FPS in space marine 2 with a 9070

I have found I have to lean on the resolution in some games as the 5800X is the limiting component. I agree it is mainly from poorly optimised efforts for the games at play but it is also a sign that the balance of hardware has found the weakest component (the cpu). Yes you could get a x3d for another 20% or so on AM4 but for me its the sign that its time to go all in on the AM5 platform.

I suppose it's all to do with the cost. £200 for a 5700x3d.. I haven't looked how much a mobo, ram and cpu on the am 5 platform. But guessing close to £450 for a decent mobo, ryzen 7600 and 6000mhz ram. But then that's close to the performance of a 5700x3d in gaming lvl..
Would love to put £500+ in but that's not an option right now

A b850/32gb of DDR5-6000/7600 are doable for around £350, honestly if I were in your position I'd consider selling your current mobo/cpu/ram and jumping to AM5 unless you really can't be bothered with the faff.

It's a shame the 5700X3D's cost as much now, it wasn't all that long ago that people were picking them up for £130 a pop.

Well it still got to sell my rx6750xt which I'm hoping for £200. So that's already a nice chunk of the budget I suppose.
And yes regret not getting the 5700x3d for £130..
I mean I have a new PSU to install anyways so could do a whole system overhaul

Good as time as any to do a platform update, half the work is cable routing/psu wrangling anyway.

Yep so you can delay the inevitable and drop £200 for a temporary boost, but then your still having to outlay for AM5 eventually (or intel). The £200 for me would be best going toward the AM5 build.

I use downsampling to see if fps improves and balance it out dependant on the game. Its working so far but may not get you out of every situation, so pencil in that upgrade! :)

What have you done..all I was thinking about was a cpu upgrade, now I'm thinking of a whole am5 bundle !!
Shame I don't has access to MM

If you sell your AM4 kit the outlay in cost wont be too much different to grabbing a 5700X3D tbh.

If the 5700X3D was still on the cheap side I'd have went for that all day long, but at £200 I find it steep unless you don't want to deal with a rebuild, which you'll essentially be doing anyway due to the new PSU. I'm saying this as someone that opted for a 5800X3D a couple of years back rather than jumping on AM5 too, but current AM4 pricing really isn't value for money anymore for many.

For reference, you can pick up the 7600 for around £170 at the moment, £80-90 for some decent RAM, £100-150 for an entry level to decent B850. Seems like a no brainer to me, hell I'd go the extra mile and consider a new case too so it feels like a whole new build! :p

Ha.. case is only a year old.. do you work for overclockers by any chance ? A lot of arm twisted going on here !!

Did this last week

B850 £140
Ryzen 7700 from China £150 This varies
Ram 32gb 6000 ddr5 80-120 ish depending on spec

It's not the cheapest platform

Is a non x3d chip even from the newer generation really better than the 5700x3d? I'd go for the x3d cpu and wait a little longer imo. I got a 5700x3d to replace my 3700x and it has been great, games like helldivers are so much smoother. I dont play with fps info on now because I don't notice any dips so it's full gameplay for me now.

It depends on the game, people often look at averages but that's only valid up to a point. If you only play certain things the older gen X3D chip might be better due to the extra L3 cache, but generally the newer gen AM5/7600 will be a touch quicker.

Sims, city builders and X4 games with a lot of potentially CPU heavy turns, MMO's, certain RTS titles will often benefit an older gen X3D chip by a fair margin even vs first gen AM5 as examples, but you do need to take it on a game by game basis.
