Wild flower garden - first attempt

My seed scattering could use work. But got growth!

Empty nest now... All fledged.

It was very noisy on Monday night then I noticed very little activity last night and zero tonight so I had a little peek.

Bitter sweet :(:)... Wish I had seen them fledge...

It'll be left like that in case they come back for a 2nd brood. Clean out in Sept and put back up ready for next year... Possibly with anti-bird spikes on the roof for crow protection (it won't interfere with the small birds as they don't use the roof and fly straight to the hole)

I'm curious is the birdhouse hole too big maybe? Just with the picture of both chicks heads made me think its quite large and that's how the crow got in?

Size seems ok albeit I haven't measured... The adult birds only just make it in the hole as well. The crow didn't get it's head in, it just poked its beak in to get at them.

I'm inclined to think that the one it killed came out the hole and perhaps landed on the ground as, earlier that day, it did similar by coming out the hole but managed to flutter itself back in immediately before it dropped down...

Next time should be ok as I'll put those long thin metal tines on the top so it can't land.

We sowed some wild flower seeds in our flower bed. I found it was way to hard to differeniate between what we'd class as a weed, and the plants that we actually consider wildflowers.

They can be both... A weed is just a plant in the wrong place. One man's weed is another wildflower.

Little pansy in the last image... Strange thing is, I didn't sow or plant any  Must have came in on a bird or something.

This is how we get different things every year. We very rarely plant anything but stuff just sprouts up. We once got some really tall foxgloves and massive oriental poppies just appear from nowhere!

Soon you'll be on the way to this!

Yeah I'm hopeful by next year the area should fill out more. This year has been pretty pants for anything growing really :(

The birds will only go in if the hole is the right size.

Yeah mine is coming along ok... A bit more green cover but I'm not sure if I'll get much flowers this year. Still, it'll be a good start for next year.

I had to remove around 3-4 Prostate Knotweed the other day. I didn't know what it was until I google searched the photo of it... Horrible stuff by all accounts as just lays like a mat over everything else eventually. Tap roots were a out 8 inches already but looks like I got it all.

Also removed a couple of small Docks and Nettles while they are young.

Weeds!!

Seriously, that looks awesome :)
She is really pleased this year -although you can't see them there are quite a few wild poppies which she hasn't put in - I think they have come in from the field as it's only growing grass and weeds and they harvest it about 4 times a year for feed but there is a load of wild flowers in there.
What ever they put on that field is good stuff -4 weeks and it's a foot high already.
This is across the rear of garden and in the middle of that border is a spot with nothing in it so she sowed some wild flower seed -You will all be pleased to know her seeds haven't come up yet either.

looks excellent, must admit we seem to have poppies coming up everywhere and so many different colours and patterns, :)

This is what the local council did in the park out the front of my house last year. They seem to be doing it again this year but I don't think they have replanted any more new seeds because what is there hasn't taken very well yet.

Photo taken a year ago yesterday.

Hi. I googled "OCUK Wildflower" and was pleased to see there was such a recent thread. I'm planning on sowing my seed mix in early Autumn, ready for Spring. This would be across practically the entire lawn, rather than just a bed.

My lawn, unmowed, is currently a mix of patches of tall grasses, hogweed and ragwort. Some oriental poppies, foxglove and chamomile also.

Prior to sowing I was intent on just turning the soil and raking, rather than covering to try to kill everything. Do you think this will be sufficient? I'd rather avoid having to cover the entire lawn.
