The PGMOL claim that the VAR believed the onfield decision was a goal, not offside and said "check complete" to indicate goal. IF that was the case then why the **** didn't the VAR get back on the radio and correct the mistake once he realised the ref wasn't giving the goal?

My head is exploding. I don't understand why Darren England didn't just say to the ref before the restart there has been a misunderstanding.

Edit. Ok, i need to start watching MOTD. Reading the comments here though, even if England hadn't noticed before the restart, surely they could have stopped the game, got the captains round and explained what is happening.

The excuse is that the VAR's only words were "check complete", which had the goal been awarded would have meant the goal standing. The question mark over the excuse is what's happened in the 30 seconds between him saying "check complete" and Spurs taking the free-kick.

Either the VAR has lent back, lit up a cigar and patted himself on the back for the good job he done, completely oblivious to the fact the goal hadn't been given or it's a big fat lie to cover up sheer incompetence.

It's just mental that it's even possible to simply say "check complete". Every other sport with a similar system has proper communication. "Yes, he's grounded the ball so award the try" or "yes, Hawkeye shows that he's LBW so stick with your decision and give him out". Whoever decided that it should be possible to run that kind of check without first confirming that they were aware of what the on field decision was is a complete and utter cretin.

gotta be honest, i started replying here before finishing the twitter thread. Still though, seems mad that allowances can't be made for this type of stuff. Lesser of two evils, carrying on the game with the totally incorrect score is far worse than a bit of confusion/delay about the goal.

I'm interested to know if the ref was told at HT or after the match. You usually see them try and even things up when they've made a mistake yet he couldn't wait to give Jota his first and second yellow cards.

Whoever was in the VAR booth got it wrong completely and shouldn’t be in there again. If they took a poo break, they shouldn’t be there again for neglecting their duties.

At minimum they should have drawn the likes, they never done their job. “Check complete”, BS, they never did their checks.

No, the story they've given/made up is the check was to give the goal rather than the offside so the check complete was them saying the goal was fine, no reason not to give it.

I kind of hope this excuse is true and we get to hear the audio of it. What on earth is the VAR saying to the ref after he realises the goal hasn't been given and what's the ref's response.

Pre VAR, ironically involving Liverpool & Spurs again, Sky picked up a conversation between Jon Moss and his lino regarding a possible offside/penalty where the lino is asking Moss a question regarding the build-up of the attack, Moss admitting he didn't have a clue what happened, Moss then getting on the mic and asking if the 4th official could see anything on a pitchside monitor and then basically saying **** it, I'm giving the penalty. This is why we'll only ever get carefully selected snippets of audio from the PGMOL.

I honestly wouldn't be surprised if the audio's lost and the ref was repeatedly told he had made a mistake.

On the screen it said, check complete offside, surely only var input this? or is that a sky/BT thing. If its var then this new excuse just doesnt make sense

I was at the game today. It was weird - the screens inside the stadium showed “VAR check in progress” for about five minutes and never showed the check complete bit. Was it a case of fat fingers from the VAR ref?

Either way, great result. Fortune favours the brave.

I wonder if they will try and "balance the books" by awarding Liverpool a really soft penalty shout in the return match at Anfield. I must remember to put a bet on there being a pen in that game.

Like Liverpool haven't had enough soft penalties! is it a massive balls up? Oh yes it was, are Liverpool the only team it has happened to? No they’re not. Sometimes people need to Stop acting like the worlds against them. It was a stonewall red card, but the yellows for the second red were really harsh and you had a perfectly good goal ruled out(we had 3 of those last season that would have given us 6 more points), life goes on and tomorrow is another day.

It was just a wondering thats all. Hence the word wonder in it.

Its not about the world being against Liverpool, these decisions shouldnt be happening against any team.

Your absolutely right, the good thing it there is likely something to be done about it now as it’s happened to a “sky6” club, had it happened to a Luton/sheff utd it would have been “sorry about that, we will learn from it”
