At what point do you say GPU's are too expensive and refuse to buy?

It's interesting to wonder where this is all going. Gamers refusing to pay, but NVIDIA can get that money selling the silicon to AI. Are gamers shooting themselves in the foot? I think if ever there has been a need for intel to catch up, it's surely at it's highest level.
Gamers are paying just fine, Nvidia gaming revenue last quarter was a record high and up a whopping 42% compared to the previous year.

Don't confuse a tiny niche forum full of bitter middle aged dudes(myself included) with the real world.

The vast majority of the gaming cards people actually buy are in laptops and pre-built systems. Most of those latter chips are 60 series dGPUs. The most popular RTX4000 series card on Steam is the laptop RTX4060. Half of dGPU sales apparently in laptops. Some of the most popular games are COD and Fortnite which will run on a range of different dGPUs.

So in reality I doubt most gamers are spending over £500 on cards - most are probably far less than that. The same goes with the importance of path tracing, etc - I expect most people are happy to turn down settings and run their games at 1080p with a few RT settings on.

However, people should also realise just looking at gaming revenue, tells you nothing about where those cards are going. Three Crypto booms showed how mining sales were folded into gaming sales.

China is buying so many gaming cards for AI,the US government has restricted the RTX4090 and RTX5090 for direct sales to China. Chinese companies are buying gaming cards and removing the GPUs to put into specialist AI products:

There are also more restrictions coming into play now,so there has been a rush to buy Nvidia chips.China has gotten around this by shipping via 3rd companies - one of them is Singapore:

28% of Nvidia's revenue is from Singapore alone.

I'm just coming up to my two year badge. "Two years without a fix". Imagine using a two year old GPU! Ten years ago that would have been unthinkable, for me. And the crazy thing is, I have absolutely no plans to buy a new one as yet.
I'll have had my 3090 for 5 years in September. Still no way I'm going to upgrade anytime soon.

The prices are bloody ridiculous!

That's the spirit old boy, you fight the good fight and don't let them convince you to buy that shiny new GPU.

I think a battering over the head by NVIDIA with prices has made me realise that constant replacement (upgrades) of parts in my PC just isn't necessary any more. At the moment, I have more interest in upgrading my monitor than my GPU. Even though monitors are pricey, they are better value than GPU's. At least monitors are making technical strides forward.

Monitors are a bit like TVs for me. They last so long now and cost so much it's worth going big and getting the very best you can.

My ****** 1st gen samsung 4k 55inch tv lasted 12 years. Finally died and I went for an LG G3, knowing its likely going to last a decade

My next monitor purchase will be £500+

Man I wish you luck getting that OLED to last 10 years. 5 years and you'll be pushing it.

I have a 4080, and I was worried when 5090 stock came around that I'd buy one - but honestly haven't even felt the pangs. It's just too much money. I'd feel so ridiculous dropping 4 grand on a videocard. Even if I was a millionaire, I'd feel ridiculous. I'm just picturing cycling through settings I don't even really notice to justify it. Or I compare it to other stuff I could buy, like a snowmobile or really nice e-bike or something and it's... just too much. It's too much. The 4080 was stupid enough, but it was necessary - the 3070 just couldn't power the oculus 2. But the 4080 is enough for AC and iracing to look great on the 3. I'm sure another couple of layers of supersampling would be nice, but...**** nvidia

Hopefully gamers turn their backs on this gen of cards.

Nvidia has released a RTX5060 which in reality is basically just a rebadged RTX5050....a 50 class card for a 60 class price! = SNIDE
They push 8gig vRAM cards knowing full well that it's not enough for modern games = SNIDE
Nvidia's presentation at CES mentioned that a 5070 will have comparable performance to a 4090, lies! = SNIDE

They are just a snide company and the fanboi's "Nvidia can do no wrong" antics just make them think they can get away with anything as the mugs will always come back to buy their cards.

...AMD sadly heading down the same route for marketing bovine excrement statements.

It's basically a s*** show and customers are the losers.

'dosing' performance increase, crippling graphics with narrow bus and limiting vram makes people upgrading earlier and make the cards less attractive on a used market...and that's exactly what they want. Spend and spend again next year. Planned obsolescence, nothing more. The beauty of corporate greed.

That was absolutely hilarious, like do they really think everyone was born yesterday?
Sadly some know no better and lapped it up like a thirsty cat at a bowl of milk.
Shame.

I do buy the latest halo cards (certainly not a fan boi) and the resale isn’t too bad so kinda minimises the cost to upgrade, £580 to go 4090-5090 after 33 months doesn’t seem too bad.
And sadly they can get away with it, if one wants the absolute best then there’s little choice but to lube up and take it like a man.

I'm over the 7 year badge with my 1080ti (bought March 2028 from the Overclockers motors meeting) still using it just fine (with a triple monitor setup) no plans to change, at least not for new, a used 3080/3080ti is on the cards though eventually.
