EV general discussion

Was going to say it would be the almost worthless “rapid” charging option.

Or it could be that they are pretty darn old now were EOL for ages, and also you can get an adapter for the CHAdeMO to allow it to work with CCS, not that Leafs charge very fast anyhow.

Wow the price has really fallen out on the used Leaf market - essentially brand new 2024 ones with little more than delivery miles at almost half the retail price for new.

EDIT: Looks like the outdated charging support is a big contributor to that.

Yeah, seems a great choice for a second car used just for short local journeys/commuting when charged exclusively at home, but I wouldn't consider one as the only car in the household!

I’ve seen those but they cost £1000 or more and are not approved. So those cheap Leafs have so many drawbacks unless you are going to use it as a 2nd car for a runabout.

It is that time again and i received the dreaded renewal email this year for car insurance.
(For my area at least) hopefully some of the EV insurance scares are over.
Our house and both cars insurance renewal for the 1st time ever I may not have to shop around and threaten to leave.

£470 for i3
£675 for ipace
£346 for house .

house is a little steep but it's a really good policy and combined with the 2 cars and for 2 drivers I don't think we can argue too much. it's £15 cheaper than last year. My wife also had a (no fault) claim 18 months ago as well. As i said it was no fault, but it still adds another worry on esp as it involved 2 written off cars, a written off ambulance and a heavily damaged vehicle as well. (thankfully a minor miracle no injuries however not sure what happened to the guy the ambulance was on call for)

for reference this is with Admiral on a multi car policy. protected NCB, £200 excess on the i3 and £350 on the ipace and a full no claims bonus added. The good thing about the multi car policy (not sure if standard on all policies with multiple vehicles on) but it allows me to earn my NCB on the ipace and my wife earn hers on her i3 so there is no downside.

There's been a big kick off with EV owners and my local supermarket.

Initially the supermarket built 3 chargers, early on in the EV game & quite close to the entrance doors. Since the larger uptake customers constantly complained to the supermarket that they could never get on a charger.

Now that alone, imo, makes it the ev owner's problem not the supermarket but the supermarket has relented and built 12 new chargers & removed the original 3 because they were older, slow chargers.

The EV owners are all kicking off because these brand new, rapid chargers are now on the far side of the car park, furthest from the doors. According to the supermarket it was easier to put them there because it created less disruption during installation and that they're nearer the sub-station (located in the corner of the car park) which simplified the installation and made it cheaper allowing for 12 chargers and not the 10 originally planned.

talk about a 1st world problem. imo its good news the supermarket installed them... and more is better, it is that simple imo. Yes for elderly people it may be an issue i suppose but still it is what it is.
the more important question (imo) how much does it cost to use them?

that said, shame they could not have kept the older ones as well..... and maybe put a sign up suggesting people leave those if possible for elderly and disabled guests, at least if the others are not in use.... however perhaps the grid could not cope or maybe they were getting costly to maintain.

I dare say EV owners "all" kicking off is a bit of an over egging. chances are it is a handful of whiners who would also be the 1st to moan about anything. I would like to think the silent majority either do not even think about it, or like me, will be pleased to see them regardless of if they ever need to use them or not. (yes i admit i am that sad that i always look around for ev charging when ever i am somewhere new even if i do not need them)

Lazy ****ers ffs

Bet it's no more than a 30 second walk anyhow

is that with european/legal/temp-car - yada yada ? do ev's have any up-tick on break-down cover (I'd forgotten to evaluate that in my budgetting)
but, like the house stuff where if you have acccidental damage, the additional toppings add up.

Short-sighted idiots...

Surely further away from the entrance is better as they are less likely to be ICEd by the fatties and self-entitled who can't be bothered to park an extra 10m away?

57 complaints in the first week they were operational, all moaning they were too far from the entrance.

The 3 originals were some of the very first EV chargers and EOL. They were installed in 2011.

The 3 spaces have now been assigned as a pickup/drop off for the local door2door vehicle (disabled bus service), something else that cause a hoohar with taxis as they've ANPR camera'd it to stop taxis from abusing it instead of the taxi drop off 10 metres away.

I love this new store manager, he seems to love upsetting people who think they're entitled to do as they please

There's a path built and it's length it's 136m to the door or if you ignore the path and walk in a straight line across the car park, 91m.

This 57 complaints are probably from the same few morons. If the chargers aren’t free most EV owners would never use them anyway.

I bet the complainers were more than likely using them as their personal parking spots and not actually charging at all. I’ve seen people not even plug their EV in when “parking” in an EV spot.

As EVs become more and more mainstream (and they are) you will get more and more self entitled morons to deal with.

The best one I had recently was a woman pulling up to a petrol pump, in an EV, and blocking up an entire lane of a petrol station as a result. She went inside and spent bloody ages doing her shopping. All the while there was a completely empty parking lot no more than 10m in front of her. We sat there for ages waiting. She had such a dumbass look on her face when I asked her if she was too stupid to understand how petrol stations work.

How these people are alive is beyond me, I'm surprised she hasn't tried eating her charging plug or something.

yes! not sure if it has break down cover as i get that with my bank but sometimes you cant remove some bits and bobs. but if you are in the market for EV insurance you would have to go the rest of the research yourself... i just thought it was nice to see them not taking the .... too much (though i may try to get home insurance down but that is not for this thread)

PS why would an EV have an uptick on breakdown cover? IME i have never once had an AA person be able to fix my car on the side of the road anyway so its always ended up in a tow the garage (best one was a nice lift from Chester all the way to Cambridge, it was so far they changed drivers half way!). my breakdown cover with my bank didnt change when we went to EVs..... just like it doesnt change depending on if i have a 20 year old banger, a modern sensible ice or a stupid (but fantastic) super car.

perhaps it was in protest of the plonkers who think nothing of parking their ICE in an EV bay ;)

(note the smiley am not being serious however it is the same "I'm all right, screw you" logic as people ICEing imo. )

regardless of EV or ICE i do think its a downside of having a mini supermarket in petrol stations. they are actively encouraging people who are buying fuel to buy some extras whilst in there which then ends up taking longer than it should..... i used to use pay at pump and still do on the very odd time i need to use one.

I've always thought that a supermarket is a petrol station is a stupid idea, but ours takes it to a whole new level. They do loads of parcels too, and the guys that work there are slow, like really, really slow. Their parcel sorting arrangement seems to be to chuck it on whatever floor space there is behind the counter, and then rummage around for 10 mins trying to find the parcels. Oh and of course there's no petrol-only lane, so whether you're doing a quick fill up or a monthly shop, you end up in the same queue, meaning that a quick 2 min fill can take 20 mins.
