Plusnet Discussion Thread

Pretty much all modern ISP routers ‘phone home’, or to put it another way, whether you tell them or not, their tech support teams will already know.

A higher level tech might well do
But initial contact with them they just seem to
Follow a flow chart
Do this ,yes,no etc
Even when I tell them to start with that I already
Did all that they still make you do it anyway

I'm torn between switching to Plusnet or Sky from Aquiss.

Plusnet - Full Fibre 900
£37.99 until 31/03/26
£40.99 until 31/03/27
£43.99 onwards
Total cost £965
£110 reward card
£67.50 Quidco cashback

Sky - Gigafast
£35 but price rises unknown (presumably around 5-6% each year?)
Total cost £840 (but does not include rises)
£80 voucher
£90 Quidco cashback

I'm swaying towards Plusnet just because the price rises are known.

Also looked at Onestream but reviews are abysmal.

PN are no better or worse than other ISPs If you’re connection is with OR in my opinion. Best tech support is via their forum where they seem to follow up queries. I was with PN for around 15 years before I moved to BT to get FTTP but two years later I was back with PN after ditching home phone.

Thinking of going full-fibre with PN. Would you take their 'Hub Two' router, or do your own thing?

I already have an Asus RT-AC68U which I've ben using with PN FTC for years, so could use that, but that's 10 years old now and due an upgrade either way.
That router could be a decent little project router if you flash DD-WRT or similar onto it ;) I still run an Asus RT-N66U with DD-WRT installed. It's been great for years. I think I have 5 Plusnet routers just sitting in boxes. They didn't want them returned, and I didn't know what else to do with them :D

Before moving to aquiss I moved around most of the big name suppliers (including PN and sky) using my own modem/router. Each time it was just a case of rebooting modem and reconnected no noticeable difference in any outside of sky requiring a special DHCP setting and vodafone for some reason was absolutely terrible and I ended up cancelling within my cool down period. Never needed to use any ISPs support though.

On PlusNets Full Fibre (fttp) I'm having constant dropouts all of a sudden and I'm not getting any help from support. It's dropping and resetting probably 4 times an hour which takes the whole house offline until it's back up.

What's a compatible router I could grab to confirm if it's the Hub causing issues? I don't mind if it's not the cheapest as if it solves the problem it can just remain in place.

It needs to be easy to use, cause I'm dumb, but also have decent security options cause I'm scawed of Russia.

I get confused if I need two items with one modem only or one combined.

Cheers

You will not need 2 devices, you have a optical network connection fitted by Openreach that connects to your current plusnet router. I'd check the current routers web interface which should show current uptime on the wan just to ensure its not a wireless problem or something else.

Connection time is 50 days +

I have located the logs for this morning if it's helpful, though I'm wary of posting all the IPs and Mac addresses of things.

Fttp the ont replaces the modem
So only need a router
I use huawei ax3 instead of the hub 2
From plusnet
Can pick those up for approx £30
Wifi 6,wpa3,work as access points so could
Also be used for something if turns out
The issue actually is with plusnets end

I use their OR ONT obvs.... But I use my own router. Their supplied router is naff.

And you can connect directly to the ONT to check for line faults.

No need for the logs, 50 days uptime says its reasonablely unlikely to be the wan.

You should have your pppoe connection details from Plusnet which is all you will need to program another router or setup a pppoe dialer direct from your pc when connected to the ONT via ethernet (be aware you will be reliant on device security and not behind a hardwware firewall at this point)

As Mcnumpty suggested the ax3 is decent enough and cheap.

It's also a pretty simple router interface with not
A lot of confusing options

£30 would be price roughly in mm or ebay
Next day delivery from the usual place
Probably cost you £45

And so I'm coming back to PN from BT. Put my order in for the 300 package and got a confirmation then EE made me switch my BT account to EE ID. Now I can't see my bill and they even set up a new direct debit. Hopefully no issues arise.
Going to get a tp link deco x75 2 pack as the BT hub 2 didn't like my house which lead me to falling for the WiFi disc (wireless backhaul). Worked well enough but steam link still does not like it at 1080p. All other devices are fine.

I presume the best time to sign up is as close to the 31st March / 1st April so you don't have long at the higher rates.
Does it go off switch date? So sign up about 10 days before to pick either of those two dates.

I did it on the 19th July and they connected me on the 24th. I could choose a later date but I had to do it earlier.
Ps if you are with BT you will be made to make an EE account to end your BT contract.
