Fan oven - air doesn’t ’blow’ but fan is on

We’ve had this oven ever since we moved into the house (Beko KDC653W).

Nothing cooks evenly and more than 1 item/tray in the oven and it’s a nightmare.

It’s a fan oven, but there never feels like there a ‘draft/air movement’ when the fan turns on, you don’t get a ‘gust of heat’ blown at you when you open the oven - the oven does heat up.

Out of curiosity I held a piece of kitchen paper at the front of the oven (door open) and turned it on - the paper was ‘sucked’ into the oven slightly, rather than blown….?

Is this…normal?

The fan spins clockwise.

Look at the photos of the fan: Fan photos click here

Do you see how the blades have an additional piece/right angle on them? Well on those pictures that is facing the back of the oven, on my fan it looks like they’re facing into the oven…..?

Just took a quick video of the fan as it turns off, you can see the direction of the blades and the additional cutout thing I mentioned above…is it the wrong way round?

Edit: Omfg I think my fan is the wrong way round?

Edit2: https://imgur.com/a/fGBeUpB

I couldn’t turn it around if I wanted to, the thread/screw that the fan is fastened to is short and it wouldn’t fit if the fan was turned around

LOL this can’t be right

It's weird it would fit the oven "in reverse" at all, even if it is 3rd party. Spinning clockwise is correct I think, maybe sometime just got a blade but got the wrong one. How long has it been like that? I'd get on at your landlord/agent to see if they've got a record of it being replaced/repaired

yes - from video looks like it is spinning in the right/clockwise direction, to blow, and blade is shaped to achieve that
.... but you'd expect a vacuum/suck at the periphery of the back of oven as air gets taken in around plate.

It’s not been great since we moved in. Somebody came and replaced the heat element/thermometer around October time but there wasn’t a huge difference.

It’s absolutely blown my mind that this is what the issue has been, it just seems to illogical

maybe it sucks in air at the top part of the oven but flow it out somewhere else if the back of the cooker is sealed or something.
any air coming out the bottom of the oven?

could be some weird design so the hot air that rises doesnt get blown out?

Any chance that any vents on the back are gunked up?

I recently took our cooker apart to replace the oven element and surprised at how much greasy residue was deposited throughout the back of the cooker

Sounds like it could certainly explain the issues you're seeing.

you don’t get a ‘gust of heat’ blown at you when you open the oven - the oven does heat up.

Interestingly modern ovens don't do this anymore anyway. Our fan stops if you open the door. A) I guess partially for safety as a load of hot steam escaping can be dangerous, and b) it's incredibly inefficient to be chucking all that heat out the door.

Ahhh I just checked and there are 4 smallish slits in each corner at the back of the oven. These are blowing out the air, although nowhere near as strongly as the fan is sucking it in.

It was gunk free! Turns out there’s 4 slits at the back of the oven where it pushes air back out, just very very weak. Especially in comparison to the main suck of the fan

However much air is going in, is coming out. That's physics.

The thing is, fan ovens aren't designed to suck air in or blow it out. The fan pushes air around inside the oven to distribute heat so food cooks evenly. Fans create circulation in this case, not intake. Otherwise you'd be chucking all the heat away as Semple says.

First off that picture in first link isn't showing the impeller just the cooling part (yes it's a fan blade but I'm trying not to confuse anything) for the motor windings, the impeller will be in the cavity.

The picture/video you took is correctly installed.

How long do you preheat for?
