Hi all,

After waiting on the 7800xt... I'm still no wiser what to do.

Monitor is a Ilyama red eagle 1080p with free sync premium. I have two of these and unlikely to upgrade soon.

Games played, predominantly from software titles and clones. Lots of Sekiro, I will likely play starfield as well though. (Big fallout fan)

I think I'm interested in value for money as much as anything as I don't game loads (life responsibilities!)

On the one hand I think 6700xt at as cheap as possible. But then I think actually at 1080p will I see the extra £100 difference. From a 6600 or 6650xt! I get the extra vram. But I love building so I'd be shocked if it lasted longer than 2 years.

Current card is a vega 64 sapphire triple fan version. I had even considered a 6800 but think it's likely a waste of cash.

System ryzen 3600, 32gb ddr4 3600 ram, may upgrade next year.

Tldr: 1080p card, cheap for from software titles, I used to just buy the £200 card every couple of years.

6700XT for me, only because the extra vRam and oomph will give it some longevity and you won't have to think about an upgrade for a fairly long time :)

I think it would be worth waiting literally a few weeks for the 7700xt/7800xt to launch and see what the deal is, it may even drop down the price of a 6700xt a tad further.

If you are set on playing Starfield the new cards might come with that bundled and then it might be a consideration when factoring cost (eg if you were going to buy Starfield anyway you can effectively knock the value of the game off the price) and see how it all looks then.

6700xt would be a solid choice though.

Get a 3rd 1440p monitor from OCUK for £229? (LG 165hz IPS).

This is the res everyone is playing at now do the 7800xt justice.

Cheers Budforce, Oh yeah I will likely wait a bit.

Back and forth on the starfield bundle as i do have gamepass (although if it runs at all on steamdeck I could see me playing on there)

Ghostdog,

Thanks for the monitor link, I think had work not been locked down with software I would have one ultrawide instead of 2 x 24", I dont have space for a third monitor width wise.
I do have a 4k tv wall mounted, but seldom used for gaming. Played some witcher 3 on it. (its only 60hz)

Thanks all!

Gamepass won't be cheaper if you end up playing 100s of hours(or even more) over a few years IMHO.

Is well worth considering. Of course you can go used, but they are not cheaper enough IMO, especially if you are after Starfield. From how I look at it you are paying around £310 for that with Starfield counted in.

True. I've got another couple of years that worked out just shy of £3 a month.

If it was just starfield it'd be one thing. But since they added football manager each year. It's probably worth it for me.

I will review once that periods up though, as theres no way I'll get it that cheap again and I'm super tight !

I'd get more out of it if I got windows onto my steamdeck. Effort though as I've got plenty of projects on at the minute.

I have been playing Fallout 4 since launch, etc so in that sense,I think the £40~£50 I spent ended up quite cheap over 8 years. Also I would imagine modding will be a bit more easier using a Steam/GOG version of the game. But the bigger issue is VRAM. We could see the RX7700XT 12GB drop below £400 at some point, but depends on whether Nvidia actually drops price or refreshes Ada Lovelace.

The £300 RX6700XT deal was pretty decent IMHO - it is about 60% faster than the Vega 64 according to Techpowerup. An RX6800 is almost 70% faster at 1080p and the RX7700XT might be broadly similar. Another consideration is the secondhand price of your current card - that will start to drop more as 8GB of VRAM becomes more of an issue. ATM, Vega 64 cards sell for around £100~£150 on the famous auction site.

RX 6600 is not fast enough to be worthwhile, TPU's 6600 review has (@ 1080p) Vega 64 at 97.1 FPS average and the RX 6600, 111.2 FPS.

If you plan to keep it for only 2 years, I'd just get a 6700 XT (as close to £300 as possible) with the Starfield bundle.

Cheers, I always forget about the modding aspect. That's a good call for starfield on Steam.. I think that gives me a deadline!

I keep forgetting about selling the vega. I think that's how I initally ended up thinking about a 6800. Will check the timeline out for the starfield deal and go from there!

Once again cheers all. I've been quite indecisive with this. It was so much easier pre vega and covid where I just got the new thing for £170 or less and repeat.

I'm using a 7600 right now and find it more than enough at 1080 (actually 2560x1080). It's significantly quicker than the Vega64 I just sold and the cooler is completely silent which is nice. I dont think vram is an issue yet for 1080. When you start to add in things like ray-tracing it might be.

Thanks for advice guys, I revised my plans after some of the good comments re copy of starfield, modding etc.

Ended up with a 6800 (non xt) for £370. Once I've sold the vega seems like a good upgrade.

Could you stretch another £100 for the 7800XT to get another 3 more years driver support and better productivity features?
