What retro things have you done today?

Delivery from Japan, no delivery charge and suspiciously cheap so I was wondering if anything would arrive at all.

It’s in great condition barely a scuff on the box and all leaflets and plastic bags still within.

I loved Virtua Cop back in the day. That kit looks like its in fantastic condition!

Haha I know why it was cheaper than I expected, House of the Dead is a limited demo not the full game.

However it’s fine as the condition of everything is near mint and it was only super cheap.

10 - 12 hours of direct sunlight with occasional rotation.

Blimey!

I have an Amiga 1200 and original mouse with some yellowing on them.

This has tempted me to leave them sitting in my conservatory over the next few weeks (if the sunshine comes back again) :D

Do they need to be outside or would a conservatory work?

I think they need to be outside but I'm not certain.

For a short period of time I really wanted a Sega Saturn pretty much just for Virtua Cop...made the whole argument that it would actually save money in the long run instead of spending it all at the arcades...it didn't fly :p

It was Daytona USA for me. I loved that game. The Saturn was the first console I actually did a mod on. I installed a Region Selector Switch and a 50/60hz switch. I would have been a teenager at the time, so I got my mates Dad to help me solder as he was an electrition. It was a right janky install but the mod actually worked!

I've never seen that set before, that's an amazing score! :)

A school mate of mine was lucky enough to have a Japanese Saturn at near launch, we spent hours playing Virtua Fighter, Street Fighter Zero and Virtua Cop. I was useless with the gun at the time so stuck to the controller lol :)

A couple of weeks ago I came across Vince's Repair Thread on here and was inspired by it.

Being a bit of a hoarder, I don't like throwing stuff away because I always think one day it or something in it may be useful.

So here's my Nintendo DS Lite with yellowing screens and pixel damager on the top screen near the logo.

I got in touch with a guy on eBay who sells used parts, I had a replacement charger off him last year so knew he was legit, he suggested that if the yellowing wasn't bothering me I could just buy a second hand bottom screen with yellowing so that it would match mine and a cable that converts the top bottom screen to a top screen.

So for £4.50 including free P&P he sent me this kit and a link to some instructions.

I stripped it down, used a set of carburettor cleaning brushes to clean all the holes and a toothbrush (new of course) to clean all the buttons and housing.

Half time.

Then I had to unsolder the speakers from the old screen, solder them onto the adaptor cable, then remove the metal frame from the old top screen and fit it on to the second hand bottom screen, then use a scalpel to remove a little bit of plastic next to the speaker, it was fiddly job especially as the adaptor cable required folding but I got there in the end.

All done.

Both screens now have slight yellowing around the edges but at least they don't look odd, plus with it being my first attempt I was reluctant to buy 2 new screens in case I messed it up.

Spent about an hour playing Asphalt GT to test it.

I know these consoles can be bought in working order for £10 / £15 / £20 depending on condition but I enjoyed giving it a new lease of life

So i've popped in the memory chips from the donor s3 trio card into the sockets on my motherboard and they are detected perfectly so I have a whopping 2mb of video memory, I didn't realise this would also unlock 32bit colour which is a nice bonus.
I do have a slight issue though which I hope is just driver related. Within a few minutes in windows I'm now getting some screen corruption, kind of a pixel crawling thing. everything seems fine when the system is in DOS or running a DOS title but it's not happy in Windows 98.
Does anyone have any ideas what the issue could be?

I'll take some photos of the display when I next boot up the system. :)

Need pictures, but my first thought unfortunately would be dodgy memory chips.

DOS is unlikely to be using anywhere as much video memory. There are a few games out there with 16-bit color FMVs and similar, but mostly it'll be 256 colors and clever tricks.

Yeah that did cross my mind, i'll get pics at the weekend when I get chance

Well it's definitely the memory chips which is a shame as I put them back in the donor card and used that and it has the same issue. I'm just going to use it without for now, doesn't make much difference any way :)

Latest arrivals:

At the time of release I was really looking forward to Last Bronx as the latest Saturn game, then sold everything and bought an N64 instead so never played it.

I got this bundle for £50, I already have Virtua Cop 1 and 2 and Fighters Megamix so will sell those off individually and D, to get back as much of my investment back as possible.

I mainly wanted Panzer Dragoon Zwei and House of the Dead after realising the copy in my Virtua Cop bundle was a demo.

Got hold of a SNES Classic Mini, from the pictures it's in virtually pristine condition which I'm super happy about (supposedly used once then put back in box and used as a display), as it also means the controlelrs likely won't be too worn.

I LOVE my original SNES (and I have a pretty great collection) but it's in storage with the family, and the Classic is a lot easier to get optimal picture out of a modern TV, plus 60Hz games vs the compromised 50Hz we used to get.
I also used to have a SNES that had a 50/60Hz switch mod, but unfortunately that one died.

Either way I'm really excited as some of my favourite all time games are on the console, the ones officially included are an excellent selection; and it's very easy to add other games to the machine.

Vince in the console thread might be able to help with that faulty SNES if you were interested in getting in running.

Ooh dont tempt me, it would depend on if I still have it. I dont remember throwing it away, but...I might have to consider that next time I get the collection out of storage.
It was absolutely amazing being able to throw 50Hz games into it, boot them, and then switch them to 60Hz.

I also had one of the working adaptor cartridges that also supported SuperFX etc so was able to play all region games with no issues. Do love my SNES collection!

In a way I'm glad that the SNES Classic Mini DIDN'T come with ALL the classics out the box, or they'd be even more expensive to get hold of - still kicking myself for not grabbing one new, especially as I saw a bunch of them in person and a demo unit in one of the tech stores at Schipol Airport in the Netherlands (for the equivalent of around £50) when I was passing through for work a few years back; I should have just grabbed one then, as I dont think they came with a power brick anyway; but I'll definately be adding at least Chronotrigger to mine. It's stupid, at the time I figured I'd just grab one later, then everything happened that happened and stuff like that just dissappeared across the board new and I'd given up getting one for a reasonable price (people are trying to flog sealed units on Amazon for £250 nowadays...). I paid slightly more than the £60 they were new, but for essentially mint, and only used once, happy with that.

Honestly; by my understanding, Nintendo actually cared a lot about the emulation quality on this little box, and actually did a great job getting to to feel 'right'; so that and the HDMI connection for ease of use on modern display, as well authentic SNES style controllers makes it kinda priceless to me.

I will definately be connecting it to my PC though and uploading a few more classics to the machine though, I have the carts so I'm not particularly doing anything illegal as I already have the original/license; but it'll be nice not to have to wear the physical cartridges out anymore (except to boot them up NOW AND THEN to ensure the save charges dont go flat etc).

I found a mystery game called Humphrey in the car boot yesterday, from Spectravideo and Mr Micro and it appears to be for the MSX. It's got no instructions with it, but does have bload "?", R to load on the tape itself, which points to MSX. On all the MSX games lists that I seem to find, it's not on the list, but did appear to be released for C64 / BBC Micro. Anyone any good with MSX games, does that sound right? :-)
