Hi all,

I'm probably not likely to do this, but my solar system is producing quite the excess of power and I was looking on autotrader and notice there are nearly 1,000 of these for sale on there. Free running about and all that in style (ignore the purchase cost).

The cheapest being a 2021 93.4 with 75k miles on it for £35,558. That seems to be quite the bargain when a new Taycan is from £88k for the base model all the way up to £200k (plus options as always with Porsche). There are 10 of them under £40k.

I'd prefer the Turismo, so cheapest of those is around £40-42k, so not much more but more space

Seems like you get a lot of car here - are they just awful?

Nope they’re brill in my experience. Best EV I’ve driven personally.


However there are a lot of ex-lease, and while the RRP is high, they have historically been sold with large discounts as they haven’t shifted as well as anticipated.


Bit like the ID.7 really. Great car but just didn’t sell.
 
Great cars but there is no second hand market for a lightly used one for two reasons:

Most people that can afford one could probably get one via a company car scheme and the monthly on a brand new one would be less than a used model due to the BIK savings.

To layer on top of that, a business can write the entire cost of the car off their corporation tax bill in year 1 because it’s an EV. You can’t do that with an ICE car.

These two factors alone mean the majority of people in the market for a lightly used Tycan can get one for less than 2-3 year old new one when applying the usual depreciation curves of this sort of car.

That means the used prices have dropped well below the usual amount for a 3 year old car - why would you buy a used one when you can get a new one for the same monthly?
 
I'd also throw caution in and say that fuel is only one aspect of running a car so even if the electricity is free it is far from 'free running about'.

I run an Emira, an RS4 and a C7 A6 3l...so I know the other costs - they're not really a consideration for me.

I will have a think, but I don't really want to get rid of the A6, which is what this would potentially replace...

I'd also not pay monthly for a car, I just buy them outright...
 
I'm looking to get an EV in the near future and have been trying a few out. I borrowed a new Taycan 4S for the day on Saturday and it is by some distance the best EV I have driven, I was really impressed.

Push to pass button is pretty much warp speed, and they do far quicker models than the 4S too. The last EV I drove was the BYD Seal Excellence, similar performance, but the Taycan is on another planet in terms of dynamics, but significantly more expensive of course.

Whether a deal would make sense is another matter (it would be a private purchase, not business), and the spec list is extensive, but it seemed an excellent car.

You can likely get a 2020/21 model from Porsche Approved for sub £50k; these earlier models are notably less efficient, but should still do well over 200 miles on a charge I think.

We entertained a used one, and it is a great car but the issue was (from our end) we didn't have any interest in keeping it for more than 3 years and Porsche simply have terrible residual predictions on them so if you are not buying outright, like you'd be, then they are just bad value used. Looked an an Audi eTron GT as well, but the Porsche was better overall.

Impression was if you have having a dark interior then the panoramic roof is a must, quite like one in the cherry metallic and grey interior.

There were loads and loads sold on lease to business users, so you'll see stacks of them as they were a great tax doge for those who have access to company cars.
 
Servicing is ~£1200 a year, with year 4 being a big one and can be £2000+, assuming you keep it main dealer for the warranty. No idea on insurance as I gave up the idea of getting one not long after looking at maintenance.

I wonder what the insurance and servicing costs are
(and the battery health)

Insurance was less than a Tesla Model 3 (for us) and it was the warranty cost that was high not so much the servicing, we were quote £330 if we bought them upfront. Battery health/deg is low not quite class leading on the 93kWh pack, not sure on the 79kWh.
 
Yep they are an amazing bargain if you want an EV...do your research on why so many for sale so cheaply!

Battery is one of the best....depreciation is savage! As are spare parts & running costs when something goes wrong (aircon or heating failing is a common issue & very expensive to fix). Tyres & brakes are not cheap either.....
 
You know someone who has had brakes done? They force it at 6 years but unless you are racing around a track there's almost no wear on them regardless of PCCB or standard.
LOL there is lots of wear as the car weighs so much & so many drive it maxxed out everywhere at warp speed so leave braking as an afterthought!

Mate at work got one on the company scheme for £135K .....he had carbon + ceramic everything possible when he leased it interest rates were low so he got an amazing deal.....now the brake discs & pads all need replacing after only 2 years.....Porsche will not cover under warranty said its a consumable........there is not much change from £18K but my mate cannot drive the thing without brakes can he & if he hands it back he still has to pay a lot of the lease so is kinda stuck......!

Tyres are not cheap either........I just think anyone getting one of these needs their eyes wide open on running costs really...they are not plug n play with minimal maintenance at all. There are many good reasons why depreciation is so savage.....best EV you can buy still though.

From what I've seen the 2yr/20k mile service is around £400. Seems reasonable enough? Even if it's a bit more, not the end of the world.

Tyres won't be cheap, probably £300-400 - but most of these cars are the same sort of cost with large 20/21" wheels.

Brakes will be expensive I'm sure, but should last a while. Replacement CCB's will cost a fortune on most cars, but they do last a long time. Not sure what's going on with the example above.

If you can charge at home the electricity costs will be very cheap, so running costs should be fairly good I'd say. I understand Porsche warranty isn't too bad either.
