EV general discussion

Ahhh yes, I had a jpaul musing moment this afternoon. What's with the green strips on number plates? Seeing less and less of them. We're they ever mandatory? What purpose did they serve? Was it like an "I'm a vegetarian" tattoo or something?

They look horrid on the inside. Never really seen the appeal with Teslas tbh.

Some people like simplicity, minimalism etc. They are quite relaxing from a perspective of not feeling constrained, with lots of open space and the big glass roof etc. I guess people are used to cars that are nothing like it, and people like familiar as well, so they appeal less for some. I don't care either way, I am neither upset of exited by the interior.

( no it's cognitive dissonance i would believe they like the spartan/stoic interior if the inside of their house is furnished the same )

Did all the UK Y's all have the comfort suspension is that a better tesla investment than a 3 with potholes&family-comfort considered.

no , above is a musing for you, tell me if you need an interpretation

My issue the first time I test drove a Tesla in 2020 was the premium price for a very sub quality car. It was worse quality and build than my 2004 Hyundai Coupe and drove a lot worse.

Everyone used to go on about how all legacy car manufacturers had to catch up to Tesla. I disagree, it was Tesla who had to do the catching up.

The Tesla Model 3 is essentially a 7 year old design that has barely changed and has arguably got worse.

It has the heatpump too, and power trunk. Which is why I'm even considering it.
Yes, it has the heat pump, updated interior and black trim, probably the last of the USA built cars to land in the UK.

This isn't always a given there were a small number of cars with black trim and new console but no heat pump.

Then you have to contend with owners of the non-facelift cars wrapping the trim and handles and swapping the centre console and putting on a powered trunk kit themselves (its a direct swap). Always check the spec on the screen, if it says heat pump it is facelift.

No, the early Y's (2022) came with suspension that was firm, IIRC my 73 plate is actually on the 2nd revision of slightly less firm.

They are also considerably more expensive than the cars the poster is looking at, particularly for the performance version. I am sure if they wanted one they would be looking at one considering how different the two cars are and how differently they drive. Not everyone wants an SUV or considers one necessary to be a 'family car' given most of our parents considered a mk2 fiesta to be a 'family car'.

In fairness with all the black shiny plastic and screens no buttons a lot of modern cars are soulless inside. Not loving the new Audi and BMW interiors.

More questions with that guy than answers as ever. Asking about model Y suspension with the statements that always makes the question rhetorical. It’s quite the art.

Audi have really gone downhill since I had a A4 B9, they used to be top of the tree when it came to the quality of the interior, now it is all black plastic. The only manufacturer that could nearly compete with the A4 was the M235i I once owned but even the i4 isn't as bad as the current Audi's are..

The idea was that they would be used to identify your vehicle as an EV for the purpose of free parking and access to congestion schemes and so on. But no-one seems to have actually required them for that which made them completely pointless and so no-one bothers. It was a Grant Schapps initiative, so turned out about as well as could be expected really.

2 Hour test drive in the New Model Y facelift.

Currently got existing Y LR-

New facelift - feels a bit nicer inside - better put together, more solid. Seats seemed more comfy/plush that existing one.
No gear stalk on New Y - but indicator stalk still there - you select D/N/R/P from the screen.... Still found myself insticitively "flick" the missing stalk when reversing
Suspension felt better for sure - however my existing Y was in for a full suspension rebuild at the front end so maybe just poor feeling from my own car.
Lights look nice for sure - Car looks better I think - Grey is the stock colour so less white ones around probably.

0% APR is tempting but my Y is coming up 3 years and just had 4 new tyres on it and due MOT - I'll probably keep it another year at least and see what happens after that.

I think i'm typically happier to tolerate more touch screen functions than most because i'm not constantly changing climate temperatures etc. and so things like that don't bother me but selecting DNRP from the screen? Absolutely not, no thanks :p

to be fair - took me a few times but it''s like a small slider in the top right of the screen...

I'm just so used to the stalk after 3 years - it was a little strange mainly when reverse parking/3 point turning as you are flick up and down on the screen. Like I say it was just 2 hour drive but probably would get used to it.

They did put the indicator stalk back in for the Y as it was removed completely for the Highland 3 refresh.

One of my hates with touch screens is that in the UK the screens are all on driver's left and most of us are right handed.

It just feels awkward using my "wrong" hand - plus with bumpy roads is often really hard to hit the right spot.

I do hope that the trend to get rid of physical buttons stops and reverses. Screens are great for info, but lousy as a UI.

Fine for me as I can use either being ambidextrous. But to fix that issue for the right handers it would be required to have the steering wheel either in the middle of the dash or on the left. Neither would go down well at all..

Agree, nothing can easily be done. Another reason to move to Spain!

Good for the brain to learn to use the other hand. Never really seen it as a problem, was it an issue in manual gearbox cars ??? and pressing the buttons in the centre of RHD cars before?

Not compulsory, the government introduced them with the vague notion that they would/could be used to entitle EVs to access/park in certain places where an ICE car might not be allowed to, or park for free, that kind of thing. I'm not aware of any such schemes being implemented anywhere and they'd be difficult to reliability enforce anyway. I've seen several non-EVs with them for some baffling reason.

This has however just reminded me that I forgot to ask the dealer yesterday not to put green stripe plates on my new car, balls.

I used to see an old Defender round these parts running a green stripe on the numberplate. First time I saw it I assumed it had an EV conversion... then it accelerated up the slip road "rollin' coal" and it became clear it was very much an ironic for the LOLs addition.

After years of having diesels and taking the plunge last year moved to petrol hybrid, totally loved the electric side of it. I’ve taken big step to move to full ev, but gone full hog and ordered Porsche Macan Turbo somewhat of jumping in with both feet fully. Collect it on Friday and truly can’t wait.
