Clair Obscur: Expedition 33

I've no idea how people find the combat in this game dull, enemies and the bosses are so varied and I often find the same combination of actions and spells don't work and you have to change it up, some are even better being gunned down instead of using your action points.

totally agree

GOTY contender for sure - each time I boot up my PC and go to play a game I'm lured straight away to Expedition 33

It's probably people that don't get on with the parry/dodge mechanics primarily, the QTE's you can turn off/automate. The biggest variation in enemies/bosses are with how to avoid/counter their attacks outside of the turn based combat sorta otherwise streamlining you toward certain actions, but that's kinda natural for any TB game I've played to some extent.

For those struggling with said mechanics:

This should be a big help if you're not already aware of it.

Just defeated the second axon (siren). How far am I from the end, any chance I could wrap the story up tomorrow? (not interested in the optional bossfights)

My favourite part of the game by far are cutscenes and dialogue in the camp.

Granted, the combat animations and spectacle is nice to look at, and sometimes I do get surprised by some tricks, like a boss charming my guy and me not having any skill to dispel status effect assigned, thus having to redo the fight...but for me the combat is - from gameplay mechanics standpoint - just too static, since all you ever do is select skill + mash QTEs. I much prefer TB systems of e.g. Jagged Alliance 3 or BG3 where you have also freedom of movement and lot more mechanics to deal with.

I've heard this game is really good.

My mate was raving about it, I did actually buy and download it today but I've not had a chance to play it yet.

Beat the game in like 4 days. 32 hours playtime while doing a lot of optional stuff.

I nearly lost it at the end when you uncover the additional expedition notes that also figured out everything you did but they died on the swim back to Lumiere... heartbreaking

To me this rivals the Persona games (and in some aspects exceeds them). Definitely gets a top 10 on my all time games list. I really hope it wins GOTY.

About 7 hours into this now and really enjoying it. Great feeling when you're down to your last character in a battle, both you and the enemy have 1 hp and you perfectly dodge 3 of his jumps knowing that it's your turn next ... :D

I've not finished it. In fact I've not played it beyond about 4 hours, but the fact is not full of kids means it's better than persona for me already.

The ending actually did elicit emotion and even made me tear up, so I am not completely dead inside just yet!

I still don’t love the gameplay, but the story ended up being great overall, and I am glad I stuck with it and finished it.

Story - 9/10
Gameplay - 5/10

Overall rating - 8/10 (story and characters do a LOT of heavy lifting for me)

Regarding the story, I chose
Verso. As long as the painting existed, Maelle would always want to go back and get lost in it. Renoir goes into some detail about it, speaking how Aline taught him about the dangers of these canvases, only to succumb to it herself. It was obviously addictive and it is much more pleasant to live in fantasy world where everything is great, except it destroys you over time. Kinda like porn and videogames! :D
Of course, if we accept the premise that all the made up people in the canvas worlds are sentient beings, then you invite the uncomfortable questions about just how genocidal it all is…

Think I'll just watch it on youtube ;)

Need a little bit of help, I am currently in the red forest zone with all the Sakapatates, have killed the Super Sakapatate and the little dude said the Chef wants to see me. I can't see where to go though, I've done so many laps of this bloody zone (I really wish there was some sort of map) and can't find anywhere else to go. Just after the 70 flag there is a walkway where I can see a platform down below with a grapple thing on the opposite side but I have no idea how to get there, is there something obvious I am missing or is there actually no way to get there?

As you come into the village straight in front of you is the Chief's House, by the market, has a big sign on it "Chief House" with a big door with a couple of guards.

I don't think I've seen anywhere that resembles a village.
The Gestral Village is here
