EV general discussion

I actually once unplugged and forgot to close my charge point in the first month driving the EV. Not sure why! I've never left a fuel door open on an ICE car. I noticed as soon as I drove round the corner though as it's pretty obvious in the side mirror! I'm a little surprised they don't warn you about it honestly. The ID.7 has a manual door, but it could still have a sensor for checking it's closed.
Same on my car! I've done it a few times now. :o

Not sure why either, never forgot on my diesel! I think it's because we don't have the screw cap bit to do or for me, I'm more concerned about wrapping the tethered cable neatly back at work that I drive off and leave it open.

Thankfully, my car lets me know it's open as well! :D

Maybe it's also because my charge port is on the passenger side and not the drivers, so I don't see it as I'm getting in.

I don't normally look in here as I have no interest in EVs, but glad I did to see your true colours.

As for dishing out incorrect advice, the irony is strong given that you apparently can't help but evangelise about EVs even when the OP of another thread specifically said he wanted a petrol car.

I suggest you both put each other on ignore so that the rest of us don't have to put up with the bickering, and that you take a hint when people state they do not want an EV

And I suggest you put your bias to one side, since I didn't offer the poster and further comment after the initial rejection and clarification, I mean you can go back and check if you like, and other defending myself from being attacked for no reason.

So please oh wise one show me where after this person said he didn't want one that I continued with this.... oh wait you can't 'cause I didn't.

You said it it your self you have no interest in EV so have a bias, perhaps let the conversation play out and maybe people will have the correct information. Also JP corrected his mistake after I pointed out... hmmm

Feel free ot apologise when ever you like.

If this helps, I have an EV and have owned EV's for 6 years and I'm telling you and @jpaul to put each other on ignore so that we don't have to put up with your petty bickering. You can do as requested or we'll find other ways of preventing you from replying to each other on these topics and derailing threads.

Apologies but it seems that trying to get the correct data/information to people on a publicly viewable forum is bickering, then I have no idea what to suggest. However I get it, do it or I get cyberbullied into doing it, cheers for the support it is really appreciated. I have never felt so personally attacked from people 'moderating' but ho hum. End of discussion from me no point in bothering.

I left the fuel flap open on my old ice cars a few times. no Biggie (thankfully I never left the cap off!) I never got a warning on it.

OTOH the charging flap which I have also not closed properly a couple of times does have a warning on my car.
either way however I am not sure it will do any harm

I have never tried it but my fear is one day driving off with the charge cable plugged in. I have not tried it but I hope the car refuses to drive in that case.

I can't even start my Astra PHEV with the cable plugged in and that has software that was designed as a work experience project by a 15 year old who scored a placement at Stellantis.

On that basis I'm sure your car won't let you drag the cable along with you :p

This afternoon on the way in to work I closed what must've been the 6th charging port in the last few months on a car stuck in traffic. Each time the driver thanked me but it does make me think. Clearly when folks are unplugging their cars they're looking at their apps on their phone or whatever which results in the charging port being left open. This afternoon's was a BMW i7 and the thing stuck out a foot or so, just waiting to be kicked / bumped off.

I don't recall seeing this happen many times with ICE cars, is it perhaps an idea for the manufacturers to add a sensor and a warning? Whilst I'm sure it won't do much damage, forgetting it in the rain could accelerate some issues.

Both my Niro and Zoe have warned me when the port is open - and yeah, I have forgotten to do so a couple of times

My Leaf won't even let me turn the car on if the charging cable is still plugged in. Back when I first got it I didn't close the charging flap properly and once I got up to speed the damn thing shot open like a air brake and a very annoying light started blinking on the dash. I pulled over as early as it was safe to do so and shut it but I didn't half feel like a tool driving along with it open!!

I can see how it would happen as there is a bit more 'cognitive load' at a public charger than a fuel pump.

A car as expensive as an i7 doesn't have a motorised charge port door? or is it an optional extra?

Funnily enough, the i7 has actual motorised doors that open and close themselves. :p

Tried one for a couple of days but it’s just too big and parking will always be a pain. :(

So I'm 2 weeks into my Polestar 4 LRDM ownership experience and so far its been very positive. The day to day performance is very good, smooth, quick and very very quiet but it has a massive turn of speed when you push it. Efficiency is improving and the range is now north of 300 miles on full charge and is going up as the temperature increases and is significantly better than the iPace in equivalent conditions.

Interior quality is great, seats are comfortable and the sound system whilst not quite up with the Meridian system isn't far off. The rear view mirror (screen) took a couple of days to get accustomed too, but now isn't something I even think about and the other cameras make parking easy, even if it is wide like the iPace. I've had a software update which has dealt with some of the oddities that are in there and also the digital key was released yesterday which works great.

Overall I'm really pleased with it and whilst sorry to see the iPace go am happy with the replacement.

