OcUK Dadsnet thread

Depends what your kids want to do :p.

With #1 we currently have 6 hours of gymnastics, 6 hours of swim club, and 4 hours of diving club. He's not far off getting moved to the next squad in diving, at which point it will be one trip a month to Southend (eugh) for the 10m board. And he's only 8!

I mean, at some point this is your fault :p

Never let your kids get into any sport that involves:

- Getting up at 5am for training
- Driving all across the country to compete
- Sitting in a venue for 5 hours to watch your kid compete for 5 minutes.

Its all entirely our fault :p.

He's very good at them thats the problem, wins competitions and such.

There's some self-levelling that goes on there because at some stage they'll either be weeded out or it's likely going to be their career. The second is worse for your morning routine.

my lad recently hit 9. valentine's day today and has gone into school with a card and a little bag with a small teddy and a chocolate rose.

he was so nervous. I hope he gets something back or he will be crushed. I hated valentine's day as a kid. obviously getting heart broken is something we all go through but I am hoping he is a little older before he has to go through it so he can understand it a bit better.

also it's something I would rather put off going through it with him!.

am sure at 9 at my school we didn't do valentine's stuff however

Oh yeah we dont expect him to become an olympic athlete, though naturally thats what he wants :p.

We're just hoping that all the hard work will have the knock on effect of keeping him (very) fit and healthy through his teenage years into adulthood and give him a bit of the hard work ethic type scenario whereby he's fit and healthy as well.

Just don't let him see girls or go to Uni and he will be fine :)

God there was nothing worse than valentine's day at school, we didn't really have it until we hit secondary if I recall.

Dreading it for my little one as she grows up.

At school it's just a day of who the most popular etc, horrendous.

My boys school elected to have an inset day, smart plan.

He's just turned 13, but I don't think he's too concerned about this stuff just yet. Hope he does better than I did though!

Out boy (nearly 3) has suspected scarlet fever. Started complaining about his cheek hurting, today he has the tell tale rash. Did an e-consult this morning (as phones are always busy), they replied (via a no-reply email) and said go to a pharmacy. Went to the pharmacy, they said yup scarlet fever but need a prescription. Went to the GP in person, they said no appointments, ring 111. Rang 111, they said ring the local health centre. Rang them, they said we're not registered, ring 111. Rang 111, went through the same process and apparently some paediatric centre is ringing us back. This has been going on all bloody day. By the time we get him something it'll be too late to be able to take him to nursery due to the exclusion period. If only doctor receptionist this morning would have just given us an appointment with a GP.

My boss was saying how glad he was his daughter's all grown up now and at uni, she was a swimmer and he does not miss it

At 9 girls were still smelly and icky and had the lurgy (not sure it's really changed ha ha)

Kids these days grow up a bit too fast imo.

My boy is 7 and valentine's day has far too much emphasis at school.

Swimming, as far as I can tell is the worst of the lot. Utterly boring as well. No flair. Either your race is over very quickly or its dull as hell for most of it.

Yeah that's what boss said.

My boy does football and that's pain enough especially as muggins here got roped into being a coach. Which tbh is enjoyable with the kids, but I really don't like it when you come across teams where the manager thinks he's the next Alex Ferguson and the parents are truly awful shouting and swearing at the kids... Oh and the parents that think their kids the next Jude Bellingham... Honestly I just wanna rock up and have some fun. It's not even competitive football yet either and I'm told it's only going to get worse as they get older.

It takes up the weekend aswell, usually a couple of hours on Saturday and Sunday, even worse when it's an afternoon game.

An hour or 2 in the week aswell.

Get him over to rugby, much nicer, got roped into coaching that, been doing it 6 years now, and love it.

Today I learned of something called a Parent's Kiss, anyone ever had to use it? My 3 year old daughter stuck a small sequin up her nose tonight, after inspecting I realised it was too deep for me to remove the item safely. Very almost ready to head to A&E when by chance I came across this method online. Shot straight out on first attempt and I was very relieved.

Not one I've heard of but definitely something I'll probably need to use at some point so thank you!

Having mild success with sleep training our nearly 6 month old. Morning naps seems fine but night time sleep is rocky at best. Usually goes down from 7-12am ISH then we're getting wake ups again maybe 2, 3.30 and 5ish. Finding it hard to resettle without a feed.

When we started sleep training she had some of her longest sleeps at night and we thought we'd turned a corner but it's all gone south since then.

Anyone any advice?
