Fair enough, the issue is will AMD then lock out 9070 cards when they release UDNA and probably FSR 5 using dedicated cores on the unified new architecture? Then will be in a similar situation of being stuck with a worse upscale like I am now with FSR 3 and 7800XT.

I would worry about that when UDNA is here - which wont be till end of 2026 or early 2027!

Correct. I am still perplexed by the ray tracers disgruntled about the 40% gen improvement in this space too...

And I really like the look of the MBA 9070xt another worry is if it's power starved too much and AIB sees good increase in performance

The mba is a clear winner in looks for me having gone the mba route with my current card. They’re not as nice as Nvidia FE but they are still pretty lovely to the eye (also argb LED Radeon logo now!) versus AIB offerings.

Personal preference but I think the MBA 9070xt look's better than FE especially vertically mounted with the Radeon name lit up

Agreed. The saving grace for the 5000 series is the RT uplift, which looks to be about 35%. Both AMD and Nvidia have devoted even more silicone to the RT hardware. So expect a 35% - 40% uplift in RT performance across the stack. Of all you care about is raster then it’s not as rosy of course.

With FSR 4 improvements we will have even less sticks to beat AMD with. That won’t stop some here and in the tech media still having a go about “features” though I bet.

I’m just happy to see both Nvidia and AMD make improvements that are tangible and at least some movement on lower prices at the mai stream levels.
 
I do think it's interesting that the tiny sliver of 5000 series performance we've seen has all been with Ray tracing enabled. If there is a big uplift in relative rt performance over 4000 series, then non rt performance uplift could be smaller than what we've seen suggests.

I’ve seen some speculative articles and videos that suggest sub 20% raster improvements at best. Nvidia have upped the RT cores and to be fair that’s probably sensible given the direction games are moving towards more RT.

It looks like AMD have done the same with RDNA 4. More RT silicone at the expense of pure raster.

Let’s wait for reviews from both before we get too excited/dejected :)

If you rarely play games you wont notice - no. :) did you not get tempted by the 4070ti?

Either 9070xt or 5070ti would be a huge gain to be fair. I am in a similar boat with only a 20% stronger card than you of same gen.

I was in a discussion elsewhere on the 9070XT where I was pretty much advise dthat the 9070XT would be a sidestep RT performance wise so wouldn't be a logiucal move (From the leaks we have seen)
I've yet to use the RT performanc eon the 3080 as it is. I think I tried for an hour in Cyberpunk many moons ago but that was the only time I have tried it. I'm just generally looking for +50% or more improvements in ratser than the 3080 so perhaps this won't be for me in the end and maybe I just sit out this round of GPU's and see what the next generation RTX 6000 or AMD whatever brings.

Its not just the RT aspect though the raster boost from a 3080 > 4080 is 50%+ so if you look at the nvidia sponsored titles its still around 25% better in the RT end of it.

To put it bluntly though anything below £700 in recent past has not really improved tremendously. If you genuinely want to be impressed and actually use the RT stuff your looking at 5070Ti+ or a 4080+ to start seeing that.

Absolutely. It is an impressive uplift from what they had previously.
I've no real use for RT at present or for the foreseeable future to be honest. Pure raster is generally what I aim for. If that were to change I would re-evaluate my options I suppose.
That said, I'm not really experiencing issues with games that I play so likely no upgrade needed other than my system hasn't been fiddled with in some time.
 
Its likely not a product for you then, which is similar for me. I am interested in the new Blackwell cards as the Ada ones were originally eye watering in price and the Super refreshes have now been replaced.
