Interior Door fitting - price

I didn’t say expensive tools, I said good tools. There isn’t any point of attacking an oak door with a pound land chisel, it will not go well.

Likewise a decent drill and spade bits for drilling out the latches/locks and handles, again no cheap soft bits for hardwood.

I did use my 18V router on the recessed bits because frankly, it requires less skill and time to do it well. I wouldn’t have for the level of finish I did get doing it all by hand.

That said I’d say lifting bags are essential, especially if you are on your own.

I have to disagree with that m8
Pain in the bum in my experience, too easily marked and you still would need to paint the edges
I always hated fitting pre finished doors :(

Can’t get close to that seamless factory finish though.

I suppose if you do best to get the door posts done as well so they are fitted to the door and it’ll be lovely.

That’s opening up a completely new can of worms though!

Can't get close really I agree. Wooden doors are much easier to just just oil and get a factory finish at home.

That’s precisely why we bought oak doors as a replacement. Sod painting 9 doors from scratch at once. Oiling by comparison takes minutes and gives a more premium finish for a lower cost than pre finished painted doors and a far better finish than paining yourself, particularly if you have a satin paint.

So after spending hours trying to find a door that fits our frame, it seems impossible.
  • 5 of the 6 door frames are 1981 x 762mm which is fine.
  • The last door frame is 1981 x 726mm.
I am unable to find ANY door that is 726mm wide and 1981mm tall. All 726mm doors seem to be 2040mm tall. These are not suitable, as every listing says only up to 10mm can be taken of any side, and some are even less at 4mm or 6mm etc

I don't mind sourcing a door that is not exactly the same as the more standard doors. I'm struggling to even find any door, let alone one that is similiar in looks.

The doors I have ordered and had delivered are this style. But can I find one that is 726mm x 1981mm can I bugger.

 28.5 inches
Odd size that.27 or 30 inches was the standard when I was working.damn these new fangled metric sizes:D
One option is to reduce the door opening to take a 27 inch door.add a door lining jamb to one side and recut the architrave, have to patch a few pieces of skirting too

My house is an old 1930s build. I think the frame maybe a custom size due to the position, as its the max width posssible due to the stairs/hall layout.

See here: and trhis is why its more narrow that the rest of the door frames.

this weekend I'm sanding all the frames down and starting work on the painting after having the walls replastered etc.

You could quite easily chop that door down more than the stated amount, you just need to take a bit more care/use a track saw.

Personally it would trigger me if my doors were not all the same.

I'd either make the frame slightly smaller and fit the smaller door or attempt to cut down a bigger door and HOPE they have put enough wood in it.

Well I have the extra door, as I ordered it anyway, so worth trying I guess. Bin the door worst case scenario.

Just buy the 726x 2040 door.. Yes you will likely cut the lipping/ expose the grain on top and bottom, but unlike the sides when trimmed that won't be seen.

Fyi climadoor supply doors with 20mm lippings thats where I got mine from.

I paid 75+vat per door and got about 14 doors changed in my place.
