Vince's Repair Thread - (Console Repairs & Mods)

That's awesome, thanks very much! It was collected today and should arrive with you very soon :)
Perfect if it lands tomorrow it may very well be on the bench tomorrow. The right thing to do (until I understand the implications of the chip id check) would be a like for like. If later down the line we have issues and I've done the required testing etc then we can go for a better chip.

If the check becomes a stumbling block I can probably mod it out but then id have to maintain modified bios files which I'd rather not do. For what it's worth I have an infinion replacement for mine on the way (I say on the way should be there waiting for me when I get home)... same key specs just beefier.

PS3 blew it's 1.8v WiFi reg so the normal ams1117 treatment there.

Is the wifi dying on these common? I have a ps3 slim, last time I used it, it was working fine, but I was on ethernet, wondering if I should check it now.

Also the berry blue dualshock 4 you have in your pile of controllers is nice. Sony dropped the ball on dualsense colours, there are some nice ones, but the dualshock 4 had so many amazing colours like that & sunset orange. I have enough controllers but if Sony did a Sunset orange dualsense to match the dualshock 4 I would add another one to my collection.

Sadly that's the only fake pad in the bunch. I do have a pristine sunset orange though!

Forgot to say WiFi failure on all PS3 slim and super slim is common the vreg goes. Depending on failure mode depends on damage. It it fails open you good, if it fails shut it's bga and new WiFi plus the regulator. My Red super slim took the WiFi with it but all the slims I've done haven't.

Did a members in here some time back... Can't remember who though.. went and looked and it was @TheVoice - I replace the little qfn package with an AMS1117 1.8v, different package but a much more robust regulator.

:(. That's a shame. Are fakes junk and only good for the bin (I assume you can't calibrate fakes) or can you at least use the shell on it and reshell a tatty original? or are the fakes just too different inside?

Thanks, I'll give mine a check then at some point if it's common. It's just been sitting on the side, it was fine last time it was on, but that was ethernet.

Tends to also affect the pads, you would know if it was broken :)

That would be awesome, thanks! As previously discussed, please don't feel any pressure regarding the timescale - I'm really grateful for your help with this :)

I am obviously happy to go with whatever solution you think is best, you're definitely the expert and the like for like does makes sense at this stage.

Got myself an Aya Geek! my lord its a beast! Wont turn on, but a beast none the less. I guess the bits on the sides were screw holes with like rubber covers or something?

It's spi nor is the smaller package chip! The same as the chips I grabbed next day from mouser that didn't fit my device... Handy.

Well handy and not handy as well... I need to program it by soldering wires

Doh cant remember where I put chips... time to hunt

Found em... Same chip baby...

Gotta clean my keyboard man it's rank, full of flux and crap.

So there as a bios update which supposedly fixed some stuff that was released 12/03/25..... be rude not to slap that on it on a new chip really and see what happens

Blimey, you're not wasting any time. Thanks so much for looking at it so quickly!

Yes, it has covers that fill the gaps in the side and conceal the screws which I left out as I was in and out of the case so frequently trying new potential fixes that I'd read about.

It's a result that you already had the chip in, but sorry about the soldering - that looks quite involved!

Just to confirm it's a geek 1s 800p? It's not playing ball yet

Additionally did you update the EC firmware?

Yep, it is 800p.

No, I didn't update the EC firmware.

its having some real trouble... and ive noticed the chips I have are 1 letter out... supposedly pin compatible but I cant make the thing boot. Gonna order in some of the exact model the ones I have are: 25Q256JWPM and the one it has on it... 25Q256JWPQ - They should be compatible but I havent had any signs of life. Im still convinced its the bios...

Ill order in the chips and try again.

edit: next day order from mouser :D happy days.. They should ship tomorrow and be here thurs / fri

I really appreciate your efforts buddy. Fingers crossed they will do the trick...

I cant seem to find the 20kb nor on the board.... a second nor holds the device firmware. Was easy to find on the air on this I cant find it...

Sorry, really can't help with that!

Haha I wasn't expecting it mate.. although we may end up in a position where I need to find it... TBC!!! We will likely know tomorrow when our mouser chips come in :D
