Been doing looking into dp 1.4 and 2.1

Amd dp 2.1 but Nvidia got the power and got the dp 1.4.

Thinking about putting a spanner in the works and waiting for the next gen on Nvidia card, the 5000 series that should hopefully have dp 2.1

If you're worried about the refresh, I wouldn't be. You'll struggle to maintain 120 fps @ native 4K in the newer games, even with a 4090.

For now thinking about getting a Nvidia 3700 or 3800 which should be ok for now as a stop gap.

Think about those two cards should be on to run 4k or vr for the time being?

As said above, they will both struggle @ 4K nowadays and I don't think they make sense anymore with the 4070 out, unless they're cheap.

Don't: they have insufficient VRAM for modern games. Look instead at the 3090 and 3090 Ti. Both are well within your budget second-hand.

Was more looking at the 3800 as a temporary stop gap and then start saving again for the future Nvidia 5000 series cards

That is a loaded statement. The AMD cards can (and do) match the Nvidia ones except in RT. That does not worry me as I am more concerned with rasterization however, I understand DLSS (Nvidia) is better than FSR (AMD) but again, don't use either.

Either way, if you are looking at pushing high fps at 4k with RT, nothing but a 4090 will do. If you main concern is rasterization, then make a list of the games you want to play and see overall which GPU performs best with the largest number. For example, AMD performs better with Assassins Creed series and Nvidia with Cyperpunk etc etc.

Just look up a Hardware Unboxed video for specifics. Steve often does a large game roundup video so scroll down and look or a suitable match with the games you play and the level of performance you expect.

Ultimately, as the 4090 is not in budget, you choices are 4080/4070ti/4070 vs 7900XTX/7900XT unless you decide something from last gen is sufficient as a stop gap and this also allows for you to trawl for a s/h bargain

That is well what is along the lines I was thinking. Nvidia is hampered by the dsiplayport 2.1 support but it is a better card than the amd. To be fair the amd 78000xxx on women of the articles are great for hal of the games reviewed in well all the different formats including 1440p, 4k and vr.

Prob though since I'm not really that happy with this choices on offer for £1000+ I am probably will go for a sh Nvidia 3080 for under £500 that I can then move to an older machine when inter my new future card.

No idea why nvidia didn't include the display 2.1 from the start. If they did it would have been a no brainer.

If you’re going to spend £1100 then just save up a bit more for a 4090, it’s over 30% faster than anything else which puts it almost a generation ahead.

The other option is to pick up a 7900XT for £700 which being only 10% behind a 4080 makes it a lot closer despite the £400 price gap than a 4080 is to a 4090 with the same price gap.

I think Nvidia are currently viewing gamers as a distraction from the AI boom in a similar way they found them a distraction during the crypto boom.

Any silicon they provide for gaming GPU's is less available for their real market so they probably are putting in less effort and certainly not viewing it as a priority.

AMD are just jumping on the bandwagon and pricing at a discount to Nvidia - even though I see this as their opportunity to gain market share now and mind share for the future. Poor vision in this instance.

I don't blame Nvidia for following the money. I begrudge them though.

I have a preference for AMD when I feel that I get value for money (not always chasing to performance).

I do feel that AMD provides better longer term prospects by not changing sockets every other sesson like Intel and by providing long lasting driver support with improvements unlike Nvidia.

It therefore works out cheaper in the short, medium and longer term and provides that value (look at AM4 support) among with performance boosts over time (RDNA1 and RDNA2).

It is a personal preference but I am not clouded by brand loyalty. If the Blue or Green team give me something similar, I would go there too.

Think prob go with the last gen on second hand and then go through the graphic card battle another day.

The card I get now can go into a previous system and the future card can go until the current am4 system of form the basis of am5 where a whole new battle will comence.

Such is the wonder of tech. It always changed

Ok I could spend £1000+ on a card now but there's is other things that In life that I could spend £600+ now
