Hey all,

I've been using Zenmate Chrome extension for years, but it seems they have stopped supporting since May 23 - it has also stopped connecting completely for the past few weeks :(

What's the recommendation for a free VPN?

Ta.

None you can't trust them.

I wouldn't touch the ones that offer lifetime for a cheap price either (most times these people sell data or keep logs plus lie about it)

Zenmate are owned by Kape, an advertising company known for previously purposefully infecting 'client' machines with bundled malware. Their privacy policy will confirm to you that they log your IP, OS, browser and other details, as well as logging your data and selling it to third parties. Run, don't walk, away. As above, Proton for free VPN, though they don't have a free UK node. Just pay the <=£5 a month for one that won't bend you over.

No such thing as free.

Usually, no. Certainly the premise of 'If you aren't paying, you're the product' holds almost universally. It's important to point out, however, that as a privacy company run by scientists and academics, Proton purposefully subsidise the 'free' tier by unashamedly having their paid tiers as, shall we say, not as cheap as most other VPNs. They are clear about this, and why, and I think that's fair. If you can afford to pay (and get a vastly richer feature set), you do. If you can't, you benefit from the overall mission to improve privacy globally, and are subsidised by the paying members. It's literally a socialist system.

OP, further to my earlier post about 'just pay the <=£5 a month': If you're even mildly technically capable, you can set up a VPN on a free VPS like Oracle in the UK, and never pay a penny. The IPs are generally clean, and work with 'most' streaming platforms. YMMV but it's certainly an idea for free.

I did a bit of research and ended up going with Surfshark. Costs about £4 per month but performance is very good and reviews are excellent.

Did you not use any of the deal offers?

I wouldn't bother going for the bundle versions not worth the money they just bloat it out.

The starter version is fine and can be had for around £55 for 24 months.

I prefer airvpn myself who currently cost a bit more but you sign up when it deal time black friday etc.

Review would be excellent they pay people a lot of money (or cashback deals paying back 70-80%)

You are correct - forgOt about the deal £1.69 per month or £45.63 FOR 27 months

Whats wrong with using Mullvad, I use there wireguard client on my router, costs £4.35 per month, but you can download the app for your PC for the same price and just buy it month by month, if you dont need it one month, dont buy it etc etc, they dont store any personal details, there is no registration required.

They even have a browser now running on the Tor network

Mullvad's browser does *not* run on the Tor network. They released a Firefox fork with some of the Tor uplift efforts (privacy, security etc) to help blend together users and minimise their browser fingerprint. It's designed to be run alongside their VPN, but does not and cannot connect over Tor. Just to be clear - as mistaking such a thing could be... inconvenient.

They're a good company and a fairly decent VPN, but since they removed port forwarding their use-case rather shrank.
