EV general discussion

Honestly, the whole efficiency thing is overblown unless you do very long range trips regularly
This ^

I have a Mini E. It should do a whole 145 miles on a full charge, but that's no fun.

So I do a quick trip to town and put it on charge.
I drive an hour (there & back) to see my daughter and put it on charge.
I nip to my parents and back (75 mins) and put it on charge.
I still haven't used more than 70% in one day.

Also, the one time my wife decided to jump in the Mini was also the one time I forgot to charge it, so sees only 30miles range. But, that would have been enough to do the 7 mile roundtrip 4 times....
I do at least 2 x trips of 250 miles per month down to see my Dad hence my range anxiety
Instead of asking this in a Petrol-like,
how many tanks to do the journey? how long to fill to max?

What if you think of it as
How many miles would I need in reserve when I get back to my house?
How long would the extra xxxx miles to charge?

So if you are doing 250 miles with a 220 mile range, and you want a spare 30 miles to avoid anxiety, can you add 50 miles of range in less time than
  • it takes to walk to the services loo and back?
  • less time than it takes to queue at the coffee shop?
For my car, a 0-80% high speed charge is supposed to be 38mins...so 10 mins queuing for Starbucks suddenly becomes a lot more rewarding.

Did anyone ask if electric/bev - polestar 2 for same £25k money https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202311234224088
but maybe insurance and £40K ved is prohibitive vs 320iM

[ not really convinced by symons premise that because a bev is typically faster 0-60 than petrol car the insurance is expected to be more

Did you mean to reply to my message from another thread? It threw me for a minute I must say.

I like the look of the Polestar 2 and would be tempted if I could afford new. I have no reason to justify it but my gut feeling makes me uncomfortable buying a used electric car. The AT ad you linked doesn't work for me unfortunately so I couldn't see how it compared to the really cheap 320i I saw.

What exactly is your gut telling you that is bad about a used BEV Vs a use ICE car?

I bought a year old Polestar from Volvo in July - the battery pack has an 8 year/100,000 mile warranty.

It was pretty much the battery that I was uneasy with but 8 year warranty helps there.

Aside from that I'd have to make sure insurance prices weren't significantly higher and that I was happy with the charging infrastructure. I haven't taken much notice of it but I've heard it can be a hassle queuing for a charge in a stop-off for a long journey.

I really don't see us going for an EV any time soon. I'd like to think there's something better, not too far in the future, to replace fossil fuel engines and EV.

Always useful to get insurance quotes before you buy cars to make sure you know the full running cost.

EV are higher ticket cars, insurance will tend to be higher for higher ticket cards.

Polestar 2 is £44k base car rising to £63k. That’s M3 realm so if you compare insurance price on that I dunno proabbly similar between EV and ICE. I think the issue with insurance is that EVs are a price bracket more expensive than the equivalent ICE and people aren’t adjusting their expectation to that price increase but only thinking that my equivalent ICE is £xxx insurance so the EV should be similar and forgetting that the EV is £10+ more expensive.

Lol. This summer I did a 3,800 mile trip to Venice. I do those as often as I do 200 mile trips.

And no, not in an EV.

That’s the point isn’t is?

Once you get into cars that have the capability of the new Polestar 2 or a Tesla, 200 miles or 2,300 miles is neither here nor there when compared to an ICE in the real world.

The limiting factor is no longer the car, it’s generally the human driving the car.

Why didn’t you take the mini on 2300mile trip. Charging that would get tiresome.

I had one on order then realised it didn’t suit my driving and so cancelled it for the cupra. Even a 105m motorway journey would need a stop off and 50kW is pretty slow

Not sure why people share their usage as ok for them then assume it must be ok for others.

50kW charging is ample for a small 37kWh battery. Nobody with an ounce of sense buys a mini EV for anything other than a city car or short range commute.

50kW you mean. Still the mph charging speed is slow on a longer trip

I realised going to Heathrow and back would be faf for me in winter. 45miles each

Semantics over a mistype now? Not one single person here has implied a mini electric is a long range trip EV. That was you creating a straw man because thought you were being smart, but you are basically arguing with yourself now.

Did you see the post comparing to ice and how charging wasn’t an issue ? When replying to headrat regarding 250 mile trips and saying a Starbucks is long enough to charge?? Maybe you are finding a strawman by not reading ?

Just making it clear in case anyone thought a mini was a 50kWh battery. Not sure what’s being smart about discussing stuff but hey.

Well yes, you don’t charge an ICE car by definition…

Electric can’t match ICE for long range - everyone knows this. You also wouldn’t take a mini on a 2300 miles road trip unless you were an enthusiast…

The point was made that the human endurance is more of an issue on long range journeys, if you use a 200+ range EV. Just confused where the mini EV even entered into this.
