You can get it on a £350 7a
As I walked through London today it’s just a barrage of iPhones. Everywhere. And this is me in that camp as well. So depressing to see.
Took a look in my local EE shop after work on the way home to see the 15’s-and they are exactly that. iPhones.
But then I took a look at the Pixels and finally saw a Pixel Fold for the first time.
What an absolutely beautiful device.

Folding phones are a gimmick if you ask me. Happy enough with the standard form factor. You just know the hinge will break and the screen will start to fail down the middle after so many open/closes. Just the nature of anything mechanical like that.

The ability to fold is single handedly the greatest evolution in mobile phones for some time. Apart from the folding form factor, phones have been stagnating for some time with only SoC upgrades and camera sensor upgrades.
Surely a gimmick is something not useful, being able to expand your usable screen estate from a pocketable form factor can't be described as not useful? It's very useful for content consumption and web browsing, and to some extent is great for productivity. I say some extent because there are genuine use cases for split screen (I've lost count the amount of times I run the calculator app alongside banking apps for example), but I still don't find the bigger screen useful for content for making Excel/Google sheet documents, mainly because those apps are watered down and/or have too many UI elements event for a tablet screen.

A standard phone screen is fine for out and about. Just use your tablet at home if you need bigger.
And you know the folding bit will break.

I don't have a tablet and even if I did, a tablet doesn't fit in my pocket.
Will the hinge break? Probably, but the question is will it last the time I'm likely to have the phone for. I had the Samsung Fold 2 for near three years before moving to the Pixel Fold and the hinge held out.
As for the price, sure it's expensive and Google don't have the brand equity in mobile phones that Samsung do. However, if you want a folding phone with a outside screen ratio close to a non-folding phone then you literally only have one choice (outside of getting hold of a imported Find N2 which won't ever work with Google Pay, even with Google Play services sideloaded).
I saw one the other day for the first time.
It looked like the fold was a bit grubby/tatty.
I've never really understood the appeal apart from it's new and different. Especially as any video will basically have huge black bars as most is 16:9ish now
Sure you get a bit more reading space on documents etc.
I doubt many apps are optimised for it anyway.
But the drawbacks seem high. I doubt it's waterproof? It looks quite bulky, it must be more fragile. I'm yet to see any really compelling use cases apart from "cool" factor

I guess because mobile tech has been very stagnant for quite a few years now and this is actually something new. But way too many drawbacks for me to be interested.
As you say, they are very bulky and heavy. Apps aren't optimised for them. And they are fragile around the hinges.
But, it is still fairly early days for this tech, so maybe all the issues will get sorted and the price will drop. Could be viable in say five years maybe.
