@Gerard a mate of mine is what you'd call a serious artist, exhibitions and the like. Talked me into visiting Tate Modern a couple of times, I get some but... I'm ignorant apparently.

The painting was a part of a gallery of portraits of people deemed "unusual," particularly of people with characteristics popular among travelling acts of the period, like dwarfism.

In response to the above:

I really like de Ribera, they've got dozens of his in the Prado- his work is often very gruesome.

Also, I see unusual people as "people", not freaks.
