Assassins Creed Shadows - AC finally (at last) heads to Japan

To be clear im not saying I hate the game or the premise, in fact I was excited when they announced they were going to do a samurai based AC.

Im saying I hate that theyve crapped all over Japanese heritage which given the setting of the game, is enough to totally put me off it

I guess what I wanted, no, hoped for was crouching tiger hidden dragon the video game. Maybe im just old fashioned and stuck in my ways.
Play ghosts of Tsushima instead. You’ll enjoy it more.

This is the worse thing to happen to Asia since Genghis Khan
Probably the worst thing since what happened in Nanjing, but that was the Japanese so... best not mention it.

Best not mention the river kwai, unit 731 etc either.

Japan should quiet down about a slightly disrespectful video game tbh with some of the things they have done to the world..

For as much as I criticise the game, I'm nit picking it's pretty good probably a 7.5

I genuinely used to like his reviews but honestly now anytime he doesn't get a 'press key' it seems to always be a negative review.

AC at least for the last 4-5 games is a formula, some like it some don't but considering he dismisses user steam reviews as just 'opinions' I don't have that much faith in him anymore. He is one of the ragebait Youtubers whose channel pretty much relies on generating hate for wokeness or things that most young gamers don't care about. I mean most reviews I have seen state that it is an AC game as people are used to. It is less buggy than expected, runs decently and if you like the setting and AC games you will probably enjoy. But for him it's 'rubbish'. He has become a bit too predictable over the last couple of years as AAA developers don't send him keys ahead of time.

AC 1 was one of the only single player games I ever completed btw. And it was very repetitive towards the end :D

I've taken so many screenshots playing this game, something I only ever usually do in Helldivers 2 or end game leaderboards in The Finals - this really is a stunning game.

Had a slight bug earlier where something I had to do wouldn't trigger the event, was worried I'd need to revert to an earlier save but seemed to fix itself by a restart which was great. Also tempted to bump stealth up to expert as apparently that makes the guards actively check roof tops - although it's great on normal with their line of sight now including things above them.

The Japanese PR department needs to be studied because how they've convinced the world that they're supposed to be on a a pedestal (or is it just the weebs that put them there?) is majorly impressive!

I'm not against using reviews to form a basis for whether you buy a game or not, I'm against using reviews to form their entire opinion and then sharing that in a thread dedicated to the game.
On the one hand, those who rely upon single/trusted-source information to form their opinions for them deserve what they get, if only because so many other sources are within the same reach.
On the other - Humanity is unique in both its capacity to learn from the experiences of others, and also its apparent disinclination to do so.... :D

I don't go into the Star Citizen thread and start talking about it because I watched a video on YouTube telling me the game is awful.
You don't have to - It *is* awful!!! :D

Just thought I'd share our Assassin's Creed Shadows competition we've just launched for anyone who's interested in winning a PC copy
At that price, it's worth playing!!

It does feel a bit low budget and 'tech-demo', but it was also the first venture into a new kind of game, so I can forgive a lot... especially as they got so much better with the Ezio games afterward.

Again, if this had been the first game then maybe it would have seemed better, but since it follows several other games that proved they can do a pretty decent storyline with far better grounding in reality (and even real history/historical fiction), this was more like Police Academy IIXXX - The last of a long-dead franchise that only three die-hard fans still watch, where the story is barely even phoned in by actors and writers whose careers have long-since given up on them...

Wasn't AC1 based on Prince of Persia though? I suppose the open world and parkour were all new. But even if it was new, if you compare it to Uncharted 1 at the time for example, it was night and day

Never played either of those, so I'm probably more of the target audience anyway.
Either way, it set the stage for a string of decent games, followed by another string that was (mostly) far from decent, with this latest one looking very unappealing.

I really like it, having not played any AC apart from AC Unity. It's the best ninja game of all time imo, the grappling hook physics being the main highlight for me - way better than Sekiro, Tsushima or Rise of Ronin. So cool! My main gripe is the signature AC switch blade for stealth kills, GoT and Ronin use their knives/tantos and not as lazy animation wise. I also wish Naoe could switch fighting stances, and for enemies not to be as tanky, especially the unarmored ones. 8/10 so far
Upgrading my score to 9/10 :) This is a different game to Tsushima and Rise of Ronin. Those were mostly combat, this is mostly stealth and ninjas. Although combat is satisfying as well, with good choice of weapons - katana, tanto, kusarigama. I've not even touched Yasuke apart from the intro, just played a few hours with Naoe. The game looks gorgeous on my 5090, night + rain = chef's kiss :)
My take on recent Samurai games:
1. Sekiro - the best combat, atmoshpere and setting - 10/10
2. Tied among Tsushima, AC:S - 9/10
3. Rise of Ronin, Like a Dragon:Ishin - 8/10

LAD:Ishin has the best story, characters and acting by very-very far; Tsushima has accessible combat that is quite nice but not much depth, AC:Shadows is a gorgeous accessible ninja simulator (parkour never felt more at home, shares all of GoT flaws -acting, story, shallow'ish), Rise of Ronin has the most complex combat and the highest difficulty but very little else.

PS Ninja Gaiden 2: Black 2025 is up there with Sekiro, beating it in combat depth and replayability wise, but falling short in atmosphere and setting
