Lost Bitcoins Man is still trying

is this chap right enough in the head?! i know it must be devastating knowing he's lost it but surely this is just bonkers. what are the chances of finding the drive, let alone finding it in a sufficiently working condition - they gotta be slim as a slim thing on slim fast.

It's clearly become an all-consuming obsession. That's akin to a mental illness at this point.
 
LOL every time the price goes up this guy gets a new bit of news coverage.

I do feel bad for him, if investors are willing to take on the risk and pay for any search/ensure all costs are covered, insurance provided etc.. then they probably should let him and a team search, what's the issue for them? They stand to make a gain too IIRC.

On the other hand he hasn't really lost XXX million, if he hadn't thrown away the drives he'd have been very unlikely to have held for that long
 
Sounds like he should be suing his partner for £275m rather than the council, for all the good it'll do him.

I do kind of sympathise, but at the same time... just give it up man.

The issue is likely at least partly that having anyone digging through a tip is a massive undertaking and could result in a huge amount of disruption as it may require actually closing it fully to new rubbish for the duration of the search, and finding a suitable place to put the rubbish that has been shifted.

There is also the element of risk to those involved in any search because you'll at the very least have broken glass and sharp metals in with the rubbish, as well as all sorts of biological waste.

Then there is the fact they're looking for something that is small enough you're going to have to literally go through everything by hand (tens of thousands of tons at least), and even if you do find it you're going to have to try and get the data off it, and I'll bet that there will be a lot of hard drives in that tip as many people really aren't good about putting them in recycling*, so they won't be able to stop when they find one drive. They'll have to go through until they're well beyond the expected layer for the drive and pull out every one they find, and even then if they don't find the right one or they can't pull the data off all the drives they find the guy is likely to be back in a few years wanting them to do it again.

Basically it's going to be extremely expensive and massively disruptive with little chance they'll actually get anything usable, or do enough to satisfy the guy.



*Which reminds me I've got at least 3 old drives here I need to tip, but first I need to take the control boards off and open them up before I throw them in the small electricals (at least one of them was a documents drive that was failing).
 
I wonder if he's pursuing this tactic because he knows the chances of recovering anything are crazy low after all this time. The heat and pressure and water ingress and whatever else is acting on that drive is pretty sure to have rendered it useless by now, Shirley?

With old phones and hard drives I uses a 14lb sledgehammer :)

That's a risk for the investors and their money, I don't really see the issue, I'm not sure the council needs to stop using the landfill in order to permit this he's located the section he intends to search.
 
While I can understand that it probably nags at him day in day out losing something like that, what are the odds of finding it now with tonnes of other crap on top of it? It's a literal needle in a massive....very stinky haystack that's now been covered over.
