EV general discussion

My revised shortlist is 2021 Kona, e-Niro, Renault Megane with 22kW charging. Other nice-to-haves would be 4 wheel drive and cabin preheating via an app.

There's a few things that would really help EVs, 22kW charging as standard is one, as that would be the sweet stop for time/charge I think.

The other is more EV chargers of course, they are increasing/improving. Where possible an EV charger should have 2 spaces, one of the person charging and one for the next person waiting. The charger should have a big display showing charge time left.

The other big issue is the greed of EV charger providers, since we all know the true cost of electric, seeing the price premium is marked up so high is fairly depressing, but you know, capitalism I guess. Over time the supply and demand will be meet and costs will come down eventually, or there will be some kind of public outcry and regulation.

What do you think will be the eventual up take of EVs, 10 years, 20 years from now? I guess eventually there will no longer be ICE cars, or (expensive) biofuel maybe.

Why do you need 22kW. It’s not fast enough for public and most are charged overnight or in a work car park where 7kW is enough

I'm surprised that the self proclaimed charging police, sorry, those pushing "charger etiquette" haven't come up with some way if reserving your turn on the charger. Like the old 50p on the pool table ;)

Not sure how a timer would work either as people get their knickers in a twist if you charge above 80% anyway when it's busy.

Price wise... I don't know. Hasn't the investment in the kit got to be covered somewhere?

As for crystal ball gazing, in 10 years we'll obviously be seeing the ICE stock on the roads being replaced with EVs as EV will be outselling ICE, if not completely replacing it by then. As for 20 years... I predict we'll all be looking back with rose tinted glasses of how cheap motoring was back in the olden days.

Tesla have the charging side of things nailed on, I noticed my local shopping centre (merry hell:p) now has Tesla SC's. They are very well priced aswell.
Now they just have to open the chargers up to all non-Tesla owners! My ex used to live not all that far from Merry Hell, sadly it's a bit far for me now. But yes, ideal time to charge, somewhere you'll be for about an hour.

22kW chargers at destination isn’t as common as you seem to think it is.

EV charge providers don’t have domestic rate price caps and have suffered on ROI. Put the tin foil hat down

I would say that gives a good enough charge in an hour if you're at gym or supermarket etc. 1 or 2 of those per week is all that most people would need. But yeah better to charge at home on drive of course.
But then it’s expensive. You will tend to charge the cheapest based on experience

Buying a car specifically because it has 22Kw charging seems baffling to me if you are going to charge at home.

I never need to charge elsewhere on 'slow' chargers, and for long road trips I want the fastest chargers going really.

even with only 7.4kw ac at home if you are with ovo you can have 8 hours to fully recharge at 10p/kwh.
megane looks nice for the low weight & low seat position from slim battery (point elbow - electric rear mirror though. )

22kw charging is only really useful in the very limited scenario that you need a quick(ish) charge, all the DC chargers are full/broken, and there is also for some reason a 22kw charger there (or if you have a ZE40)

Found a pub near me with 1x CCS charger, would prefer 2+ chargers really for less waiting/issues.

Using that as an example it's price is 75p per kWh so ~8000 miles per year, divided by miles per kW efficiently which is ~4-5 in an e-Niro apparently, 2000-1600 kW per year = £1500 - £1200. That's between the same as what I pay now and £300 more, per year, seems fine, until I get a place with a drive.

edit: There's a few sites between me and work as well with 2 and 3 chargers so should be fine in terms of having a place to charge.

There is no point getting an EV until you can benefit from cheap charging. 75p is far too much to rely on.

You might not get 4 in the winter either.
