Out this morning for a medal comp, Came in with a net 63(77).

Best round I've shot for just over 16 months off the whites. Best part about it was I didn't feel I had even played that well with my irons, Driving was immaculate though.

Had a fair few grumbles my way in the clubhouse but I've been grinding all winter long so hopefully it pays off, expect to get chopped after this, aiming for single digits this year.

Snapped my driver mid swing the other day. Knew it would happen eventually, I carry my bag always, don't get on with Trolleys.
Side effect to which I have no solution atm is that club bang always slowly erodes the shafts of my 3 wood and Driver.

Thankfully it happened whilst practicing so I was able to get a new shaft in time for my Matchplay first round tomorrow.

Think I might have to go down the trolley route, played quite a lot in the last couple of weeks and my knee on the side I carry (can't get on with double shoulder straps) was giving me a bit of pain afterwards for a couple of days. Wondering if I should go manual or splash out on a battery powered job.

Glad you got the shaft swapped, did you have noticeable bag wear on it?

1st Club champ qualifiers. Greens are still poor - very slow and long.

Game of 2 halves.... Fighting my swing on front 9.... Really struggling. One double and 3 bogies... Out in 41.

Then back 9 started with 6 straight pars.... Had birdie putts on 10/11/12/13/15 but all around 15/20ft... Didn't make any. Bogied 16 and 17... Par on 18th.

Good round overall when I didn't really have "it" today - 78 gross for nett 70. Good solid 1st round in qualifiers... Best 2 of 3 count.

God yes. Had a huge wear mark down it. I could take a picture of my 3 wood to show, that doesn't get used nearly enough to break.

Absolutely love my new shaft. Played a match play game today with it. Was smashing it 280 down the middle, felt amazingly.

Sadly I lost badly, could not get a nice bounce or a nice lie or any luck. Putted and chipped badly and lost 4 and 3.

Sucked.

Very good. Shot net level (+16 gross) in my monthly medal this morning. Objectively not bad given my recent scores but gifted 4/5 shots to the course.

Decided to be sensible at the 1st and layed up despite hitting a great drive which made it very tempting to go for the green with my second. Pitched on only to have a bizarre three putt, not sure what happened with my first but it didn't start anywhere close to online . Then at the 2nd hit a solid drive, went to hit 5w with my second but discovered afterwards I'd actually pulled out and hit my 7w  That cost me a double double start. Rest of the front nine was solid.

Got a lucky break at the 10th to escape with bogey. Made good pars on 11 & 12 then hit the most atrocious tee shot on the par 3 13th. 30 yards straight left into some thick rough. Took two to get out into the greenside bunker and came away with a triple. Round capped off by a stupid three putt at the last, went to tap in from inside 2ft and failed. Was screaming at myself for not marking and lining up!

Anniversary Cup tomorrow. Hopefully I take the good parts from today and lower stupidity count for the rest.

Predictably didn't play as well today, couldn't putt for toffee! Had a four putt on the 11th and five three putts, admittedly a couple of which were from the fringe, which tells you everything. Net 75 helped by two birdies taking my count for the year to 13 :) Thankfully stiffed the pin for both as there was no way I was holing them otherwise. 7w 172y into wind on the 12th which ran up the green, hit the pin and stopped dead. Then a lovely 5i off the tee on 16 (190y downwind!) leaving me 72 yards which I knocked inside 3ft with a wedge. Made a good up and down par on the 18th as well so at least some positives for my summer eclectic.

Played a quick 9 on Thursday lunchtime, turned into an ad-hoc 2v2 scramble match which we won on the last, happy days, stooopidly hot :p

Then I played the monthly stableford yesterday, which was a big mistake. I'd been out playing poker the evening before and partied a bit too hard, thought I'd be ok but I thought wrong. Easily the worst golf I've played in a long long time. 102 gross. One to forget.

Out for the society game today at Cumberwell Park, was freezin' cold! I think they must've had a comp on as all the pin positions were diabolical, I've played there a bunch now and don't think I recall a time when the pins were so consistently evil. I'm gonna use that as an excuse for my putting, all 45 of them!

In my defence on probably a third of the greens I was a mile away from the hole by choice because of the silly pin placements, but even then my ability to read the green/get the right pace just wasn't there. I feel like I actually putted ok but every time it was the wrong line and the wrong pace, contact/stroke was good though

On the plus side the rest of my game was ok, 94 gross, +23. So given just how bad the putting was I'm not too upset with that, expecially after yesterday, it's way better than not breaking 100!

