EV general discussion

This thread moves quickly!

Admiral won’t insure it, neither will AXA, AA or Directline. Flux said 3k, Tescos said 9k!! Best I can get is £1500 through esure. I pick the car up on Thursday so will keep looking.
Current car is an Alfa Giulietta Quadrifoglio Verde and I pay £500. Have 19 years no claims.
now that is the scariest thing in this whole thread imo. and this insurance issue has come out of the blue and without warning. dissapointment for anyone looking to buy a performance EV who may now rethink it but disastrous for those who bought one after doing their due diligence and having paid sensible insurance on the car for the last few years and not had any incidents.

It’s not a performance EV thing, it’s an I-Pace thing. I bet if @rebel rebel tried insuring a Taycan, Audi GT, Etron Q8 it would be cheaper to insure.

I was reading the Taycan forum and some UK owners are getting quotes around the £1k mark.

It’s the fire recall thing I bet.

if it is the battery software update that is bonkers. just how many ipaces have gone up due to the faulty LG batteries? more importantly how many have gone up after the software update to monitor the battery. Jaguar could probably have kept quiet and done nothing and other than a few scare stories no one would have bothered.

IF it is that however hopefully it's a storm in a teacup. if the software works and no more thermal runaways happen then maybe insurance companies will settle down. I won't lie tho, it would have stopped me buying my ipace if I was looking at a 3 figure insurance bill

I doubt it’s the battery issue, it’s probably just like Tesla in that repair time are long due to parts shortages.

Also aren’t JLR products vulnerable the keyless theft and stolen often (certainly the ‘R’ in JLR is)? That probably doesn’t help…

The long repair times affect many manufacturers. You can also still insure an ICE Jaguar for similar costs to contemporary ICE cars. That leaves the only outlier to be the ongoing battery issue. Jaguar did a recall but messed that up on hundreds of older I-Paces as the dealerships ignored Jaguar and used the wrong tools.

So the I-Pace does indeed seem to be a high risk for insurers at the moment.

Lucky for some then

Just ran a quote for my old ICE car. Same details everything was £450/yr now the cheapest is £780/yr

£190 for my Elise with 0 excess this year. Cheaper than last year.

Diesel daily about £250. Also slightly cheaper than last year. Has no alarm either.

Seems like EV owners are paying for everyone else right now :D

Throughly engaging… most vocal is interesting has a GR86 and then Elise which is cool but means fringe and you can keep them for along as you want.

No one is gonna nick your diesel anyway Nasher

The guy at the dealership said he thinks it’s the repair times.
None of the insurers that declined to insure said they were allowed to say why. AXA my current insurers have said they won’t charge me a cancellation fee.
I think I used to pay around £400 for my GT86.

Mine was £280 this year (renewed in September). Few £ more than last year, but expected as much with inflation as it is.

I don't think it's 'EVs' specifically. Just some cars.

ICE is getting hammered too with insurance costs, or did those two miss that thread?

Doesn’t fit the narrative so no it’s ignored cos most people are “I’m alright Jack” mentality and don’t thing about the wider effects of larger population.

Nasher is the perfect case study for this.

I see he's just posted in that thread blaming rising thefts for the increased costs so I assume he's just trolling in this one then...

... and the computer says

yep - qed
Due to the nascent nature of the industry, BEV incident claims are currently 25.5% more expensive than their ICE equivalents and can take 14% longer to repair, suggests Thatcham.
