Just been sucking some leaves on my lunch break and felt my back getting warm.. No matter.. Manual labour is tough?

No. My leaf blower was on Verge of fire with smoke pouring out.

So it's safe to say I need a new one. Suck and blow needed so almost certainly will be mains so don't need it to follow a system

I got one out of lidl I think, although it'll be hit and miss on availability.

As for catching fire, I can only assume you were vacuuming up wet leaves and that ended up clogging the motor? I only vacuum dry leaves and stuff, or use the blower to get it into a pile and then scoop up.

The leaves weren't wet but there were a lot of them. But likely yes the motor couldn't take it.

I had a quick look and only found cordless ones:

Personally I think it's easier, less faff and overall more efficient to go manual, and buy a pair of large aluminium leaf grabbers (long enough so you don't need to stoop down). Use a bin with bin liner so you can scoop them up and bag them straight away.

Here's a list of brand websites for garden power tools if you want to research further.

I’ve used one of these for the last year or so..

It’s been good as gold so far.

Pretty good price for a petrol!
I have a petrol mower so this is probably a better option. I absolutely hate the cord. Never really considered a petrol. Very heavy?

I don't mean the pure kg weight. More like.. Is it awkward /cumbersome?

It might be. I could drop down to a battery blower (basically for clearing up the scraps) and some sort of manual option. Especially if it avoids bending over. That's the pain with the rake

Edit:
Just had a look at these last grabbers. The do look better. We have a lot of leaves. I think a battery blower and a manual pick up might be the best solution.

What probably killed this one was the sheer amount of leaves. And that's never going to end.

Looks like petrol AIO vs battery blower plus manual pickup are the options.

Can’t say I find it cumbersome, but I do use it with the shoulder strap if clearing the whole garden.

I have such a pair of leaf grabbers and they are very effective.

The bags on the leaf vacs look quite small and it just looks like a lot of hassle emptying them and bagging leaves up again.

Was trying to see if it had a strap.

Will have a look.

Looks like I'll be doing the petrol vs the manual + blower option.

It is a bit.
We have a green wheelie bin for garden waste.

We have two huge oaks. So a lot leaves late in the season. One plus of the sucker is it mulches the leaves right up.
But the bag is a faff.

The one I posted does shred the leaves to 1/10th size, so you can fit a lot in the bag.
Or sometimes I’ll just blow them into pile and run the lawnmower over them, then lob the remains in the compost.

I'll have a look at my options. Thanks everyone.

I do like the grabber is better for the bugs

Do you have any use for compost?
If so a bulk bag, fill with leaves and compact, add a little water every so often.
They do break down faster chopped up but its not really necessary.

Technically you want to moulder leaves as opposed to compost them. (they cause a large chemical imbalance in compost, the end result is similar from mouldering but it affects the rest breaking down if you combine)
They break down quite quickly with that action and if you have large trees you have exactly what you need nearby! (a source of fungus)

Pick em up with your hands.

As MKW says above, excellent in compost, or I use mine as Leaf mulch down the allotment. By summer they are perfect.

yeah oddly hands here as well
I rake em up, bundle loads into those big rubber type bucket things, stand on them, add more etc until I have a fairly compacted bucket full
Take them to the allotment and create a pile in the corner of my greehouse. Cover with something to help keep the moisture in and rinse repeat.
Most will breakdown over 3-6 months and the few remains rot down quickly when you start adding a lot of water.
Some of the best "compost" you can get leaf mould

^^ this be environmentally sound and compost or green bin it so someone else does. Keeps you fit as well.

There are too many leaves to compost! The garden isn't that big!
