EV general discussion

I've upped my Budget.
Going to look at this tomorrow i think:

Anyone got anything to say about it?
Might not be what you want but just a general comment that I hadn't clocked that Model Ys were so cheap now

Don't think you can really go wrong at £22k

Got a probably daft Q regarding Octopus Intelligent Go. Just thinking about getting an EV so curious about how it works.

Assuming I have a car and charger that support the tarrif, say I get home at 9PM at 35% battery, and my car is set to charge only to 80% in the cars settings, do I just set the schedule in the octopus app to ask for 45% by whatever time? Does the intelligent go app know the cars battery % and will it make sure it gets to 80% regardless of say pre conditioning, efficiency losses etc?

Speaking of pre-condition, if say I have a car as above, that has a schedule for warming the car etc. and it is plugged in, is it smart enough to use the EV charger instead of the battery to warm/defrost the car? Even with IGO controlling the charge schedule?
I switched to a Hypervolt 3 Pro at the weekend, and have it setup to be ready by 7am and to add 70% battery, as soon as I plug in either car they charger requests a slot from IOG and typically that runs until the time I've requested it to be ready so if you aligned that with the preconditioning it'd use the charger for it.

It also takes a day or 2 for the Octopus billing platform to catch up with the schedule they created so your online account will be all over the place whilst it catches up.

I see OVO are pulling all support for the ohme chargers. Charge anytime will no longer work with this charger. I was just about to purchase one too, luckily i saw the news article before I did.
Getting the Hypervolt 3 pro now for when the Cupra Born VZ arrives which being a factory order and getting a 10k discount could be a few months.

I really want a low miles performance. Happy to pay the extra for that

I am enjoying the new (to me) Born. It’s a 2023 V3 77kWh e-boost with the Beats audio and the cargo pack. It is very planted and almost as good as an I-Pace for handling. The 20” alloys are perfectly comfortable but that because despite the rim size, they are not low profiles.

310 miles at 100% SoC so far and that’s with temperature this past week about 8c to 15c and it being a bit wet.

The UI is perfectly adequate as I tend to be the type who sets things once and leaves them. Though the haptic buttons and the window buttons are mildly annoying to live with.

It’s weird I went to the dealership specifically to test a Megane E-Tech Iconic and the Cupra Born was the “sure while I’m here” backup.

Said it many times. Will say it again. It’s the best EV for people who like driving. You still get the benefits of EV too and they can get 5-6m/kwh

Looking forward to my VZ

I test drove an ID.3 a few years ago and it really made me giggle on a B-road. Sounds like the Born is even better to drive?

I still dream of that ID.3’s turning circle every time I drive my Model Y. Sigh.

Yeah they are great. And I have a modified e92 m3 too. Not really a guy coming from a diesel corsa

Yeh, I found the haptic buttons annoying too on my test drive. It's one of the most complained about things on them. You'd think that sort of thing wouldn't have passed through the design and testing phase.

I would have gone for the born, had the 430bhp in the MG4 Xpower not been too tempting to turn down. I'd have most likely gone for the VZ, had they been a bit older or depreciated more. Once id had a tickle of the power and traction from a dual motor, it was hard to enjoy anything slower :p

My perfect car would be a mash up of both. The interior of the born (as it's much nicer than the MG4) but with the steering wheel controls of the mg, the exterior of either (I quite like the look of both) , the adaptive suspension of the Vz and the power train of the MG4 Xpower. All ideally at the price of the Xpower too :p

Haptic controls aren’t an issue after the third drive. It’s like complaining about an iPhone not being a blackberry

The funny thing is it was the owner reviews of the e-tech claiming it was nimble and had great handling for an EV. I just didn’t feel it at all and the front wheel drive fidget and tyre scrabble along with the incredibly light and vague steering just made it feel very “meh” IMHO.

I think the problem was I am coming from an I-Pace and that gives almost any EV a high bar to reach. The e-tech was just not even close for handling, even ignoring the performance aspect.

The Born felt much nicer with the rear wheel drive feel and a bit more precise steering with improved feedback. The agility is as good as the I-Pace but the I-Pace gave excellent steering and driving feedback, though the Born is very good in Cupra mode even without DCC. Certainly much better than the e-tech.

To be honest as an everyday car to live with, the Megane e-tech might be a better choice with physical buttons for climate controls and a better infotainment system. But the Born (and ID.3) are not some unusable mess that some of those typical reviews claim. You know, the ones where they have a car for two hours or even just a day and post a “review”.

born could do with some ozempic too, the french as usual a bit slimmer 1.5t 500kg less - should be able to feel that on the bends I can feel +150 on my newer car.
(that new jack from other thread, had been my first thoughts - marginal)

e: this is why junior velocee with fwd+lsd - like bmw 1 series or ST could be an eye opener
