Went out for another round today, yesterday I shot 47 in a comp with a full set of clubs whilst today I took out 5 clubs (putter, 5 wood, 54-degree, Dynapower PW and the Mizuno Pro 241 7 Iron again) and shot a 40. Probably more down to just not caring/having a laugh rather than having a card in my hand but still it's such a silly game :p

Hit the blade well though... Those Takomo's are still calling me

I put my old putter back in my bag for a round this morning and I seemed to putt so much better. I believe it has nothing to do with the style or weight of the putter just a confidence looking down and seeing something different. 1 3 putt for the entire round which is about 17 less than recently it seems :D
I did similar recently, went back to a blade from a mallet, and been putting pretty solidly... Like you say though it's just 'different' rather than 'better' I think...

Back out today - been a rough couple of weeks since I last played - Lots of family stuff going on and Mother in law in hospital very unwell so not been golfing at all.

Considering no practice or even swinging of a club - happy to shoot 78 gross today. (71 net) - 2 more birdies (now at 32 for the year) but a triple bogie on 9 killed a good round. Just silly error after silly error on that hole.

Had the greatest round of my life today. Fairways were running hard and fast, greens had been watered and were receptive.. My mistakes got lucky and my putts went in. Hit my irons flush, driver OK and shot a 71, net 59.. Was even par on the 16th.

Gona smash my handicap to pieces and the people in the comp today will be very unhappy with my luck.

Just managed to scrape under 90 today for the first time in a while, helped by a chip in birdie on seventeen :D Unfortunately my front nine was dreadful. Only 14pts (50 gross), not helped by puting my opening drive OB . Did drive one close to 300y on the fifth, downwind and extremely firm fairway :p. Course is really starting to look burnt out.

Back nine came to my rescue! Could have been better were it not for leaving a couple of putts short that were bang on line. As it was 23pts (39 gross), four bogies/four pars/one birdie. The 16.2 differential should see my index back under 18 come tomorrow when I have the next round of the summer knockout. Will be giving away 6 shots so can't afford this mornings slow start.

Birdie count up to 19 for the year.

Edit: doing myself short, just looked back on 18 Birdies and actually at 21 for the year (22 if I include the one during my on course lesson the other week).

You weren't already lynched back at the clubhouse? Great round :)
New club, joined in May so I'm not well enough known. Only one person asked how I got on and then I scarpered, no one likes a gloater.

// ended up winning by 4 shots, bet the guy who shot a nett 63 (6 under) couldn't believe his luck.

You'll be well known now..... I would take a few days away from the club if I was you....

net 63 is bad enough but to loose by 4 - I'd be livid

Brutal on the handicap. I got an exceptional round reduction and it took 1.00 off every single of my scoring rounds. So I've gone down from 13.2 to 10.7

I now have to play off the white at 9. Ouch

Victory :D

Into the quarter finals of the summer seven day knockout after an excellent 2&1 win over a guy I was giving six shots to (18 vs 24 course handicap). Thankfully I picked up where I left off yesterday and played my best golf in ages, needed to as well as my opponent got off to an electric start (net 4 under through three!).

1st: Played it safe with an iron off the tee looking to make no worse than bogey. Opponent bombs a drive down the left, thought it may have gone OB but it stays in. They knock their second inside 6ft and make par. I'd made bogey as planned, 1DN.

2nd: Longest par 4, SI 5. Opponent on in two, makes comfortable 4 net 3. I'm stranded making 5, 2DN.

3rd hole halved in pars. 4th par 3, opponent leaks their tee shot right of green. I hit a nice 5i to the middle and get one back with a par, 1DN.

5th hole: Stroke index 1, long par 5 lined with water both sides. I get a good drive away and opponent pulls one left onto the 17th of the other course. I play the rest of the hole without error to win, back to AS.

6th I win with par after making a great up and down from 40ft or so. 7th I'm giving away a shot, decide to play safe with an iron off the tee and play it as a three shoter like the first, which I do. Opponent hits a great drive but then puts his second left of the green in the long stuff. To my amazement he finds it and gets on the green close to the hole for 4 net 3. I hole a lovely put up the slope from around 12ft for par, hole halved. I then win the 8th and 9th thanks to some wayward shots from my opponent. 3 up at the turn.

10th halved in pars. 11th lost after I can't find my second shot to green in time. Of course I find it just after 3 minutes while my opponent finishes off. Wouldn't have mattered as they'd made 4 net 3. 12th halved with a little scruffy play from both of us. Par 3 13th I win with bogey after opponent puts their tee shot in the drink. I'd found the greenside bunker. 14th giving away a shot and I lose after a poor tee shot sees me having to chip out onto the fairway. 15th I win in a mirror of the 13th hole.

At this point I'm three up with three to play. Comfortable you'd think but giving away a shot on 17, the scene of many a blow up in the past, and with the tricky 18th to come I wasn't about to get complacent.

