COVID-19 (Coronavirus) discussion

Now my dad is ill..... This Covid strain is WAY WAY Worse than anything in the first lot... High fever 39-42C, spreads VERY quickly, almost Phenomena. Mum has had covid before, but she said those times it just felt like a nasty cold. This time she couldn't even move

If it is the same/similar strain to what we had it can hit people hard but relatively briefly compared to older strains.

Mum sounded better today, so about a week of it I think. EX girlfriend also went positive last week ( I found out ), she used to always bark orders at me yet she was the one who got it! Oh well, I'm sure i'll get it at some point!

According to NS Scotland weekly figures for deaths including those involving COVID-19. Also released today were the weekly figures for deaths including those involving COVID-19. There were 1,284 deaths registered last week (6th to 12th March 2023), which is 55 or 4% above average. There were 62 deaths where COVID-19 was mentioned, which is 22 more than last week. This follows a weekly trend of increasing as the new covid variant thats hit India has increased suspected to be in UK since end of January. Two of my friends who are both young and healthy in twenties where both knocked for six by it for 4 days temps in 39c to 40c for a day and could barely move. Both of them have had covid numerous times and always been its just like the cold bro but this time where worried and said its different. Is it because they have had it numerous times its worse or the virus itself is worse its hard to tell as unless you have not had it thankfully like myself then we will never know.

To be fair to the anti mask brigade, it’s not great if you’re liable to froth at the mouth.

Also, why the faux outrage at me wearing an FFP2 or 3 on a train with all those coughing biohazards? I thought the libertarian argument would support me??

Maybe its just you.

So if there is no reliable evidence what are the mask fans on here basing their ‘expert’ opinions on…

Another **** take using just what you want to see from the article which does not support the point you are trying to make.

One thing I do agree strongly with about though:

"He added that the scientific field’s inability to conduct good clinical trials that gather robust data leaves us exposed and at risk of making the same mistakes in the next pandemic as we did in the last one."

Is there or is there not reliable evidence available?

Again, its behind a paywall so I can't read it. But when it says "masks" what is it on about? I don't care about cloth masks or even surgical masks. I'm only really interested in ffp2/ffp3 properly fitted like the nurses etc were wearing on ICU wards. Surely they wouldn't be wearing them around infectious patients if they didn't offer any protection?

There is decades of reliable evidence as far as the masks themselves go as to what they can and can't do - professional industries; medical, scientific, production, waste disposal and so on have relied on it for a long time.

Try https://12ft.io/

But in answer to your question..

A rapid review report published by the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) investigated if high-quality masks, such as the N95, KN95 and FFP2 coverings, protect clinically vulnerable people in the community from catching Covid.

However, the report was unable to find a single piece of scientific research which had usable data.

Sadly a lot of mask wearing was pushed for political/economy reasons rather than practical ones - as before I could only put my head in my hands at the sights of 100s of people crammed into theatres, etc. all wearing basic masks... although as people have mentioned it acts as a visual reminder there is a pandemic it is kind of wasted in that context.
