Ford Capri is back...

It is crazy how far Ford have fallen over quite a small period of time. Mid 90's to mid 00's they couldn't make a bad model. Even Bond was driving the Mondeo!
Yep, there is nothing in the range i'd touch now but 20 years ago there were multiple cars accross their range i'd happily take.

In fact as evidenced by my sig I still have one.

An SUV is a woman's car us blokes don't need to like it ;)
Diesel SUVs are great if you live in the sticks - higher ground clearance and better visibility through higher seating position. Being able to fit 4 adults plus luggage or 2 adults plus a dishwasher and being able to tow a tonne of firewood is a must have.

Ford cars seem to look rubbish these days with nothing special
Had this conversation the other week when my Mondeo was on for an airbag recall, they asked me if I wanted to test drive anything while I wait and I said you no longer make a single car that appeals to me. Everything is the same box shape car thing.
No Mondeo, no Focus and no Fiesta. Capri isn't a Capri.
He couldn't answer why they no longer make a saloon shape car, but he said a lot of long term customers have said similar.
Mazda 6 estate would be high on my list right now, but we'll see what's available when my Mk5 Mondeo packs in.

I think if they'd just called it the Capri simply because they were reusing old names, people perhaps wouldn't have had quite the same level of reaction, but Ford deliberately played on people's nostalgia and the "iconic" status of the original throughout their PR and marketing.

"The legend is back"
"inspired by the iconic original"
"The soul of the classic Ford Capri"
"sports car soul in a practical SUV"

Electrifying on YouTube proved the point best when they stuck a Mondeo sticker over the Capri name in their preview. If you took the 5 off a new Renault 5 you'd still have a pretty good idea of what it's trying to be; absolutely nobody would say the same about the new Capri.

Yeah i think that's it, no body was that bothered when they re-used the cougar name as the Kuga or the the puma as they didn't make a massive fuss about it.

Maybe they should have named it the Kapri and just not said anything about the old Capri and im sure it'd have had a far better reception.

They don’t make them because people stopped buying them (saloons) or they make no money (Fiesta).

The Puma is one of the best selling cars in the U.K. for a reason, most people want crossovers in 2025 and they happen to be more profitable because people are willing to pay more for them and they don’t cost proportionally more to make.

8 of the 10 best selling by cars in the U.K. are crossovers. The two exceptions is the Corsa and Golf.

The men’s version for that is called a ford raptor

It funny even the kids over here call an SUV a mummy’s car

Ford was also huge in the 80’s as well with the RS turbo’s xr2/ XR3i cars

Think the ford fiesta & escorts back then was best selling cars in uk

rally and touring car successes helped promote the brand .. if there is going to be an ev evolution (with normal range) of those disciplines,
that might force ev handling&weight to come back into focus, but, maybe the boy-racer became a family man, after marrying Nicole.

Don't forget the twingo in the renault bev stable, maybe it's popularity will increase in UK - happy face, badge design to die for.

It's a shame, they could have made something similar to the Toyota 86, surely that would sell like hot cakes? A lightweight, relatively low cost coupe.

to be fair ... whilst they sound similar Cougar Vs Kuga is more than just a C to a K.

also I don't think ford tried to cash in on the cougar name (didn't really have one) when they marketed the Kuga.

Puma Gen-E is coming imminently. I think it could be popular although has some stiff competition like everything BEV now. I have one on order through company but probably not arriving that soon. It looks just like a Puma, one of (or the?) best selling car in the UK. It has an absolutely cavernous boot, slightly bigger than the ICE Puma which I found to be excellent already assuming you roll without a spare wheel… Makes it very practical.

Will be an interesting update in Ford passenger EV lineup after the Explorer/Capri as I would assume it’s going to be quite different to those.

I still like the Mach-e and despite the Mustang thing the looks (and handling versus some other BEVs) have grown on me.

I'm not so sure, 172 miles WLTP range is a joke for a car that size in 2025. The real world range is going to be in the region of 120-130 miles, its not 2015 any more.

It's is the same price as an ID.3 which is a good car and does 240 WLTP miles on a charge.

Ford's PCP offer on their website is also very expensive - £5k down, £430/month for 26 months and only 6k miles.

You can lease a Ford Capri for 2 years with 10k/year for £3k down and £269/month inc. VAT.

I know which I'd pick out of those two offers... they are going to need to be knocking these out at a significant discount to be competitive.

EDIT:

Leaseloco has an ID.7 Estate for £3.5k down and £293/month for 2 years, 10k miles.
