Patio Prices

Based in the SE and had a quote for Indian sand stone for a similar rate but no digging required as it was a replacement and had already been prepped and that was about 4k, prices will defo differ based on area of the country too. But the 5k prices sounds safer then the 2k job that probably be as well done it finished at all for that price
Watch those Indian stones, many are soft porous and quite poor stone.

Thread bump, I've just had a quote and need to sense check. Initially it felt very expensive but looking online and breaking it down it does seem fine in the end? It's being done by the grounds team who did the foundations for our extension so they've already been on site and we're happy with the quality of work.

100m2 of porcelain slabs (supply and fit)
Foundations and retaining walls for steps and 1 side of the garden
Fit channel drains along the new extension
Concrete base for a shed (8x6ft)
About 5m of sleepers
Remove about 15 tree stumps, bring up to flat level, rotavate garden (roughly 30sqm), supply 20 tonnes of topsoil, lay new turf

£17.5k+VAT

Based on £100sqm for the slabs, plus £40sqm for ground prep that's £14k, then all the other garden bits, sleepers and the shed base it feels okay now thinking about it.

Slabs are £25sqm as we've picked them, based in the SE so an expensive area.

They said it would take about 3 weeks and there are 3 of them, so that's why the costs initially seemed high - I was thinking £1k each a week would be £9k, plus materials at about £4k but looking at the price per sqm and the overall work it now seems okay?

That is actually incredibly good value for money based on quotes ive had recently. We are north west and im being quoted 10 to 15k+ for:

21m2 of porcelain (im to supply)
foundations and retaining walls
remove 4 tree stumps
level out and turf 200m2

It feels hard to compare as you've got 200m2 (!!) of levelling out and turf to do.

Have the top 2 items on your quote been itemised at all?

Always work on the broad assumption of

A Third is materials / third is labour / third is profit....

That's a ballpark idea - so if the slabs are say £5k to buy on their own - and the job is quoted at £15k or around there - it's ballpark numbers but sensible.

Anything massively either side of it is cowboy stuff or don't want the job but will stick a massively high price on it.

To throw in a comparisen if it helps.
We have just had (Still ongoing)

Patio (300x300 slabs @ £10.30 each) 145 slabs used
Lay 6 old 600x750 slabs in corner as kids play house base
70Sqm Turf
Entire garden risen by 10-15cm on a slope. Half sharp sand, half top soil.
Entire turf area against fences (3 out of the 4 edges) bordered with a Sleeper on its side (to keep new soil and sand in place etc)

We opted to use a one man band, who brings in a chap to help when needed.

So far we have spent (Estimated... as I forget)
Slabs £1500
12 Bags of Top soil £870
15 bags of sharp sand £900
5 Bags MOT Stone £325
8 tubs easy joint £280 - (I'm doing this)
Cement bags £200
18 sleepers £540
Turf £300

Labour £2500 (So far) 3 days left and I pay per week.

Total should be.... £7800 approx

Sounds like a lot, however, the garden was useless and now its practically a dream.

Curse the developer who just chucked 1" top soil ontop of clay in the garden!

Edit: A bonus for me, is that I miscalculated the Sqm... and ordered 80sqm of turf.
Which is a pain, apart from i have a poor quality front lawn and no lawn around the side of the house. So quick trip to wicks and a day outside at the weekend, and now i have fresh turf all around teh house hah

I keep driving past some new builds as they are being built.

The gardens are literally concrete with about 4inches of topsoil on them, no drainage at all in the concrete :S

Ironically they are being built on what used to be a grass field

It's an insult to actual gardens to call those sterile boxes on newbuilds gardens..

yea they are basically very shallow planters.... anything decent the owners will be forced to grow in containers and pots....

Maybe the new build housing is built on a massive flat section of concrete to prevent it from sinking, it's the only thing that makes sense surely? how crap are the foundations I wonder.

There's no way they would concrete over the garden and then add topsoil just for the sake of it.

It's saving them money somehow

Steady,,, They aint all sterile boxes. I've tried to bring some kind of wildness back to at least a small section (about 10m²):
