EV general discussion

Sounds like people are learning and it hardly ever happens tbh
That and with modern EVs, range is much less of an issue than with previous generation EVs.

Test drove an Enyaq 80 this morning, nice but I have to decide if I still really want or need such a big car (currently have a Tiguan Allspace diesel...)
Felt really heavy too which I was sort of expecting after doing a bit of research on them.
After that, popped across the road to Renault and took a Megane E-Tech out for a spin, now that felt really nice!
Obviously a totally different car and a smaller battery / range but it felt a bit more fun being in a small car again after so many years of 7 seat monstrosities.
So, we'll see.

If/when we go EV the heating will most definitely be on when needed. I see plenty of EV drivers wearing coats and hats in their cars. I certainly don't intend to be one of them.
Off to test drive an Enyaq this morning, it will be my first full EV experience. :D
I have never ever ever done anything other than normal heating/air-con.. but it most certainly is a thing.. I will always just do a splash and dash at a public charger rather than freeze everyone..

Hope the test drive goes OK.. I wanted to hate the MEB platform cars, but was very impressed when I actually test drove one..
I have a genuine question, and no shame in it if it has happened (cards on table, i ran out of petrol once, it was fully my fault and i knew i was pushing it too far).

despite all the range FUD in the gutter press leading to anxiety (and my wife now still worries about our car despite it beating all range targets that i had in my head so far)

has anyone here run out of electrictiy to a point of being stranded? because i know a few with EVs, inc really low range ones........ and i only know of one person who ran out of charge (that was a small battery leaf and it was totally her fault, she chose not to charge the car because she wanted to wait for a cheap charging on electricity and then went out in the car despite it being on single digit miles range showing.)

OTOH I know a number of people (myself included) who has run out of petrol.

My point is.... range anxiety IS a thing but in reality, i think its much harder to run out of charge in an EV than it is to run out of petrol.

Also hand on heart if i had a knock at the door now and someone said they were really sorry but their car was out of charge and was in limp mode please would i hook up to my chargepoint for a few hrs and they offered me a 5er for instance.

I would absolutely have no problem doing it so long as i was home and my car was not charging (and they could go over the road to the cafe and have a coffee), and i dare say many of us ev owners are the same. (in truth it would be unlikely to happen - there are 4 BP pulse charge points 50m from my house).....

but my point is, i think it is unlikely an EV driver would ever be in a position to be completely stuck, and even IF they were am sure people would help out.....

No.. never run out.. I've chanced it down to 5 miles range, and even deliberately gone down to 0miles to do a battery test..

It's nice to hear from the largest fleet providers on these things.. they cover the running out of juice.. seems misfuelling is the bigger issue, but you are more likely to run out in an ICE car than EV..

However.. you get far less anxiety in an ICE car.. the state of public charging means having a Plan B and maybe Plan C in case chargers have large queues, or just out of order..

I do think you need some form of taxi rank system for chargers, i.e. a lane for 'waiting'.. so first come first served as someone leaves.. it's easy at a lot of places, just needs some white lines moving/painting..

Its interesting trying to work out how much of the 'problems' with electric are just FUD - we get it a lot in our industry where the competition will find whatever niggle someones had with the product / project, blow it out of all proportion and start spreading around the Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt.

You have to remember that (tin foil hats at the ready) there are a lot of people and businesses whose value is very tightly bound into the ICE infrastructure and supply chain.

Worth watching this, dont worry about the clickbait title.

'Charge anxiety' is the new range anxiety. With EV range and rapid charging being pretty decent these days the biggest issue people have is will the charger you want be working and free when you need it?

Didn't realise the enyaq is a 7 seater? Be sure to check out the other offerings too e.g ioniq 5,ev6, polestar 2, q4

Put simply, you get a lot less range anxiety in any car capable of 300 miles before needing to refuel, than you do in one that needs charging every 50 miles. :p

Indeed. They're getting much better though. MFG and the new GridServe hubs are fantastic to use.

what options are on the menu, Koreans,Jap, as well as EU
.... are the potential 2024 rules of origin import tax part of any calculations/dealer spiel.

I won't lie .. it's a valid concern I guess if you absolutely need to charge at a peak time. fortunately for me it's only an issue for a handful of times a year where I even need to think about it.

I don’t find range anxiety to be a thing - it’s more charge time anxiety, knowing that unless I’m letting my wallet get gang-banged for rapid public charging then I’m stuck on a three pin plug. So far I’ve made it all work and I’ve ordered a home charger but it’s definitely not something that was ever an issue in an ICE car…

Yeah it is a bit of a barge! Have it on my shortlist when it comes to looking in 12m time. Plenty of choice out there, just avoid VW offerings as the infotainment system is terrible.
The 80 Sportline is changing to the 85X and becoming awd for MY24, with updated 4.0 software. It's a lovely car, but I was very aware of the size and weight. Just not sure I want something so big again, one, I'll just fill the boot with crap as usual, and two, my Tiguan was a PIA to park in London a few weeks ago (an underground carpark at a hospital) whereas something small like the Megane would have been very easy.
