100% agree. If the engines are still going to sound like hairdryers, at least make them fast hairdryers.

It is only a matter of time before Formula One morphs into Formula E and becomes a fully electric championship, that will be a sad day for motorsport!
The writing certainly seems to be on the wall of the demise of Formula E..

That will be the day I quit watching F1.
If I wanted to watch milkfloats jockey for position, I could park up near the local Tesla charging station and do if for free.
Glad to have the unpopular opinion, that if it is 'sport' then it'll be nice to see them challenged to innovate again, designing technologies that will benefit more than just the teams via trickle down to other industry.
Or maybe if they want to keep F1 true to it's roots, then just make them used the OG Alfa 158 1.5l type engines from the 1950's, I mean if it was good enough then and no one wants to innovate or change then we can just stick with that, right? At least there would be some reliability challenges and 350HP should be fine, right?

With the cost cap in place and working, I don't see why they can't relax the regulations to allow the designers to innovate again.

Not sure how you go from McLaren leaving to FE's demise? Other teams have left before, and it seems to be growing it's audience at a healthy rate year on year.
It's the combination of 50/50 and dropping the heat recovery element of the MGU that I find odd. It seems very contradictory.
Formula E is struggling to promote itself and increase it's public profile, according to that article. As far as the message of sustainability is concerned it could be said F1
may also be doing a better job and will improve with the new fuels.
We shall see.
But who in here actually looks forwards to watching the Formula E season? I'll put it on if there's no other motor racing I can view, but I certainly will not go out of my way to watch it as the sport doesn't appeal to me whatsoever. I just can't get excited over milk floats going around and around.
At least the cars are faster this year but I think tiny street circuits don’t help the profile in terms of interest. Obviously they can’t do more because of battery limitations but I’m sure that’s in the roadmap.
They probably need to do something with the format to scale to larger tracks and improve the racing component.
It's certainly not claimed as much of a mind share as they'd like or come close to growing into something that can be compared to the big racing series, but that doesn't mean it is on the precipice of demise. It's stuck around for over a decade now, and is growing in audience and thus revenue.
I did for a while, and I actually watched a live race in Berlin once (we picked a load of experience type things for our wedding list, and it was one of those) and really enjoyed it. I stopped watching mostly because there was a rash of nonsense with suspensions and then some very random outcomes plus I find the new shoot-out qualifying super boring, especially compared to the previous format. I guess it says something about it that I gave up on it, I've stuck with F1 through some very dull seasons after all.
I think characterising these cars as "milk floats" is just kind of silly, they zip past plenty fast enough and I quite like the sounds they make. Especially how you can pick up on the sound of the tyres much better without the engine roar drowning it out. To me, I don't really care whether the cars are ICE, electric, or hybrid so long as the races are fun to watch. I think I'd like Formula E a lot more if it stopped being so locked down and let the manufacturers innovate - I guess that's linked to audience growth though, until they bring in enough money, they need to keep costs down.
I didn't coin the phrase milk floats, if you look back, but they do sound like them.
Everyone has their own view, and that is perfectly reasonable, but I was also quoting the article where it is stated FE was struggling to maintain a public profile and, with Mercedes leaving last year now Mclaren, it doesn't appear to have much of a commercial appeal either..

They don't, except in the same way as an F1 car sounds like a 2CV.
Holy poop if the milk float that came up our road sounded like a Formula-E car it would wake up the entire neighbourhood in the morning. I mean you could also say that a F1 cars sound just like a box of farts... if you are doing stupid unrealistic comparisons.
I’ve seen FE live in the flesh and I thought they did sound like milk floats tbh

I don’t think I could get excited about FE over F1 until they can drive on the same tracks (the F1 tracks, that is), at comparable lap times, for the same(ish) number of laps etc. and at similar speeds. Short, winding street tracks that FE uses simply get boring after a while.

When they first introduced the hybrid F1 engine it didn't sound that far off a rotivator. But then I like the sound of the boxer engine in a Citroën anyway, even that can make more interesting noises than any EV.