I had a scare with mine last week when backing out of a space. The car obviously thought there was something behind me and slammed the brakes on. There wasn't but it made me think I had hit something!

Testing out some of the smaller EVs as the company I work for has finally decided to offer the salary sacrifice thing, yes probably a bit late as it’s not as good as It was and car prices on these things struggle to be good as it seems like companies are buffing the numbers but as I don’t have a car ( I have use of many but not my own despite having bought all the cars  ) thought I might use it. Always liked a smaller car, for the past 20 years I don’t think my personal use motors have been much more than 4m or over 1100kg, so EVs are a challenge for me as they are all massive tanks like my family cars.(well modern cars in general)

Drove the Abarth 600e 240bhp today, not too bad, a little bland looking, needs more stickers like my old Abarth (will I ever grow up…. :D ) suffers from the usual low end EV problems, rough interior plastics etc, but it was a reasonably chuckable thing, you need some strong arms for the EV FWD torque steer/scrabble nonsense, but I don’t mind that so much reminds me of the old hatches I used to hoon around in, part of the charm so long as the front end doesn’t hop off the road it’s all good. :D It’s a nice enough car, quite basic, I felt the 500e was better inside in some ways, good use of alcantara to hide cheap plastics there but the 600e is a much more usable car. its main blight is road noise at motorway speeds, much better experience past 60 than the 500, now flys to over 100mph on my private test track, not fair off the performance of hot hatches of old before they all went silly power and 4WD etc. body control at speed over lumpy bumpy stuff not the best, the suspension struggling with the weight but for most driving it’d be fine.

It was a Stellantis dealership so got to have a poke around the Alfa Junior, whose rear always looked challenging to me in photos so wasn’t even a consideration, in the metal though I didn’t mind it and thought it looked like a decent car, it was the Veloce 280bhp, dealer gave me the keys and took that for a drive, mad how two fundamentally similar cars can feel so different, the Alfa much more grown up, despite more power much more controlled front end (Still need good arm strength :) ) a bit more comfortable, though I have to say the less sorted, lower power Abarth felt more fun, the Veloce also did the trick of the alcantara on some of the hard plastics so felt better too, I liked it a lot (I have had a few Alfa so perhaps my Alfa bias coming through ) Shame this is in the ECS bracket now, makes it a fair bump over the Abarth 600e 280 or a A290GTS

Nice that these cars had buttons for the core things I want to touch on the wheel and in the dash and quick shortcuts for safety disablement.

At one moment I wondered if the car had been fitted with a engine, such was the NVH from what I can only guess are the cooling fans after a hammering :D it's only 17C outside that can't be a good sign for hard summer use?

Next to try for me will be born VZ and A290GTS, need to get a wiggle on I’ve got a couple of months before my daughter wants her Up back, its fair to say jumping back into the Up GTI it did not make me sad despite all it loose to these new things with its measly 115bhp washing machine motor and manual box it felt a lot more interactive and you notice that 500 less kgs.

Not sure about the A290GTS, I tried a normal R5 and I could hardly get in it, the opening is so small and I'm so chunky, weird, tend to only have this issue on sportscars/saloons.

the downside of the incredible torque of an EV combined with being "in gear" was an issue for my mother in law last week.

a lady in the supermarket was in an i3 (so a very low power EV in the grand scheme) was having an argument with her child in the back and seemed she accidentally put her foot on the accelerator.

a person was walking in front of her car who she knocked, thankfully put of the way, but ploughed into my mother in-laws car which was parked which then also shunted her car into another car.

upshot was. from a standing start 3 cars were written off (the 2 cars other than the i3 were bangers so didn't take much).

luckily only injury was a suspected broken wrist of the lady driving the i3 but it does show how punishing the instant very high torque of an EV can cause issues .

maybe I am wrong but I doubt ab equivalent petrol would have been as powerful.

maybe the real LSD / differential on the front end - have you seen what kind of monthly costs these and others will have for your employees ?

.......

think they need to get to the bottom of this fire

the flip side of course...... if any car doing close to 100km/h hit a concrete barrier, there would be a significant chance of fire and fatalities.

damn shame of course but trying to make an "EV dangerous" argument over it seems disingenuous and bad taste imo (not aimed at jpaul specifically but it is what certain people will do) i just hope the women were unconscious or dead on impact!.

my biggest take home from it , and its something i have believed for years after a family drowned in a car a while back just by rolling into the sea on a boat launching slip, is that driving with car doors locked is quite dangerous and whilst cars are meant to auto unlock in an accident, in a catastrophic failure they cannot be relied to do so.

Interesting degradation video from Bjorn on the iPace, 7 year old, 120k miles on it.

TL;DW - about 9.2% but could be as high as 11%, not terrible, not amazing.
