As above. Ideally would like to spend about £3k as it’s his first one and I’m not really sure what to be looking at. He’s not so bothered about what he drives and the deal is that I pay for the car and he pays for the the insurance. Ideally looking at £2k max for the insurance if possible. Getting some ridiculous quotes (£4k+) on 12 plate Clios and Polos and that’s not happening. Over to you chaps.

Thanks in advance. :)

Can't advise much on the car front but there is a common theme appearing in recent weeks where car insurance prices have sky rocketed for little to no apparent reasons (no policy changes just +1 year NCB) ; and way above levels of inflation (like everything else it seems).

May be able to save a bit on insurance by getting a black box and restricting use to daylight hours for the first year?

I know a couple of people who've passed their test recently with surprisingly low insurance on Fiat Pandas - albeit one of those is mid 20s with a management job which probably helps.

Polos always used to be amongst the cheaper to insure but seem to have gone a bit nuts on price and insurance lately for some reason.

Other options maybe Mazda 2 or Skoda Fabia, or try something a little larger - insurance can be really hit and miss for new drivers sometimes the cars you think would be bad for insurance aren't.

The cheapest quotes we were getting had to have a black box fitted but he’s not bothered about that to be honest so it’s an option we can take. I didn’t know about daylight hours insurance but he works at the pub part time so this might not work for him.
We’ll have a look at the suggestions mentioned today and see where we are. Funnily enough we did look at the i10 and it’s the only one where he really turned his nose up, but as we all know he does need to get these first couple of years out of the way so he can’t be too picky. What about the i20? Assume that’ll be cheap to run and fairly bulletproof?

Thanks again - really appreciate the advice.

When i was getting quotes for cars recently i noticed cars that were atleast 20 years old or so the quotes seemed to be cheaper? i'm not sure if they were counted as classic insurance or something, it might be worth considering old cars if you can find 1 in good condition.

To counter this, the chances of him being in a crash are pretty high being a new driver so i'd say get something as new as possible.

both my nephews have a Peugeot 107 as a first car, although i think they were more than 3K even though they are old and basic.

Its madness, the prices today are just crazy. My first car was a few hundred quid and it drove fine.