One of the other guys got a hole in one, with 2 shots, for a 6-point hole!

Wow, never seen a six pointer. Best I've seen was a playing partner make four for five when getting two shots on the par 5 14th (SI 2).

Yeah, never seen a 6 pointer before either!

Done the same for 5 points twice now, birdie on a par 5 with 2 shots, and that's bad enough but 6! :p

Milled face vs insert.
I have an odyssey with an insert face that I like, but I'm am very often short. If I hit a putt harder then my accuracy goes. I am thinking a milled face putter would need less hitting. Is that right. Thanks.

Not sure, I've got 1 putter with an insert (TM Spider GT Rollback) and 2 milled (Wilson Infinity blade and a mallet), if anything I'd say the insert if you hit the middle of the insert is 'hotter', as in the ball seems to pop off the face with speed, which is part of why I don't like it because the difference in pace between a good and a bad hit seemed massive... Plus I don't particularly like mallets :p

The milled face putters are less 'hot' off the face but are, imo, more consistent across the face.

So if anything it might be the opposite that a milled face requires 'more hitting' than an insert...

It's all about what suits you... No right or wrong answer.

Your theory is correct but it all depends on you.

I have milled GSS insert on my Scotty - I love it. Mate hates it as he doesn't like the sound and thinks it feels "dead" to him off the face - he's got Oddessy Jailbird with Ai-ONE insert and loves the softer feel from that.

It's horses for courses.

Got out yesterday afternoon, played a different course to my usual. The club in question, is somewhere me and friends are considering joining in the future has two courses. We played the harder of the two with some very long par fives. My driver was hit and miss that didn’t help. There is a section of the course that has a lot of water, lost 4 balls along that section. Even when I pulled out my hybrid that is usually my club that is long and usually accurate. Well that went in the water as well. Scored 119 in the end, I didn’t mind was a fantastic course and would love to be member there one day in the future. Just need to play the other course next.

Also does anyone else use SwingU app with their phone and watch? It’s been my go to for my distances recently. First time I have had my Apple Watch die 3/4 of the way round a course. Hadn’t used it anymore than usual, did have a poor signal on my phone.

I've tried the jailbird and did like it, the local golf shop has a used scotty x 7 that I can try. I might give it a try

Have you ever been for a putter fitting? It's worth 5-10 shots on the course getting your putter right.

Just back from a week in Portugal, never thought i'd say it, but i think i'm over-golfed! 6 rounds in 7 days was probably a round too many. Played some lovely courses; Millenium, Vale Do Lobo Ocean & Royal, Quinta Do Lago North, San Lorenzo and Monte Rei. Pretty difficult conditions with strong winds most days. Stand out for me were QDL North, San Lorenzo and Monte Rei, with the latter probably being the hardest golf i've ever played with a tough course to begin with combined with wind that strong that you could play a 100yd shot which could be anything from 58* wedge to 4 iron!. Also the most bizarre day ever when we got hit by the power outage, finding your way back to a Villa without any navigation aids is challenging and then to have no power, first time i've been in bed at 9pm on a golf holiday!! :D

How was San Lorenzo? Last time I saw it (probably 6 years ago...), the course was in pretty awful condition, greens looked alright but the fairways were really bad; spotty grass, bald spots, and invasive growth all over the place. The other QDL courses were a lot more what you'd expect from the place.

San Lorenzo was in good condition, greens were true and fairways and tee boxes were in good nick. Most expensive course was Monte Rei, it was good though a lot of the tee boxes were like an upturned saucer. Very strange course in that any non cut area's of the course are a red hazard, so hit it in the deep rough, just apply red hazard rules. Keeps play flowing but feels very strange. We've said next year it would probably be QDL North & South, San Lorenzo, The Old Course and then either QDL Laranjal or Praia D'El Rey.

1st Team match of the season last night away at St Nicholas Golf Club.... We won 3.5/2.5 overall.

I was 4 down after 6 in my game but managed to claw it back to all sqaure after 17th... But then lost to a great par from him on 18th. Made him work for it mind you, as I canned a 20ft putt for bogie to heap the pressure on him but he did well to 2 putt from around 30ft.

Looking like a busy 10 days mind you.

Been asked to play again on Sunday in a local match for the club, then the home game on Thursday.

So looks like

Saturday - Medal
Sunday - Presidents Putter comp (singles match)
Thursday - Home leg of team match
Friday - Club Doubles tie
Saturday - 2nd round club champ qualifiers
Sunday - Ayrshire Doubles match (county comp)

Wife not impressed :cry::cry:
