He would've been very active within the Nazi party if not the military since he later joined the Waffen SS, which teens were essentially groomed into and they'd only take die hard fanatics. I did see his date of birth prior to posting because I thought he must've been fairly young to have fought in WW2 and be 98 in 2023. I just thought it was funny he was given a standing ovation, the Russian propaganda wrote itself on that one.
Yet more trash talking from him (Medvedev) He's almost as bad as their TV shows.

If they wanted that, they would have done it already.
They 100% do not want a ground conflict with NATO as they would get annihilated.

There would be a very short air war followed by the absolute annihilation of all Russian grounds forces not smart enough to drop everything and run East.
Now that would be a special 3 day military operation. Maybe Medvedev wants Putin gone.

It feels like Russia think they somehow till scare the west, beyond their nuclear weapons.
From everything we have seen in Ukraine, Russia have nowhere near the capability to invade/engage in a conventional war with NATO.
I'm genuinely shocked as to how much of a struggle just taking and holding a few parts of Ukraine has been for them. To think they could in anyway fight and counter all the latest military hardware that the US and the entirety of western Europe has is hilarious.

It's really interesting to see their tactics.
No attempt to gain air dominance, holding back their modern fighters and tanks (presumably either because they're paper tigers or the need to save face to keep up export sales), the vulnerability of their air defense systems, the reliance on artillery and human waves instead of combined arms warfare.
Ukraine on the other hand has suprised with their adaptability, some very clever shaping of the battlefield to allow attacks such as the Black Sea Fleet HQ etc.

It is interesting that Ukraine has destroyed the mainstay of what used to be the USSR's fleet for a theoretical invasion of Europe - sure Russia has somewhat trickled it in, doesn't have the manpower of the USSR and some former member states have inherited some of the former USSR's military equipment but still.
Ignoring nuclear I think the biggest threat to the West from Russia is our own lack of preparedness giving them a potential edge they shouldn't have and/or a degree of hubris, especially when it comes to the potential for hybrid or other types of warfare - even things like the lack of vision when it comes to them manipulating the UN because they are prepared to do things we almost consider unthinkable.
What we are seeing is a weakness fortunately with any country which is run like Russia or China - yes men up and down the chain of command, lack of autonomy in the ranks out of fear of losing a grip on power, corruption despite the harshness of penalties, little ability to adapt and so on.
It would be over in about 2 days.
You'd hope so - there is a lack of preparedness, vision and appetite in the West which might see them getting much further than they should in that eventuality, although weakened at the moment Russia still has plenty of potential to grow into a significant military power - they've far from exhausted their manpower despite the impression some seem to have, have the resources to eventually get production up to speed on a lot of hardware and sanctions are being flouted too much and/or help from places like China enabling them to have at least some supply of advanced semiconductors, etc. their pace is erratic but give it 2-3 years they can potentially have a larger and more modernised military than they started this war with if we aren't careful.
I would think and expect NATO will have detailed and extensive war plans for a Russian invasion of a member state, I don't agree we aren't prepared. The USAF has incredible lift capacity to move troops and equipment. We have thousands of combined fighters and bombers, we have safe air fields to accommodate B-52s across all of Europe, the US Navy could essentially guarantee the safe delivery of equipment across the Atlantic. It would be so one sided that short of nuclear weapons being used, most of us wouldn't even know we were fighting a war because there wouldn't even be a need to call up civilians. Russia would be forced to surrender within 1 month, very generously.
1 week i reckon, Air war for a couple of days, followed by huge amounts of Cruise missiles hitting supply lines, depots, all with pin point accuracy.
St Petersburg will be cut off by the end of day 4 and then its just a march on Moscow which will hold out well enough until the air war kicks in. Allies will blow the old KGB HQ to smithers to try and prevent another mini putin.
Then the USA will demand a puppet goverment and in 8-10 years time the entire region goes to **** and we are all dead via dodgy nuclear materials.
Life is good.

One aspect is availability of ammunition and reserves of it - in a real shooting war you tend to use 10x the amount that seems to be envisioned and prepared ready. Having the plans in place is one thing but in reality things rarely go that smoothly once things kick off and that exposes anywhere complacency, etc. has crept in.
