Thoughts on Excessive Speed

Born Again Biker syndrome?

Last had a bike 30 years ago. Purchased a new sports bike and found its performance far exceeded his skill.

Alas, it’s not uncommon.
Or first time out since the bike went away at the end of last summer, tend to see quite a lot of rip posts in the biker groups over the first couple of nice weekends for that reason.

100% this.
I wish car drivers would have to ride cycles to be able to pass their tests.
My Son in Law who drives a truck has to take cycle courses and said he's never been so scared.
@Scania have you done similar training because he's done it twice now?
Not in my somewhat extensive experience tbh, that said, during driver CPC courses we are often reminded of the vulnerability of cyclists and indeed as one myself (albeit of being without a bicycle for a few years now) I’m always extremely careful around them as they are undoubtedly the most vulnerable (and most stupid at times let’s say it) road users…

I literally don't understand why anyone cycles many of the roads around here, even if they don't have any other form of transport, you are literally taking your life in your hands.

Haven't seen anything in the local news but the other night driving home came across a scene of a mangled bike and the emergency services working over someone on the ground plus distraught car driver.

Always give plenty of space to cyclists. Endless patience for Learners too.

He drives for Dockseys who are Leek way and he's already had two cycle awareness courses in 10 years.
He's now been sub-contracted to Pointons near Wetley Rocks/Cheddleton, those with all the smelly animal carcasses.

Working for a decent employer = Nigel (Docksey) is a sound guy, well respected locally - with reason.

I've very nearly gone to Pointons a few times, the smell is just too much! :D

Currently at Browns Distribution, Tunstall, it's a steady number to be fair, new premeses, decent kit and generally they leave you to it... - A holiday camp after Stobart's tbh, which in itself was far from a hard job!

He says because he just gets in the cab and drives he doesn't smell it. You certainly know when you drive past one.
Several years ago one overturned by the Meir tunnel, you could smell it for miles.

I remember that incident well, and them bringing Stone to a standstill for a similar reason!!

I'll stay with Browns for now, my Scania's lease is up in a few months, if I'm not allocated another I'll be looking elsewhere most likely (Volvo & Scania being my preferred choice of mobile office) but, ultimately, yes he's right, you just get in and drive no matter what the name of employer on the cab nor the marque of the manufacturer....

My band is now in jeopardy because the guy who drives most of the gear around in a trailer is already on 9 points and just got caught speeding again :(
This is 4 times on his meat delivering job he has been caught speeding but you would think on his first time he would have slowed down.
I do know people who have had 12 points and still kept their license for one more chance, what is the likelihood of that happening for 4 speeding tickets and if he gets a ban what ban could he get?

Just thought I'd update this because he's an idiot.
He rang me up today saying he's had his papers yesterday to go to Court and already rang 2 Solicitors who say he's got a great case for exceptional circumstances so he details what he told the Solicitors -
1) He's nearly 65 and driving is his job, the chances of getting another one at his age is very slim (true).
2) He picks his autistic grandson up from school to look after him (true)
3) If he got another job he can't work around multiple people because he can't stand crowds
4) He does jobs for his Mum & Dad, he has to drive there to look after them and go shopping for food

Woah stop there.
"You play in a band to hundreds of people but you can't stand crowds. Your Mum and Dad live 200 yards away and there's a supermarket on the way, you can't tell them lies".
He said they won't know about stuff like that and I said "Well you've never watched stuff like Claimed & Shamed, you need to tell the truth".

Anyway let's see how he goes on.

You can BS all you want if they have no proof otherwise, all depends how convincing you are. Either way they'll deliberate for 5 mins and move onto the next case.

If these points for him are critical to him helping his family why does he continue to speed? It seems that the courts have been to lenient already, as is the case for most motoring offences committed. Vehicles are leathal if not driven appropriately so the driver has to take responsibility for their actions and the law should recognise that.

Guy sounds like an entitled ass-hat. If looking after his family is so important why's he continuing to be a douche?

He knows that but I've also go to add that in the early 2000s he was riding his motorbike at speed and had a stroke
Even though he's passed off to drive he does forget sometimes which can be a PITA on stage when he suddenly forgets where he is :)
He has excellent historical recall but not very good modern recall
eg
Learning new songs is hard but he could flawlessly play a set he did with a band in the 90s.

100%, totally agree but he said, and he knows ignorance is no excuse, that the last two fines were for doing 60 in a 60 and he had no idea that in his lorry/van he is only supposed to do 50.
I've also never heard of this but I passed my test in 1975 like he did.

He doesn't know that heavier vehicles are speed restricted? Hope he doesn't tow a caravan...

Same as most large van drivers don't know that they are restricted to 60 on motorways and dual carriages.

Has he not ended up on at least one speed awareness course with all this speeding? They mentioned the differing limits for classes of vehicles multiple times on mine

He's had a new car but not sure if that's his latest caravan

I haven't asked him but I reckon his speeding fines go back decades because he's always rode motorbikes so classes went way past him.
I was in his house one day and thought he had DAVE on because there was an old Caught On Camera showing and he wound it back and said to watch the opening credits.
He said "See that idiot doing a wheelie at around 70mph, that's me".
I don't want to judge because I've been very very lucky not to be caught.
