The 2025 Bum Thread

200k is of debt, approx value 340k
900ppm (1.9% rate)
Fixed until 2027
It's depressing but I'd probably try to struggle though and see what the next couple of years brings. You're not going to do van life forever I assume, so at some point you need somewhere to live again...is renting out your current house to fund van life for a while an option? Disability benefits for your partner not an option if she has to have a WFH job and can't get one?

That rate is amazing - buys you a ton of time to. Seriously would see it out tbh but it's up to you! Maybe look at just any job to cover bills and keep you busy while you are looking for something more perm.

And that may be what we do. At least until 2026 and just scrabble by.

Its not a good house for renting. It's a small house with a large (large for a new build) garden that requires work. If was buying to let would probably want something else.

No. This is the issue. Obviously at some point van life isn't an option. Get old etc.. Or maybe it is? I dunno. But I doubt it.

Like said.. It's going to take a lot of thinking about what to do. If I was on my own I think I'd be gone already.

I dunno what's she'd get. Her issues mean she can't drive. When she's fine she's fine. But when symptoms flare up I'd say she's basically disabled. I have no idea what that would mean in terms disability support. It's not something that can be diagnosed with tests (so far anyway)

Gf had meeting today confirming redundancies will be taking place for sure. But won't find out till end of June.

I'd say stick with the house and both try to find work, lean on each other, better than being jobless on your own believe me.

Cut back on costs as much as possible. I know you're good anyway, but be ruthless. Mortgage payments aren't wasted money at the end of the day you can always sell later if you actually have to.

If your BI area isn't looking good you're gonna have to consider other areas. Maybe product management? I'm happy to look over your CV/linkedin if you want to DM me about that.

Thanks for the offer. May take you up on that.

On positive side i have 3 interviews in next 7 days. 2 would be decent opportunities I would take. One is really just interview practice.

Well, I blew off the interview lead I had, in favour of this startup. I'm basically working for free for this startup at the moment. They are oversubscribed on the first round of funding now but the legals are taking a while. Hopefully the money materialises in next week or two and I can breathe a sigh of relief that I have an income for the next two years.

Been teaching myself python over the last couple of days. Project “analyse my guitar fretboard accuracy from a sound recording” is coming along.
It’s not a hard language but as usual there’s nuances. More AI after.

I’m not sure linkedin has much ROI nowdays. It seems that lighting one’s personal gaslighting posts, consultants arguing AI everything vs AI nothing depending on what they have to sell, and finally the job section is like a ghost town.

Applied this morning for the Head of Cloud at a certain car manufacturer. This afternoon I got an automated generic rejection.

So it seems either it's closed or they don't want someone that has experience building and operating cloud. It smacks of AI..

Application submitted this morning. The mrs invites for an impromptu thai meal for the anniversary- I now need a catnap and a coffee or this afternoon isn’t going to be too productive!

Yep, AI filters. Recruiters use them now.

You need to figure out what key words it's looking for and slip them in to your CV. After I did that I started getting a lot of hits.

Basically, game the **** out of it.

May not be a bum for much longer.
Same

I am actually work full time (well, more than full time, evenings too sometimes), for this startup which doesn't yet have any money in it's account. It's currently scheduled to get the seed funding in the next two weeks, at which point I can finally breathe a sigh of relief knowing I have a salary for a year or two. Probably more job security than I've ever had tbh :P

Quite a tasty salary too, and options ofc.

I'm still a bit bummed out about having to step away from the games industry, but I keep on top of the news, and two more fairly big studios in the UK have laid a significant number of people off in the last week. It's absolute carnage out there.

My plan is for this startup to be the last time I work for someone else, just bank as much moeny as I can then work on getting on of my game prototypes released.

The tech industry is bending everyone over at the moment. 4 people I know got laid off last week from their tech jobs, all at different companies. Some I previously worked at.

I can thankfully say my place is hiring at the moment but we deal in Crypto. That could also crumble at anytime.

Yep 40 going at my place. Some of the PCB designers/engineers have been there over 40 years.

The company was bought out by an American corporation a few years back and are running it in to the ground with poor management. It used to be a very profitable company.

Every year it has been redundancies to save costs, but no plan for what to do next.

Not the first time I have seen or heard of this.

Not the first time I have seen or heard of this.

Not the first time I've experienced it either. American execs/CEOs are largely useless.

They like to make big power moves, but don't seem to know what to do afterwards. The wages of people they got rid of won't even put a dent in the losses they are trying to recover. But they have cleaned out the talent/experience, so meeting production targets will be pretty much impossible. So losses will keep growing.

You can bet, even with big losses the CEO is walking off with millions in bonuses though.