16: A short par 4 playing into wind which had really got up throughout the round. I hit a solid 5i to the fat part of the fairway. Opponent pulls driver! Hits a good one leaving a wedge in. I hit a 3/4 8i to the middle of the green, couldn't have hit it better to put the pressure on. Opponent hits a worldy to 5ft. I hit good putt to secure par, opponent knocks theirs in for birdie. Back to 2 up, two to play.

17: another short par four which plays parallel to the 16th. OB right and water left. Stunned to see my opponent pull driver given they were getting a shot. Sends it straight down the middle lake separating the two holes. Neither of us see it down. I knock a nervy 6i into the middle of the fairway. Opponent plays a provisional from in front of the lake where their tee shot crossed, thought they'd put this one wet but turns out it ended up left of the green just short of trouble. I knock a PW to the front of the green, middle flag. No sign of my opponents first ball and in the confusion of working out how many they were there for nett I thought I had three putts for the win. Luckily I hit a great first put up the slope to tap in range as we then worked out that they were in place for 3 nett 2, which meant they had a chance to chip in and take it up the last. They hit a great chip which was right on line but thankfully it grabbed in the fringe and came up short!

2 & 1 victory secured. I was nottionally 4 under nett at that point to give you an idea of how well I'd played :)

Got out this afternoon, the wind played a massive role today. My driver was working really today, what made a change. One really bad hole when I put it in the river twice, overall was fairly happy with with it.

Decent weekend, played 16 holes of the Saturday comp in 73 shots, ruined the card with the other 2 holes being an 8 and a 9. Played well though so happy overall even though 80 turned into 90.

Also won my club singles matchplay 3&2 so into the last 8.

Had a lesson a couple of weeks ago and since then I've scored better in each competitive round since. Main thing from the lesson was my hands were too far away from my body at address, since changing that I am much more consistent with my ball striking and my balance in the follow through is much improved. Felt really strange at first but feels natural now.

From feeling miserable about the game I'm now in a much better frame of mind.

Playing for our club in a local comp - It's basically a mini team match consisting of 2 singles ties and 1 doubles tie - 1 point for each game.

I'm in a single tie - giving 11 shots away against an 18 handicapper. Weather was pretty awful all day - pouring with rain and strong winds.

1st Par 5 - he has a 5 net 4 - net birdie - I par it - 1 down
2nd - Par 4 - I'm on the green in 2 about 20ft away..... He's over the back of the green in 2 - then chips in for net eagle 3 net 2 - 2 down I don't even get a putt....
3rd - Short par 4 - he drives the green with 3w from 270 yards.... I par the hole, he sinks a gross birdie putt.... 3 down

So to be clear he's net 4 under through the first 3 holes....

Par 3 4th hole - another par from him - 4 down.

At this point it was borderline unplayable - driving rain, puddles appearing on the course, the doubles game behind us were suggesting calling it a day and rescheduling. Obviously the guy I'm playing is having none of that cause he's 4 up.

Anyway - played on.....

I lose 6th to be 5 down.....

Par 3 7th is 160 playing about 190 into the wind - I hit 5 iron to 20ft.... Great golf shot... He hits hybrid to 40ft.... You know what's coming... Holes from 40ft for a 2....I miss from 20ft so 6 down....

I think I was 5 over scratch in horrendous conditions at this point but 6 down.... He starts to then tell me how he's only played 2 medal rounds this year but loads of matchplay/ team matches.... Sounds well dodgy....

Anyway - I finally win a couple of holes to stop the rot.... But he goes on to win 5&4....

Checked his SGU record later on - right enough - handicap shows as 16.5 playing 18 on the course - be he only has 2 rounds this year, and going back into last year - only 8 rounds since July last year.... Very very suspect.

He had a couple of shanks in there during the round but there was no WAY he was 18 handicapper.... Hitting 3w like 260/270 off the tee, past my driver at times.

I know it sounds like sour grapes, but just dislike stuff like that - teams putting players out that they know are a little "iffy" in terms of handicap etc.

Don't like this kind of stuff either, sounds like he's playing a lot but never playing strokeplay comps - apart from most likely the qualifying rounds for match plays so he gets better but his handicap is never so he has a huge advantage in matchplay comps.

This was always possible even under the old handicapping system although I can't remember how many scores you had to submit every year to keep your handicap, maybe it was 3.

Personally, I'd rather play every Saturday and get a score in as opposed to not playing every Saturday, yeah you can go out for a bounce game but playing in comps is good.

^^ That does sound a bit "off" like you say but always tough when you've got someone who can hit it long but not always straight. Got a couple of guys at our club who are unbeatable if you catch them on a good day but have higher indexes then me, but both play in most of the comps and have no shortage of cards submitted.

^ I look forward to the video, assuming one was being shot. I do quite like him but he's a frustrating watch at times with his mental fragility and I think his putting has regressed since he signed with Titleist and had to ditch his LAB.

I doubt there will be a video as R&A previously said no to filming it a few years ago.

Probably a video with some cameraphone footage/chat from him I suspect.
