Not sure how I feel about this, on the one hand it's ******* cool they managed to gene sequence Dire Wolves back into existance, on the other hand, the wolves had their time, should we really be playing God and bringing extinct animals back ?

It is more an important milestone in de-extinction rather than actually bringing them back from extinction despite the claims, but despite some significant concerns in my opinion it is an important technology to develop but does need appropriate oversight.

The problem with "They had their time" is that the human race has driven/hunted many species to extinction rather than nature so we have a lot to make up for.

Bringing back animals that did genuinely go extinct rather than get eradicated by our good selves could be viewed as 'playing god' though.

As you can imagine, this is the talk of the town here at the Natural History Museum today. The scientists I've spoken to (who literally do nothing but DNA sequencing all day) have said that this isn't an actual Dire Wolf, but rather a common Grey Wolf that's been genetically modified. This seems to be quite a common consensus too.

That being said, it's still absolutely awesome and I can't wait to see a load of Raptors eating everyone.

I guess, but what's the point in making some de-extinct if the environment that made them extinct in the first place is still there to make them extinct again ? Unless we're going to put them in zoo's/parks for our entertainment but then that's morally questionable
This seems to be quite a common consensus too.
So a literal Dire wolf from Temu

I find this attitude that we’re unnatural really nihilistic.

It’s very strange as well. Most people fall into 2 categories. Creationists or evolutionists. If you’re creationist then you believe humans are ‘special’ and are custodians of the earth. If you’re evolutionist then we are just the same as every other animal/plant/life form on this earth and our presence and behavior is entirely natural.

I suspect most people on this forum aren’t creationists so I find it very odd the number of people who refer to humans as unnatural or a disease or a virus….

Beware the beast Man, for he is the Devil's pawn. Alone among God's primates, he kills for sport or lust or greed. Yea, he will murder his brother to possess his brother's land. Let him not breed in great numbers, for he will make a desert of his home and yours.

Have you ever seen a god bring an animal back from extinction?
