New AdBlocker Recommendations

Out of curiosity, why did chrome removed Ublock Origin?
The cynical view is because Google don't like adblockers, but obviously the Lite version has been around for months and unaffected.

Officially I believe it's to do with Google deprecating all Manifest V2 plugins, and I guess it was easier to develop a new plugin on V3 than to update uBlock origin. Apparently people who code adblockers were having discussions with Google about how to modify V3 to better support adblockers, so if that is true then it doesn't seem so much like they're clamping down on adblockers... and apparently the Lite version also doesn't need so many permissions to achieve similar ends.

I'm Ok now with my PC and laptop. However my wife has now the same problem on a Chromebook. Can I ask whether I can install a third party Adblocker on her CB, is it taboo on OC forums to ask and/or can someone point me to where I can find out, thanks.
EDIT: I hadn't realised that I installed uBO when she bought it 3 years ago. I have therefor installed Lite to it also. TBH I never touch her laptop as CB are alien to me.

I gave Adblock for youtube and chrome a try, and its worked excellent and still does a similar if not same job as Ublock origin which no longer works on chrome.

While using Youtube i've certainly noticed the Lite extension doesn't seem to block as many ads as the previous version.

Realised i've had it on the "Basic" setting so far, trying "Optimal" to see if that helps more.

PiHole doesn't block ads in video's like YT or various adult sites, and I use 3 of the most popular adlists...

None of the DNS based apps or services can block YouTube or other sites where ads are served from the same domains as the content. It's their big limitation unfortunately.

I had a pretty good demonstration of how potentially vulnerable the average user is without an adblocker; Chrome removed Ublock Origin on my Nan's PC the other week, and within a couple of days she encountered a fullscreen browser hijack designed to look like a Windows desktop with error messages, a log-on prompt and a telephone number to call to resolve the problem. Fortunately she phoned my Mum instead who contacted me and I was able to take control via Quick Assist, remove it, and install Ublock Lite. Just goes to show how easy it is though; she doesn't go on dodgy websites (other than the Daily Mail...) or tend to click dodgy links but something got through.

I switched from UBlock Origin to a lifetime licence of Adguard - glad to say YouTube is still totally AD free. The only ADs I've seen so far have been those intensely annoying embedded ones on some Facebook videos but even the mighty UBlock didn't stop those
Tell me more about this Adguard, do you get no ads on youtube at all? I use adblock plus and while effective, it's still really annoying as I constantly have to replay a video on youtube for it to kick in.

Ublock Origin Lite, is as the name suggests, not as feature packed as the original Ublock Origin.

The only browser to still support Ublock Origin fully is Firefox, and one of many reasons I use it instead of Google's Adware Chrome borwser.

Google removed the ability for extensions to control the output of the page, so adblockers lost the ability to target many elements and be as dynamic in their blocking. The extensions now just act like blocklist updaters and they serve the browser engine a limited list of the resources they'd like blocked.

Google did this for one reason and one reason only, to protect their ad revenue. They got rid of their don't be evil motto and have infected almost every browser with the engine they control for the betterment of their ad revenue.

There is a reason they are being investigated for needing to sell off Chrome.

I don't use it since I prefer uBo but Adguard is definitely up there as one of the best blockers. ABP has fallen years ago ever since they started whitelisting certain ads.

Adguard can also block ads and trackers etc system wide, which makes it extremely useful.

Well worth a go, especially when you can sometimes get the lifetime family version for not much more than a tenner.

Maybe not an option with the new terms of service that they have just added\applied!
A totasl non issue overblown via online communities which misinformed the uninformed and was later clarified by Mozilla/other outlet. Simply disable the option in settings, job done.

Not quite, Edge still has uBlock Origin, who knows if it will continue to do so but, for me, it works as I want so I'll stick with Edge for now. It still does a fine job of blocking YouTube and 99% of other ads.

That's more due to mv2 APIs still being present in Chromium, Google for now is only disabling extensions using it in Chrome (although I also saw it happening with my Vivaldi install last week). Edge/Brave/etc can keep them enabled but once Google properly removes mv2 from Chromium it'll be harder for them to maintain it.

Absolutely - just depends whether MS use it as an opportunity to branch off from Google and keep them and thus try and get more market share or whether it follows Googles lead.

Either way there will be clever people out there that will, eventually, develop something.

I got the same message in Chrome saying uBO isn't supported any more. But I just went into the Extension Manager screen and turned it back on. Seems to still work fine, but maybe that's just temporary?

Good to have the other options suggested here though.
