I bought a gaming pc from OCUK because of this forum

It's been a while since I put together a new PC, but JFC - how long has £2000 been considered a good price for a mid-level setup?
Hardware prices have been going through the roof the past few years, plus there's always been a premium when getting someone else to build it for you.

Gone are the days where you can build your own decent set up for £1k :(

Yeah motherboards have doubled in price. Don't ask about GPUs they're the worst effected

I've not built a PC (for myself, have for family and friends) since 2017. Getting really itchy fingers now! 2025 looks to be the year.

Nothing with the pins in the socket yet, so I'll get to live that first time "will I bend the pins" anxiety when installing the CPU.

I built one PC. That was enough for me.

It's better leaving it to the experts, especially when it comes to overclocking.

What struggles did you come across that put you off building again?

While CPU overclocking is largely redundant now, I took it upon myself to delve into overclocking RAM. It took a few weeks of testing with various utilities (and buying some B Die at silly prices during covid as crucial stuff didn't cut it) but I did achieve 3733MT/C14. Not sure I'll bother doing it when I upgrade to AM5...at least not initially!

I remember my first build from here. Was about £1K ish IIRC.

The damn thing would not boot with both rams installed, but would boot with one without issues. It was a newly released motherboard , I found a a dodgy BIOS on some site and that fixed it until the stable release. Fun times.

I've moved to laptops, but I miss how good it was and lasted me a long time.

erm.. yeah , on point....Enjoy OP.

I've been out of the custom PC building space for nearly two decades. Intel P35 chipset and the Conroe (sp?) CPUs were the pairings at the time. I don't keep an eye on prices but I assumed things had gone crazy considering the nVidia GPU memes I see around.

I used to love building back in the day, especially with interesting boards like the DFI RD600 based board. I think that was the first chipset that could run asynchronous memory and chip FSB without a performance hit? I could have swore someone released a white and red motherboard based on the RD600, or might have been the reference board.
