*** The AMD RDNA 4 Rumour Mill ***

Are you really blaming AMD for unprecedented demand, scalpers and a worldwide launch? OcUK alone said they had thousands, it sounds to me like there were huge numbers UK/Europe/Worldwide, just not enough to meet the unprecedented demand.

Thing is look at how much stock ocuk had, times that by the other big 3 competitors in the UK, then think how many globally, that's a lot of GPU and significantly more than Nvidia, think I see gobbo said only had a few hundred Nvidia cards, and less than 10 5090's at launch.

AMD have not ballsed up, just the world wants GPU's,

Why are you talking like they're wasn't thousands of cards at just a single uk store? If amd didn't have a large number of cards ocuk wouldn't have been able to get thousands, they would have had substantially less as there would be less to go around.

The fact they had so many indicates that there was a lot to go around and it still wasn't enough. Probably due to people seeing the reviews of the joke 5070 and changing their minds and wanting one of these.

But AMD were talking about marketshare, do they really think they're going to gain much marketshare with a few thousand cards?
All those people looking to make the switch after the Nvidia stock shortages are faced with... AMD stock shortages...

People want graphics cards, you could tell that looking at this forum and forums like this one. Now a good number of people probably wanted Nvidia graphics cards, but they couldn't get them so they'll make do with what they can get. Think how many sales AMD could've got if they'd used the 2+ months delay to actually get stock to retailers.

AMD are going to try to get more stock shipped? Didn't Nvidia say the same thing?
I think at this point a lot of people will buy whatever they can get first. That could've been AMD. It might still be AMD, but the door is now open for Nvidia again.

In fairness all the stock in the world wouldn't stop all the UK PC retailers website from going down under the load of a few thousand users. I can't help but think that sites like the BBC, Google and some big online American retailers would take this sort of traffic in their stride. They'd get that many visitors and just go "Ah, it's a Thursday". And yes, they're much bigger companies with far more resources, but they didn't start out huge and being able to handle that capacity may have helped them get bigger.

(Also, remember a lot of us are frustrated and talking out of frustration and disappointment)

There is a finite amount of production on advanced nodes, a finite amount of wafers, with more companies than AMD fighting for those wafers. There is a physical limitation on how many dies can be made on the wafers, minus defects and obviously cut offs at the edge. They can't just made infinite cards in 2 months.

Plus a few thousand cards for OcUK allegedly alone. How is that a few thousand cards worldwide?

I understand the frustration, but that doesn't make it ok to just say random things. I am more concerned that they keep stock coming over the next few months. Keep flooding the market, keep prices lower.

It sounded like they had hundreds of pulses...
1000 Pulses said so. 300 supposed to sell on rebate price. The rest (post January shipments) not already fixed? I thought 3 months delay on launch was to correct pricing and rebates for premature priced January stock. Seems like either AMD changed tactics and go for rdna2-like approach or prices were even supposed to go higher?

so i got a nitro preorder in at around 4.30pm after 2 hours of stress, bloody gpu sales these days are a nightmare. My question is wth does preorder mean and how long is the wait? i can see its still up for preorder now, the page says eta 1-3 days for stock, is that accurate or are there now thousands of preorders? @Gibbo

This is all an effect of the whole world producing all the advanced chips in literally just one factory on Taiwan. Till that changes, there will always be shortages of said chips - be it GPUs, CPUs and other. There's no way around it aside huge investment and building more factories all over the world. That won't happen anytime soon, so this is just a case of "that's life, get used to it" for everyone, it seems. Laptops will be hit same way, I am sure (that's been the case for a while now). On the other hand, consoles like Nintendo Switch 2 will likely be available in huge numbers, as they use older process.

You don't think they could've made more if they'd wanted to? Also, how many is "a few"? It's an imprecise measurement so can you say it wasn't "a few thousand"?
Bet they had a steady supply of AI stuff being produced, bet they do a better job at meeting demand for that stuff.
We all know selling out keeps the prices high. So it's just greed, which is bad when Nvidia do it, not sure why AMD get a pass.

Ekhm, unprecedented demand? :) This isn't anything new, happens for few generations now, every single time I read same complaints here since pandemic.

Hot take that I am prepared to take flak for...

/me dons flamejacket

I would actually be ok with retailers forcing most of their early stock into bundles with CPU/Mobo/RAM/etc., because it would:
  • Reduce the impact of scalpers, because they:
    • Would need to spend 2-3x more per card they acquire
    • Have the added hassle of having to resell items with lower demand (slows down ROI as well)
    • Could be hit with a high restocking penalty if they return only part of the bundle
  • Get cards into the hands of people that really need them:
    • First time PC builders
    • People upgrading from really old systems
  • Make demand more manageablefor retailers
    • Less website crashing, queue systems etc.
I await your rage-filled responses :D

would have been perfect for me! Exactly what I am looking to do since I upgrade once every 5yrs or so

I feel like some sort of simple code system within the forum's private areas would also work, although specifics would obviously need to be worked out.

The demand has been enormous for these cards, AMD does not usually deal with this kind of demand. They had more stock at launch and still wasn't enough.

The nitro 9700XT were all preorders. I have one. When I spoke to CS they said the are due tomorrow, @Gibbo also said they have 500 arriving tomorrow and 500 next week so you should be golden. I have upgraded my delivery to Sat as I want it asap :-)
