decent bunch. Seems strong money but I'm a bit out of touch on cars prices, everything seems expensive to me, I'm sure you could buy it new for not much more than that back in the day, though perhaps it was nearer 30.

10mins down the road, just go and have a test drive :D

Enquired about an Abarth at a local dealer but i don't think I should do it :D I was just curious.

They would give an ok price for mine in PX but not quite what I would want

10 mins up the road

I agree with @sandys, given NAV (which is a pants any way) seems to be the only option on it, it seems a fair bit over where it realistically should be.
For what they're asking i would want either the BOSE, big step up over the standard Harman, or Visibility Pack, includes LED headlights/parking sensors etc and then an optioned paint or Colour Pack etc.

But if it's only down the road then definitely see if you can get a test drive, even if it's just to see what they're like. Although you'll probably want one instead of an NC afterwards

Thanks for that tbh I'm not up in the extras so appreciate you taking a look and advising on those, I agree that this one probably then isn't the best buy out there

May go see it anyway just to have a look at one in person.

But I should probably just stick the the MX5, clear the PCP and do away with finance altogether:)

It depends what you are looking for end of the day, different strokes for different folks, a similarly aged MX5 is not going to be half the price or as well specced, the Abarth is essentially like the 30th special eds ND2 or a slight step down but up from the Sport with the interior trimming and Brembos etc, that's a £23k MX5 right now.

Sure an older NC2 or ND might represent a better buy from a modding perspective and budget, I appreciate that, I bought a 2k bucket of an NC1 and proceeded to chuck many, many, thousands at it over the years and that was fine for me and my use case, not many people want to go down that path.

I think the S2000 is in a different league to an MX5. I know they are often grouped together, but you can't compare a well driven MX5 to a poorly driven S2000. If you take that pattern, look at videos of well driven S2000s.

The problem you have with the S2000 now is the price. You see quite poorly maintained high mileage multi owner cars that are going to need a few grand spent on them and its Its basically the same price as a 996 911. In my mind, that makes no sense at all. Granted, the 911 is more expensive to run day to day, but they're a another leap on in capability - I'm saying this as someone who had an S2000, and now has a 996.1 C2 Manual Coupe.

All that said, an MX5 is a great bit of fun - you shouldn't be disappointed with either car.

The S2000 has the better chassis, with double wishbone suspension. The cars were originally in a different price bracket. But the MX5 probably has the better steering feel TBH and the modern ones are much nicer inside.

Tbh I've decided that if I'm doing this, I'll be going with the original plan

Sell my car, pay off the settlement and use the remaining cash to pick up an MX5 (Approx £6k, with a bit of wiggle room from existing funds)

I think being car finance free in the current climate will be a big benefit (well for me, we still have a loan for gf's car but I can then pay this off much quicker)

Unless the MX5 is a bad one and costs me 100's over the coming months :)
