Small Car Only

I bought an MX5 RF about 18 months ago, its a car I have always wanted and despite my 6ft4" frame I bought one.

Although it was a snug fit and after a few months of my back getting used to the low seat and squeeze it was fine.

What a car it was been, great engine, perfect in the snow and not costing me too much fuel, great drive in the sun and security in the winter.

Just last week I went to get out of my car as usual and my back went (pop) .... took me 15 mins and my wife to get me out of the car....

So as I can't get in it now and using my wife's car for work it'll have to go.....

I reckon I can get £13k for it if I sell it private cos part ex is terrible, and I need that £13k to buy another car.

I only want a small motor as it is only used for work and back (13 miles of town traffic, max speed 40mph).

We have a Ford Focus Estate so know need for another big car.

Don't like anything Korean or French..... Prefer the jap or German stuff.

Would never have a another Ford.... or Vauxhall.

As I still like the small cars I have my eyes set on a either a Suzuki Ignis or VW Up GTI.

These are something I have always liked and find them more efficient than most.

What are your thoughts?
 
Have you test driven any of those smaller cars? If your back is now giving you issues I'm not sure how comfortable they would be. Might be worth going up a size to (I know you don't want one) but something in the size class of a Hyundai i20 still reasonably sized but not quite shoe box on wheels.

I've sat in both of these and they both have plenty of legroom.

My back is better but I just dread another problem when I get out.

Much prefer a smaller car; better in crap weather, more fuel efficient.

I had an Aygo a while back, it was like a tardis.... just a bit slow after having the MX5 (1.5)
 
The small SUV segment are basically the worst cars on the road. Taken a perfectly good small car and wrecked it by slapping it on stilts. They're no more comfortable either.

For back pain, I personally recommend making sure it has heated seats and then using them on low year round. Stops all my back issues.

I've driven the Skoda CityGo which is their take on the VW Up, although not equivalent to the GTI trim. It had a very bargain basement feel to it, but it was comfortable enough and handled pretty well, I suspect with the better engine of the GTI it could be a lot of fun.

There's not much difference in the height of the seat from the floor between something like an Up and something like a Kamiq; but there's a huge difference between an Up and an MX-5. Also, in an Up you have a grab handle for getting out with, but a convertible naturally can't have one.
 
I’ve got a 2016 Ford fiesta st, returns 42mpg and is fun at the same time aswell as comfy, I’m 6ft and a big chap and it’s fine for me pottering about in

A colleague at work has a basic Up, when I sat in it I can't believe how much higher and more room it has over my MX5. I have long legs and arms to so there is no need for reach in the steering wheel.
